If you go on a secondment to a sister company, can your salary and benefits be downgraded?
I have been wanting to break into another department at work, however, positions are few are far between.
There is a 12 month secondment opportunity which I think I d be grateful, however, it is advertised as one band below what I currently am on within the company.
I am still considering this for long term career growth, however, due to having a commitments my worry is we are paid within a band range. So if I took a 12 month secondment to a lower band, can my salary be downgraded, or as it s not a permanent position would I just simply transfer across keeping current salary and perks?
2 AnswersOther - Business & Finance6 years agoAdvise needed for gross misconduct hearing?
I work for a big PLC and I am facing a disciplinary hearing for gross misconduct because I authorised a payment beyond my sign off limit. This event occurred 11 months ago, and I was told it was okay 2 days after the event because it was in the companies interest and was the correct decision to make. My employer is now just using this against me to get rid of me as they have no other grounds to.
This has come about because I have recently accepted a new job with a competitor, and one of my colleagues has found out and told my manager. I was given the ultimatum of either staying with my current employers, or "regret the consequences". I am now facing the latter.
I have been told today I have a hearing on Tuesday for the above, this is a day before I go on holiday. I am driving to Spain and if I were to be dismissed, which I can be from the above charges, I would loose my company car and ruin my holiday. This is 100% the reason they are pushing this through as it has got personal between my manager and I.
I simply want to get past Tuesday so I can have my holiday, and hand my notice in on my return as initially planned. My rights say I can postpone the meeting by 5 days if I cannot get a trade union rep in time. If I do this, and postpone to 5 days later, I will be on leave and cannot attend.
Am I better handing my notice in now, or just wait until I'm back. And would the above buy me a few days. Any other suggestions?
2 AnswersLaw & Ethics7 years agoCareer advice?
I have a bit of dilemma with my career. I have recently accepted a new job, and have resigned from my current job. The reason for my resignation was I was head hunted for a more senior position at a competitor company, and also there have recently been some management changes and me not seeing eye to eye with my new boss so this pushed me into making the decision. Coming onto my question later, I have been with this company for the past 2 years and have really enjoyed it.
Now I have accepted this new role, which is roughly a £20,000 salary increase, better perks, however, I need to relocate. I do not have a family and only rent so this is no big deal.
Today, I have been approached from one of other managers at one of sister companies, who has heard about me leaving. Bottom line, he's offered me a position with them, exceeding my new jobs offer in both salary, perks, and position. This would mean I don't have to relocate also. I have got on with this guy since I first started, so I have been honest with him, and he's just told me not to worry and think it over.
The dilemma, as I told him is a) I've already accepted a new job and will be highly unprofessional to pull out and will ruin all future chances with them, and b) I've always though going back on your resignation always looks poor, and ruins future growth, however he said it's completely different and this wouldn't be the case due to the change in job role and talking through my reasons for leaving.
Ideas?
1 AnswerOther - Careers & Employment7 years agoHow long should a resignation letter be?
So I have formally accepted a new job, and it's time to hand in my notice.
I am a remote works, and see my boss once every couple of months. Due to Easter, he's off for 2 weeks, them I'm off for a week once he returns so I can't even go into the office to do it in person.
I'm going to have a send an email, and post a hard copy as I want the resignation date to be from the 15th.
As I'm not doing it in person, should I send a long winded letter expressing why I'm leaving, or just keep it short and sweet saying thank you etc.
Also, should I copy in my boss's boss due to him being on leave?
Thanks
3 AnswersLaw & Legal7 years agoJob offer letter question?
I have recently had an offer letter emailed over to me for a new job so we can get everything sorted ASAP.
I am relatively happy with everything, however, the attached offer letter in the email is saved as "Initial Offer Letter", rather than just "Offer Letter".
Do you think this means they are expecting to have to send a second because there's some negotiation to be done, or am I just looking into it too much.
Thanks.
4 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment7 years agoTransferring money to your current account from a credit card?
Hi guys,
I borrowed some money from a family member, and won't to pay the back as soon as possible as I hate owing family money. I needed to borrow the money as an emergency as my credit card got declined and I couldn't get it set back up when abroad so my brother transferred me some money.
I've had an email today from Barclaycard offering 0% Transfer money to your current account.
I've never done this before, but does this mean if I transfer £1000 to my current account, I get charged £19? and I don't have to pay it back until 1st October 2014? Or do I have to pay all of this back in next months credit card bill?
Details below:
Transfer money to your current account
Interest rate
0% Until 1 October 2014
Transfer fee
1.90% or a minimum of £1.90
Minimum transfer
£100.00
Maximum transfer

5 AnswersCredit7 years agoLow carb meal plan?
Hi All.
I have been putting it off for a while a now, and I have got to the point where I am far to overweight. I've changed my jobs recently so have been manic with that.
I want to loose 60lbs, so I'm going on a low carb diet. I've never dieted before, but the plan is to stick to this and completely change my eating habits. We'll see though...
I'm quite a fussy eater, so I've been trying to find meal examples online. Everything seems a bit to fancy for me. I like plain, bland food, and won't really get bored eating the same foods. Just wanted to check these foods are all okay...
Breakfast - I will eat these same foods every day
3 Rashers of Bacon, 1 Fried egg, Glass of Water.
Lunch -
Chicken/Tuna/Bacon/Beef salad (mainly just lettuce and cucumber and a tiny bit of red onion) - glass of water
And for Dinner, pretty much the same as lunch, just warm meat instead.
