At a university, is it part of the academic code to assign a textbook? Or is it acceptable practice to not assign a textbook or any kind of reading material?

A bacteria culture initially contains 100 cells and grows at a rate proportional to its size. After an hour the population has increased to 420.

The answer in the book says 10,632 bacteria per hour.

The expression for the number of bacteria per hour is 100e^(1.43508)t

Could anyone explain what is exactly meant by the rate of growth after 3 hours? What am I solving for? k, or P(t)? My teacher said something about e^f(x) times f prime(x) but I am lost...
