  • Luteal Phase Defect and want to start trying for a baby?

    Hi all,

Hope someone can help me. I've had problems with my periods for years and by using ovulation test kits, I've worked out I have a short luteal phase. Blood tests have shown my progesterone levels are low.

I have thinning hair, no energy, low libido, severe PMS, heavy periods lasting 6 days and a shorter than average cycle (usually between 24 & 27 days). I also have spotting throughout the month, sometimes all the way up until my period begins properly.

There's nothing sinister causing all the bleeding. I've had smear tests, blood work, STI tests, pelvic exams, two scans and a hysteroscopy. Everything looked fine. The only thing that's ever shown up was low progesterone.

In an attempt to correct the bleeding problem I've tried the pill (gave me a normal cycle but had to stop taking it as I ended up having bad headaches), Tranexamic Acid, Mefenamic Acid, Norethisterone (this didn't agree with me at all), the Mirena coil and the Implanon - both of them made me bleed every single day, and I persevered with them for over a year. Not to mention I've spent hundreds of pounds on alternative therapies of various types.

I'm at my wit's end with all this, it's been going on since I was 15 and I'm nearly 33 now. The doctor says he can't help me - all he has to offer is the pill, but I've reached a stage in my life where I desperately want to try for a baby. Being on a hormonal contraceptive is the last thing I want!

I know if I want to start TTC, my luteal phase will need to be longer. I am currently taking vitamin B complex and Agnus Castus. I read online that plenty of women have used Cyclogest progesterone pessaries to lengthen their luteal phases and it helps with PMS and spotting too. My doctor will not prescribe it though, as he says it won't help me. It's so frustrating! As far as I'm concerned it's well worth a try as I've run out of other options.

So, can anyone recommend a website for buying Cyclogest, or offer any other advice?

    Thanks,

    Jacqui
