Is there an internet forum for civil, informed, and respectful debating on a variety of general issues?
I enjoy discussing politics, philosophy, and science. But on the internet, it's very difficult to find a forum that enforces civility or maintains any level of respectfulness. Does anyone know where I could find an internet forum for debate and discussion that also values logic, truth, and mutual respect?
2 AnswersCivic Participation9 years agoHow can I work on being less socially awkward here on my study abroad (in Japan)?
I'm 21, and a college student in Japan for a year. I go to a rather large school, population-wise, but it's also very compact. I've met a lot of people here and have had great conversations (my Japanese is pretty decent after being here 3 years) but when I walk around the school, I always feel incredible insecure. Like I said, I've met a LOT of people, and they always remember me (name/face/info)...but I am terrible with faces and names, so I often don't recognize people.
This has lead me into the habit of not looking at people as I pass them, because if I make eye contact and don't recognize them, they might think I'm ignoring them. Doing this, however, has left me seemingly socially inept as I walk around, and I'm too nervous to even look at people now as a habit, not even for the original reason.
Tips or any advice would be greatly appreciated??
1 AnswerEtiquette1 decade agoTips on improving my morning workout?
Hey everyone. For the last two weeks I've tried to start exercising. I'm in college and the last time I did intensive workouts was back in highschool.
Every morning, I wake up pretty early and walk down 10 flights of stairs from my apartment, then stretch out my legs a bit downstairs. After that, I jog for a few minutes, then walk (semi-briskly), then jog whenever I feel up to it. I'm still building back to being able to jog continuously for 30 minutes. I do this 2 days, then take a day off, then do 2 days, and take a day off, and so on.
Does anyone have some tips on how I can maximize weight loss (I'm 20, 5'11, and 155 but still have some extra fat from when I lost a lot of weight in highschool. Went from 230 to 160!) within this sort of limit?
Extra notes: I'm dieting, but not working out at a gym. Currently, I can't afford to go to one, and always had trouble making it a regular part of my routine. Jogging, though, has always been simple to keep up.
Extra question: Anyone recommend ways to improve the time I can be jogging, too?
2 AnswersDiet & Fitness1 decade agoWhat's the deal with an American getting tourist visas in Japan?
I am living for 3 months in Japan from September until this November, but want to stay for another 3 months. Last year (August) I was here briefly as a tourist visa but changed my visa to a student visa for a nearby study abroad program. Now I am back and have another study abroad starting later.
Is it possible for me to leave and come back and get a new tourist visa in December?
3 AnswersJapan1 decade agoI know these feelings are wrong, but how do I stop them?
I've been dating a girl for about four years, and while I'm still young (early 20s) and probably stupid for saying this, I feel like I'm in love with her. But, she's the only girl I've ever had sex with, while she has had sex with 2 other guys before we met. Recently I have the strong desire to have sex with other girls but would never want to jeopardize my relationship so I have NEVER acted on these feelings. I doubt any girl would believe me because I know how douchey this sounds, but I really just want to try sex with another person before I can commit to a more permanent relationship.
I know these feelings are wrong, so how I make them stop?
Additional info: I'm hardly a player but I've been solicited for sex twice by girls that apparently liked me and have always turned it down because of how much I care about my gf. I know I sound like a prick but I can't control my feelings, only my actions. So how do I make the feelings go away too?
10 AnswersSingles & Dating1 decade agoWhat should I do about my girlfriend and our sex life?
I've been dating this girl for nearly 15 months now. Recently, she told me that she really doesn't like doing anything physical. I knew she sometimes wasn't in the mood, but this was a bit of a blow. I'm 19 and she's 22, and I feel like I'm way too young to be in a relationship with no real physical aspect. But I (and I say this knowing that I'm young, and stupid, etc.) love her so I don't want to break up or start gaining an interest in other girls.
I understand the need to respect what she wants, and that's what I'm trying to do. But what am I supposed to do?
6 AnswersSingles & Dating1 decade agoWhere can I meet other students in (Nagoya) Japan?
I'm living in a foreigner-dorm right now and have little chance at meeting up with Japanese people at my school. I'd really like to go out and meet people in the 18-25 range but I don't know how. I feel too embarrassed to just start a conversation, usually, even though I can speak pretty good Japanese. Does anyone know a good way, or place in Nagoya, to meet Japanese?
1 AnswerOther - Destinations1 decade agoSome questions about time control for any physics-majors.?
Let's say I could slow time down to .1% of usual "speed". However, I myself was unaffected by this time slow, and am only affected as if time was moving at 100% normal speed. If I was to lightly flick someone, what would happen? Would it be like hitting a wall going 150mph for them, or would it not have any affect at all?
1 AnswerPhysics1 decade agoSpouse and parents fight like cats and dogs, me in the middle?
I'm a houseguest in my girlfriend's house, who lives with her parents. We are both 22 and her parents suggested the arrangement. The reason I'm here is less important than my problem: My girlfriend and her parents fight constantly. Mostly her and the mom. They scream at each other for pointless things and seem utterly incapable of having decent conversations. The girlfriend refuses to move out yet so she can save. I would move out but one of the reasons I stay here is because our schedules are conflicting, meaning lunch and weekends are the only time we see each other. If I wasn't here, it would just be lunches, and I don't want that.
Is moving out into an apartment the only option?

I am making a blog about living in Japan, and need some suggestions. My first name is Will so my initial idea was "Will I, Japan?" but I'd like some suggestions.
3 AnswersJapan1 decade agoHow to reconcile with the Japanese mother?
I've been staying with my Japanese girlfriend in her parents' house for a few weeks and I'm allowed to stay until September. But today the mother walked in on us in bed together (sleeping, not doing anything) and when the girlfriend left the house later, the mother came and freaked out at me. She doesn't speak English but I know enough Japanese to understand what she was saying. Now I'm thinking about moving out but I don't know what I should do...the girlfriend is no help because she doesn't think there's any problem. Help?
