  • Awful experience at PC world?

I have had the most awful time at PC world and need advice.

I bought a new laptop in April (an Advent Monza N2? blue) for £400 (thereabouts). I managed to crack the screen with my palm somehow and understood that my repair would probably not be covered by my guarantee. Needless to say, it wasn't.

Sunday: Took the laptop to the store and paid £50 that the staff member kept referring to as a "deposit". The guy also told me that the soonest it could be sent off for repair was Wednesday. I was told the laptop was going off for diagnostics (which was mandatory for fixture, though I knew the issue and the solution and told them so). [I later realized that the guy never gave me my receipt for £400+ back.]

In the afternoon I get agitated as my mum thinks it isn't worth the price. I agree that I can do without a new screen if I cannot find anyone cheaper anyway (because the screen is a fair size that the crack doesn't much bother me).

As a result, I dial the number on the receipt for collection which is an 0844 number. I am put through to a call centre? rather than the store and ask to be forwarded to the Cabot Circus branch. She asks me why I have called today and I explain I want to collect my laptop rather than sending it off for repair. I am put onto hold and then she answers, tells me she has conveyed my wishes to the staff at the store and I may collect it the day after. It will not go anywhere.

Monday: I bring my receipt to the till. A different member of staff tells me the laptop has been sent off already for repair. I tell him that I was assured it would be here. He says that he doesn't know where it is and would have to investigate and phone me later. I ask for my £50 back too and the man says that it's non-refundable. I tell him that I was at no point told that this sum was non-refundable and the term "deposit", used repeatedly, had inferred otherwise. I am refused my refund.

I decide to complain to the manager, who keeps asking me what it is that I actually want (basically this means that he can't retrieve my laptop at present so what else is there to be said)? I tell him I want to file a complaint and my £50 back. He insists it's non-refundable and gets the staff member I initially spoke to today to look at the email correspondences to and from the store. I am told there was no email about keeping my laptop in the store. I explain that the man I spoke to on Sunday said the laptop would be sent off on Wednesday and I don't understand how it has left the store anyway. He says without a reference number from my phone call or the name of the woman there was no complaint I can file. (In my horrendous anger and frustration, I forgot that the guy I spoke to on Sunday had a lot to answer to). I left the store and travelled 20km back to my home.

Any advice on getting my £50, filing complaints? (I also realized that the manager had not even apologized). I am so angry that returning the laptop that should have been instore yesterday is not enough to appease me and as a sign of goodwill the least they could have done was return my £50. A word of advice to all laptop buyers - avoid PC world like the plague.

  • Help with fabric choice?

I've just bought my first proper sewing machine and the first thing I want to make is a sort of canvas bag for it. Would canvas be an appropriate material? Or calico? Heavy, medium or light???

I need the fabric to hold a lot of weight obviously - the machine weighs 5.5 kg :S .

    Thank you for your help!

  • Should I choose something new or completely different?

I've just gotten a letter through the post from my uni asking for my choices for my extra optional subject to supplement my main subject - English literature. I'm really indecisive though (I just want to do EVERYTHING! :D) and I'm just wondering whether it's best to do a closely related subject, i.e. American literature, as opposed to new/different subjects, e.g. politics and international studies, history or history of art.

  • The smallest amount you've been charged customs on?

Some people I know have been charged customs on parcels that cost as little as £18. What is the smallest amount you've been charged customs on and how much was it?

  • Can you share makeup without spreading bacteria?

My friend isn't confident with makeup so I offered to bring some cosmetics to test them out on her. I've ordered a new eyeshadow palette, etc so they'll be clean, but is there anyway I can stop contamination? (Obviously this won't work with mascaras but things like eyeshadows and lip products?)

  • Am I right to be suspicious?

I stayed in a B&B in Canterbury overnight (9th to 10th). In the morning I checked out and I paid by cash - I have a receipt. So imagine my shock when I found out that a hotel in Canterbury has charged me £60 on the 10th Feb! The hotel had a name I didn't recognize and I now know that the B&B do not charge under that name.

