  • How did Roman legionaries counter chariots?

I've seen it written casually on forums that roman legionaries had manoeuvers that could deal with chariots, other than just shooting at them with auxiliary archers - are there any sources that tell us about this, and if not, how do you imagine they would? They logically must have been able to - look at the low Roman death toll (still reasonably low if we take into account bias) at the battle of Watling Street...

  • Economic reasons for slave states positions on tariffs?

I'm studying the lead-up to the US civil war. There were situations like the nullification crisis, in which South Carolina tried to nullify the federal tariffs of 1828 and 1832. What were the broad economic reasons for southern plantation-based slave states opposing tariffs?

Would I be right in thinking it is to do with them having less of an interest in federal investment in infrastructure (railways, etc)?

    Thanks.

  • Purpose of the military of the United Kingdom?

British military spending is the 4th highest in the world, and though dwarfed by the spending of the US, we spend over a third of the amount CHINA does (comparable to japan and france. out of the three only japan faces significant threats). In UK politics, and in the media, aid spending (for example) of 0.56% of national income is heavily criticised, (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2343683/Br... while CUTS on military spending are also heavily criticised, despite the fact I would be comfortable with my safety in west sussex if the aid budget was doubled and the military budget halved!

My point is that given our non-intervention policy in syria, the constant mantra from whoever is in opposition in parliament to "learn from iraq", and constant backlash against getting tied up in the middle east, are we even going to participate in foreign intervention, and do we even need to? "I do not think it was wise that the UK should be seen acting as some sort of global policeman.”- David Ruffley the dissenting tory MP from the recent parliament vote on air strikes against syria.

Then what is the Navy, Army and RAF's brief? Don't get me wrong, I am a bit of an amateur historian and would be sad to see many regiments, many ships and squadrons go. But we can't sustain the fourth-most-potent military in the world justified solely by patriotism and the need for jobs, can we? I am aware there's a case for our duty to the world given that much of our power originates from an empire, but does it even look like we're going to carry that out? We're actually building two carriers now, and with respect to any country with larger-than average international interest they are vital. but what are they for regarding Britain, other than.. the falklands...? I know we still have foreign interests, and we have foreign obligations. But politically no-one wants to have another iraq, and events in egypt and syria are perfect examples of how the world isn't black and white, normally a certain shade of al-quaeda.

I am aware I am not as well-informed as others. That's why I'm asking the question. What is the military's real brief, and if it's not to work for NATO and the UN and human rights (putting it simply), do we genuinely need such a potent one to defend our tiny island?

For the record I was against military intervention in syria, all for humanitarian aid and education to ensure that radical islamists don't do a palestine and get demcratically voted in when it's over. However, I was disappointed that the vote was turned against Cameron not by genuine belief, but by (what seemed to be) political bitching.

  • can I publish this facebook page- Facebook rules and UK law?

I have an unpublished page on facebook, and I want to know if I can make it public. It is about a business, Lorikeet Jewellery, with a large amount of stock and it's own brand, logo, leaflets, boxes and packaging. The company belonged to my dad (in the early 90s), and I want to sell the remaining stock. Problem is, we no longer maintain the copyright to the name of the company, and it is not registered on anything, though there is no other lorikeet in jewellery.

At this point I would just advertise it to friends, and we would begin by having people pay cash in person (that's why we just have a fb page, not an ebay shop or a paypal arrangement). however, along with telling me if I can publish this page, what would be the best way to do it if we wanted to properly sell to more people- avoiding having to register, become a full comany, pay more taxes...

As you can probably tell, I need this in relatively simple terms.

  • updating my graphics driver?

I have been doing some gaming, and in a few games i have seen there is no option to enable antialiasing; it's greyed out. I'm using a desktop PC, it's not designed for gaming but not too low-end. my graphics card is, according to dxdiag, an intel(R) G33/G31. this is, i think not very good (?), but considering the games I play tend to be a few years old, and the PC can handle all other game graphics settings on full, this shouldn't be a problem.

muddling through reams of gibberish, jargon and stuff on the internet, I realised updating my driver might help, and I was led to this page: http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/graphi...

so sure enough, it says i need to update, gave me a file to update from 7.15.0010.1666 to 15.12.4.1666. so it works, i re-start... and according to dxdiag i am still on 7.15... and still, no joy with graphics in games. what have I done wrong, what else could be the error with the anti-aliasing in the game?

