Easiest place/city to find a decent paying job in USA?
I'm currently living in NYC as it has always been my dream. However, making just over minimum wage and supplementing my income with savings isn't very long term financially viable. Is there a US city/place where I could easily find a job which pays a decent amount so I could live within my means? I have a bachelors degree and mostly have worked in offices but would be open for anything really. Thanks!
2 AnswersOther - United States8 years agoCan teachers in Australia take a vacation every year?
If they can afford it, obviously.
Can they take a 3-4 week holiday at the end of the year or do they have to attend development days etc? Is there a reason they couldn't leave the country?
1 AnswerTeaching8 years agoObsessing and constantly changing mind?
I am always analysing something, most of the time I think about what I'm going to do for a job and for the rest of my life. I see something or hear about a lifestyle and think, that sounds good, so in my mind I think about what I would do if I were to choose that job or lifestyle. I just like to plan things a lot, even if I don't intend to follow through. I like to envision or write out potential life scenarios. I also obsess about small weird things, like if I have spare coins, how I can get rid of them because I hate coins, but i will think about purchases to the nearest cent.
What is this obsession indicative of, and how can I enjoy the present rather than obsessing over thoughts and what I will do in the future? Before you write me off as obsessive compulsive, I am a slob, not a neat freak, so it is specific to my obsessive thoughts, I'm not anal retentive about everything. Thanks.
2 AnswersPsychology8 years agoProbability of winning lottery if you enter multiple times?
Say you enter a lottery, each time the same number of participants also enter. Each day you enter the same lottery, each day there is a 1% chance of winning.
Because you are entering multiple times, are you more likely to win?
Does more opportunities to win = more likely to win even though the probability is still 1%?
Are chance of winning and probability two distinct concepts in this case?
I think I'm overthinking but thanks for any insights.
3 AnswersMathematics8 years agoAdvice about a year in NYC?
Hi
I'm on a 1 year US visa, originally from Australia. I've been in NYC 4.5 weeks (was traveling 6 weeks before that) and I'm still looking for work (not looking for anything special, just something in an office or retail - have experience in both). I don't know anyone here and although I'm slowly meeting people (i have two acquaintances and am meeting with two people on the weekend) my lack of social interaction paired with nothing constructive to do during the day is getting me down. I wanted some advice as to how long people have waited before feeling settled in NYC or any new city.
How long do you think it will be before I can find a job?
How long before make a few friends or feel more at home socially?
Is there a place or industry where will they hire me?
Is a year long enough to feel sort of settled here? Or does making friends and a life in the city take years? Should I just go back to traveling place to place and meeting fellow backpackers?
How long should I stick it out before heading home or to a new destination?
Thanks, sorry for the rant.
4 AnswersNew York City8 years agoHow long before you felt settled and made friends in a new city?
I'm new to NYC, I knew no one before coming and am starting to get to know one or two people, but I'm starting to get lonely.
Obviously your answer will be different to everyone's, but how long before you felt comfortable in a new city you moved to? When did you feel you had a good friend, and that it felt like your home?
2 AnswersFriends8 years agoAm I emotionally stunted?
I'm 22, gay, and am new to the US, been here for about 10 weeks.
I've started seeing a guy who is perfectly nice and we get along. I don't think he's 'the one' but so far things are going well, we have fun. But, still, it's not exciting even though I haven't had a boyfriend before. I don't miss him, I'm not dying to see him again, it's just, nice to hang out.
When I was younger I didn't have much self esteem, I was in the closet until age 19/20, and although a briefly saw a guy before I left my home country (I wasn't really into him either, same situation), I've never had a serious relationship or dated a guy for very long.
So, whilst my friends were off having first boyfriends and girlfriends in high school, when they were starting to have real relationships during college, I was alone and kind of sabotaging my own happiness. So, now, I'm at a point where I can start fresh, and I'm ready to be emotionally happy, but the thought of a new relationship isn't really appealing to me. What is this indicative of? Am I 'emotionally stunted' due to a lack of a formative emotional period in my life, and if so, how do I outgrow this and be ready to have an adult relationship?
Obviously this is a cursory synopsis of my life and you'd have to know more about me, but is this a thing and what do you think is my problem?
Thanks

2 AnswersComedy8 years agoHow to rent a sublet apartment in NYC?
I am an Australian going to NYC in September with a J1 Visa. I would like to stay in NYC for 6 months.
I may or may not have a job lined up when I go there, but I will have over $20,000 in savings. Would I be able to rent a room in an apartment? What do they require before you can rent an apartment or a room? Are sublet apartments usually rented out with other roommates?
What should I expect from this process?
Thanks!