The question is, 'am I right to suspect the B&B is responsible'? I used the card to give security details to the B&B owner - and money is only taken from this particular card for one thing: phone bills. I have never given to anyone else or used it for any other purpose. (It just happens to be the only card I had around when I phoned <-- details exchanged by phone. Not email!) I still have the card on me, so I don't think it was stolen at any point (if it was, obviously someone out it back!). The B&B owner also told me that there is a hotel by the stated name in Canterbury. Surely this cannot be a coincidence!? Surely she has either used the details herself or been indiscreet and someone else has gotten hold of my details!

  • Would you let me tutor your kids?

I'm seventeen years old and have just finished my AS courses in critical thinking, English literature, history, geography and physics. I also took the general studies exam.

I'd like to tutor kids so that I can raise some money for some of the upcoming year's expenses (e.g. a new laptop, prom, school trips) and I do enjoy working with children, so I thought perhaps I could give this a try.

I'm thinking I could tutor at GCSE level and below in selected subjects. My GCSE results:

    A* in chemistry

As in English, English literature, religious studies, geography, biology

Bs in German, design & technology, physics, maths

    C in fine art.

So my question is simple; parents, would you let me tutor your children?

  • Does this sound okay?

Job appliction form asked me why I wanted to apply for this job and what of my qualities ... (The job is to be a Library Customer Assisstant). Thanks in advance for your help. Any criticsm is welcome.

I am a dedicated individual, shown by my grades at GCSE and AS level (I am currently in the process of finishing my exams). I have great attitude having worked in my parents' family business for the past four years and am accustomed to communicating with customers face-to-face as well as via telephone. Always happy to answer any inquiries, I am friendly and helpful and enjoy reading immensely - I aim to continue my English Literature studies at university. Although my IT skills are not the best, I am an eager learner and display determination and perserverence in overcoming obstacles. I have sufficient computing skills in using the internet, email and am satisfactory at typing.

I have chosen to apply for this job because primarily I want to earn more money for going to university in the future. I also would like to be more independent from my parents and experience the workplace minus the pressense of family members for an extended period of time, as opposed to short periods of time as is the case with work experiece.

  • What is my job description?

I work for my parents' take away an have never been given a job title - I never applied to work for them, it was kind of expected. I'm applying for a job and they've asked me about my past employment.

Should I make a "job title" up? Could you help?

What I do is: taking orders from customers in the shop and on the phone and help pack meals into bags.

  • Applying to university ...?

I'm applying to university in September (so I'm starting in 2010),but I haven't decided what subject/s to do yet. I want to do English Literature, but might decide to a joint course with Philosophy.

I want to do AS Philosophy in the next year, to see whether I enjoy it. (I couldn't do it this year as their weren't enough students who wanted do it to at my sixth form).

Will there not be enough time for me to decide? When I apply for university in September, will I be able to change my chosen course?

  • If I could improve my school I would...?

I'm going to write a manifesto this Easter holiday for an election to a committee at my school. Although I know some of the points I want to improve about my school, I was wondering what others would like to change about their schools. Please answer sensibly.

  • Does this make sense?

The Commander's sentiment towards his wife differs greatly than that of Serena Joy's to her partner.

It's a sentence from my English Lit. essay, but I don't understand why my teacher has underlined the word than. Is it wrong? How do I correct it?

    Thanks for your help!

  • Books for an eleven year old boy...?

I want to buy a book for my eleven year old brother for Christmas.

Something with quite a bit of action in it and not too indepth. My parents usually end up buying him a games console or a game (along with ever other week!) so I told them I would help them find a present this year. I'm considering Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Name this poem......?

I remember this poem from when I was younger about race. It's written from the point of view of a black person (or by a black person perhaps) and he writes about the adjective coloured. He states that it is incorrect since when white people are cold they go blue, angry red, etc - something along those lines. Can anybody help?