  • Artists who show people "caged"?

For my gcse art, one of the stages is to do copies of artist's work, to inspire us. My title was "caged" and I was wworking on the premise of people being emotionally, not literally, caged. On this stage, the fist artist I chose was francis bacon and the screaming pope (mostly because it's well known and striking) but I need another who better represents my ideas. Any suggestions?

  • Fallout 3 broken steel not fully loaded?

Bought all the addons for broken steel on steam, but only ticked the boxes to load the files for operation: anchorage and broken steel so far. None of the new locations from broken steel seemed to appear, and therefore I guess side missions won't work. Anchorage worked fine. The game has continued past the final original mission, "take it back" but the final objective is listed as not complete. I can do the add on missions though, and the purifier is working.

I have a win7 PC, system requirements are ok.

    Any ideas?

  • Roman name of the river Medway.?

Anyone know the Latin name for the river Medway? There likely was one, as they had a large battle there during the invasion in 43 AD. I checked Cassius Dio's account, I don't think he mentions the name. Anyway, if I found it it would be useless because I don't know where on the internet to find the latin versions. Help please!

  • What were the status of British East India Company regiments?

A search of Honourable East India Company units (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Honourable_E... showed me that many had the prefix "Royal" and are referred to as British Army Units on their pages. I know that they were a private army of British troops, European mercenaries, and mostly sepoys. As a matter of interest, although know they were in practice a private military, endorsed by and working with the British government and army, were their regiments officially British Army units? or did this differ between sepoys and europeans? I've always been a bit confused as to the EIC's autonomy and relationship with the British government. Thanks!

  • Who built stane street?

The Roman road in the south of the UK, Chichester to London. When was it built, exactly, or don't we know? And who built it, was it the Second Legion, when they were based in Chichester? Books tend to concentrate on the invasion, so until I find one just on the area, it's up to you guys.

I asked a similar question, but this is a bit more specific, i think.

    Thanks :)

  • Should Americans be taught European history?

I'm British and know little of these matters, but, I'm interested to know, are American kids taught European history? After all our ancestors are yours just as much :) do you see English and British history as yours? If you're not taught it, should it be taught in US schools? Or is your 300 years of admittedly rich history enough?

Tbh I'd like it, it would mean we saw it as that we have more in common.

No disrespect, do you think it is ommited because of US nationalism?

Most interested in Americans points if view!

  • 40s AD history of Legio II Augusta?

Basically, I'm interested in their history in the first century as I live in a village, pulborough, on Stane Street, a significant roman road, near Regionorum, or nowadays Chichester. Also, I respect Vespasian in some ways and know he was their legatus during the invasion in 43 (and had left this post by 51)- but can't find out if he stayed in command for long- I would be delighted to discover that the second built stane street under his command. Most telling would be to find out exactly when stane street was built. Basically if anyone has any more in-depth knowledge of the significance of any towns in the area, or knows a better place (other than google!) for me to look this up. Thanks :)

  • During WW2, would the United States have tried to liberate the United Kingdom?

As a Brit subscribing to the belief that America did not "save our asses" during the war, and a bit of an amateur historian, (it was however not ourselves either, but the soviets in my opinion) I am interested to know if the Americans had any concrete plans for a counter-invasion, insurgency support, harbouring our government (I'm sure our MPs would be happy to run to the States) or troops, or an evacuation method. Also, I want to know if they were prepared to continue into occupied Europe. I am aware that operation sea lion was never feasible, but the allied intelligence was not sure about that until at least 1941 (the creation of the Auxiliaries and LDV being a testament to this), so contingency plans may have been made)

I noted from the existence of "War Plan Red" - an invasion plan of Canada to bring the empire to it's knees, that less than a decade before the war the American government felt no real duty to the UK, despite our strong cultural, historic and linguistic links. Would public opinion in the US require a counter invasion?

I tried the normal internet sources but can't find what i'm looking for. I need somone who knows where to look. Thanks! :)