1 AnswerPsychology8 years agoOne year in America; where to go when?
Hi
I'll be traveling around America for 13 months (I have a 12 month Visa application that has been submitted with a one month travel period at the end) starting in September or October, and am wondering where I should go. I know I want to spend 4-6 months in New York City, a couple of months in California (LA/San Diego/San Fran/San Jose) and also maybe Miami for a few week to a month.
Other places I want to visit:
Seattle
Chicago
Boston
Hawaii
New Orleans
Washington DC
Phoenix
Pittsburgh
Las Vegas
amongst others, time permitting.
So, when would be best to visit these places? I was thinking of doing NY in the winter and being there for Christmas and New Years but was wondering for coastal places like California, is it equally as nice in summer/winter etc or is it best to go in the summer?
I have a lot of money saved up so if you could stay on the topic of which months are the best time to visit these places, that would be really helpful :)
Thanks for any help
4 AnswersOther - United States8 years agoWill I, an Australian, make friends traveling USA alone?
I want to travel the US for a year (on a special Visa) and maybe live/work in NYC for six months. How easy is it for a traveler like me to make friends with both fellow travelers and locals, and how would I meet these people? In the US in general and also specific to NYC. Thanks
3 AnswersNew York City8 years agoCan a traveler on a Visa live and work in New York City?
I qualify for a year long graduate US Visa, and have a few questions about NYC.
Is it possible to rent in an (become roommates in someone's) apartment when you're a traveler with no income at present (but you can illustrate you have plenty of funds)? Or will no landlord allow you to move in with another renter with no steady income? Can you contact someone who's renting directly and move in with them on a temporary (i.e. 6 month) basis?
Alternatively, where would I be able to live in NYC for an extended period of time? Are there any decent sharehouses?
Also what are some jobs I would be hired for? I was thinking of applying for just office/admin work but if they see that the terms of my Visa allow me to work for only one year, will they consider me? What are some jobs that I would be hired for in NYC?
1 AnswerNew York City8 years agoIs it unrealistic to plan to travel for 2 years?
Is it unrealistic to plan to travel the US for a year and then Europe for a year?
I have saved up a lot of money and am quite frugal so I'm not asking if it's unrealistic in terms of cost, mostly in terms of emotional terms-being away from home for so long. I know this is very much a depending-on-the-person question but for the standard person do you think it is doable? Can you find social solace in meeting other people on the road?
(I have never been away from home for more than 2 months at a time so am unsure of how I will go).
3 AnswersPacking & Preparation8 years agoIs it stupid to live in New York for a year?
I'm from Australia and qualify for a year long Visa for the US.
I don't know what I want to do for a job or anything so I think I'd like to move away from my home and comfort zone for a while. I want to move somewhere to explore what I'm like as a person and 'find myself' if you'll forgive the cheesy cliche.
I have always wanted to go to New York City so I think I might like to travel the US for a month or two before living in NYC for the remaining part of the year.
My question is, is this a good idea or not?
I have a fair bit of money saved up and will be allowed to work so I don't think money will be a big issue, I'll just try to live within my means without having to dip in to my savings too often.
Is New York City a good place to go alone, where you know no one, and try and start new for a while? Or will I just end up being bitter and twisted?
Thanks for any insights/help.

5 AnswersHigher Education (University +)8 years agoMale weight loss 10-15kg?
I want to lose 10-15kg in the coming months from my stomach and back. I have pretty good arms and legs but it's just the middle area that I want to target. I know people say you can't spot target weight loss but what are some things I should be doing in terms of exercise and how much per day, to cut out fat in my stomach, love handles and lower back whilst not diminishing muscle? How many calories should I be eating a day?
How long would I expect to do this if I were really committed? I weigh 90kg and am 178cm tall.
Thanks for any help
16 AnswersDiet & Fitness8 years agoWhen should I go backpacking?
I'm 21 and I want to visit most countries in the world.
I want to go around Europe, USA, South America and Asia mostly.
Am I right in thinking I should do Europe and USA now whilst I'm young, and then save some money before returning to visit South America and Asia (I know I won't be old by this point but you know what I mean)?
Basically, which continents/countries should I do now and which can wait until I'm not such a party person, and I won't miss out on the party side of the traveling?
