The question of how people define themselves is a longstanding and vital issue in every human society. There are a number of factors that influence identity in different ways. This paper will explore the sources of personal identity, and how these factors are both external and intrinsic, using a number of essays from notable authors as evidence.

One important component of identity is race. It may seem like this is one facet of identity that is the same for everyone who inherits a particular classification; however, there are two essential aspects to this component of identity. First, there is the undeniable label of the race to which a person belongs. But there is also the manner in which a person interprets and reacts to this classification. In How It Feels to be Colored Me, Zora Neale Hurston writes that “There is no great sorrow dammed up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes… I have seen that the world is to the strong, regardless of a little pigmentation more or less” (224). This quote illustrates that even as a member of a group who is discriminated against or at a disadvantage, individual strength and determination make it possible to overcome these obstacles and succeed in life.

Another important part of a person’s identity is profession. This is becoming increasingly true in the western world during the modern age. As technology allows for greater communication and mobility, a person’s physical community becomes less important, as they can contact family members or friends who live on the opposite side of the planet. This means they are no longer restricted to the people who live in their immediate area not only for employment, but also for company, education, or friendship. Ellen Goodman’s essay A Working Community is a good demonstration of this point. Goodman writes “more and more of us are identified by work these days, rather than by street,” and “many of us have transferred a chunk of our friendships, a major portion of our everyday social lives, from home to office” (222). Goodman seems uncertain of whether this is a positive or negative change, or what its implications are. She writes “I do feel uncomfortable with our shifting identity. The balance has tipped and we seem increasingly dependent on our work for our sense of self” (222).

Running windows 7 32-bit. I run connectify, ad-hoc WEP mode, share my WAN miniport PPPOE connection. Other computers can connect to my ad-hoc network. BUT they can only access certain options, and the capability is extremely limited. Google and youtube can be accessed and are very fast, but any other sites, including youtube videos, gets stuck loading and then fail. Apps like skype seem to work fine. Connected with different computers, all had same problem. Also, tried creating a network through my realtek wireless LAN utility and an alfa awus036h-same problem. If you can't answer, at least point me to a good forum or place where I might find a better answer.

I want to connect a rooted nook color to the internet, but the signal is too weak. My computer gets the signal. How can I connect to the internet? Sort of like a reverse tether.

For my American devices in Ukraine. I know my computer just needs an adaptor, but will things like my ipod wall charger get fried? It says input 220-110, does that mean I just need to adapt? Thanks!

I have firmware 4.3u. Can play burned discs. Want to play isos off my usb. Downloaded wbfs manager, it sees the ISOs on my computer. One loader (neogamma) sees what ISO it is, but screen stays black when I try to load. What could be wrong?

I tried to expand a rar file repeatedly. It didn't work, but I think it may have designated disk space to it, or created half finished files. But I'd also like to see in general. A list of programs by size would be great.