The one flavouring I quite like is Tomato Ketchup but told it has too many carbs. Don't know of an alternative to use?
14 AnswersDiet & Fitness7 years agoWould you relocate to Australia?
I have recently found myself thinking of relocating outside of the UK. I am quiet tempted to relocate to Australia for the different lifestyle, and nicer weather.
I am only 20, no other half, no kids, no commitments. I'm thinking if I did want to relocate, now is the time to do it. From looking online, the two main reasons which put people off is family and friends. I live 200 miles away from my parents currently anyway, and I only have a few close friends where in Milton Keynes (where I live now) who I have made from work.
Speaking of work, as that is the one of the big considerations. I currently work for Volkswagen Group UK, and have been talking with Volkswagen Group Australia. It is ultimately the same company as we are all subsidiaries of Volkswagen AG.
I've had a couple of webcam interviews over the past couple of weeks, and I am flying out next week for a proper interview. While I've been told it's to get a feel for the place as if I want the job, I am their only suitable candidate.
I'm going to take a two week holiday out there to try and get a feel for life out there. I've never even been there before. This has all come from an email I sent just enquiring about it; I wasn't expecting being faced with the possibility of moving, but now I'm quite getting into it. I've decided to book a Villa for the 2 weeks and do a self catering holiday rather than staying in a hotel to try and make it feel as if I were living out there catering for myself.
So my questions really are have you ever done it, would you recommend it, and what are the things to consider. It would be Sydney where I'd end up as that is where the Head Office is. The advertised salary is $70,000 AUD, but I've not really got into the nitty gritty about salary yet. They're paying for flights so one would hope they would help out with relocation if it all goes well. I don't have a house currently, so I would be looking to rent. I hear Sydney is actually more expensive than the UK.
I believe the tax rates on salary are quiet similar, and from doing a currency converter, the salary is close to my current one. I'd be given a car over there, so my main cost would be housing.
I'd be very grateful for peoples thoughts. Thanks in advance.
5 AnswersSydney7 years agoWhat happens if you don't pay all of your credit card bill?
Hi All,
So I've had a credit card for the last 2 years now. Use it for everything as it's more secure than my debit card.
Up to now, my credit card has been set to pay the full balance every month via direct debit.
Due to Christmas this year, I've found it a bit tight and spent more than I've brought home. I have a £3,000 bill for £2,000 I received.
The whole point of a credit card is for credit I guess, I've just never used that function before. If I don't pay the full amount, what are the consequences?
Is it just as simple as get charged interest for £1,000 I've not paid, or does this bring down my credit card score. I understand if you don't pay full stop the latter applies, but I will pay £2,000 off.
Thanks in advance.
12 AnswersCredit7 years agoWhere is a good place to meet girls?
I turned 20 last month, and think it's time to get into a relationship. I've never had a relationship before, just messed around with a couple girls back in high school.
The problem is, I find it really hard to meet girls. I left school at 16, and got a job, and have become a complete workaholic since. I have got myself into a decent position within my company, but this has given me a completely different lifestyle to most people my age. I only have a couple close friends my age, which are not local so only meet up occasionally. My friends are now work colleagues I've got close to, but are much older than me. Range between 28-50. We go out and play golf, watch football games, go for posh meals, go to the theatre, but I wouldn't say most 20 year olds end up doing that.
As a result, I've never really gotten into the clubbing seen. If anything, I really don't enjoy going out for a night on the town as drinking doesn't really do anything for me, and waking up with a hangover or ending up hooking up with some stranger on a one night stand is not appealing in the slightest to me.
The only place I meet girls is via work. I now travel a lot with work too as I'm a business development manager, so I'm not in an office all day to even get to know colleagues to well anymore. I do meet clients who you would consider asking out for a date, but I wouldn't want to jeopardise anything work related by putting my foot in it with a client.
The reason I'm asking this is I bought my first home a few months back (living with parents previously), and since then it's a bit lonely coming home each evening to an empty house. I've just got to the point where I feel it would be good to get into a relationship. I just have no idea on how where to meet new people??
It seems that it's only really by going out on the weekends is the only option, but I can't/don't want to do that because a) I don't enjoy it, and b) I'd imagine that if I were to meet somewhere there, out lifestyles wouldn't be too compatible...
Any advise would be much appreciated.
3 AnswersSingles & Dating7 years agoCareer Advise (should I apply for this promotion?)?
To make it as simple as I can...
I was working in sales with my current employers,
I then left for a promotion (also relocated to the other end of the UK).
I left that position last month and rejoined my old company as I didn't get on with the new job due to the area I was living, and didn't gel with my new boss.
Anyhow, so when I rejoined my old company, I took a step down as they didn't have the position I was currently doing.
That managers position has just come up which I am fully trained for, and have been doing it for the past year, and would love to go for it, just worried as I've only been back for a month.
Would you apply for an internal promotion (going to back to what you were doing), or do I need to stay with what I'm doing for at least 6-12 months before seeking advancement within the same company.
4 AnswersLaw & Legal8 years agoNew job now working out. Advise?
I have recently accepted a new job at a major global brand. I work for a franchise. I love the brand, love the job, can't stand the franchise.
I was promised perks in the interview which haven't been fulfilled., a certain company car, mobile, laptop etc. I am also largely commission based and the commission structure is also not as promised.
I have only been in this role for a month, so worried about jumping to another franchise doing the same job. I have sat down with my manager today to express my concerns, and I have basically been told tough. I may get those things once I have proven myself, but until then this is how it is.
Is there anything else I can do before jumping ship?
4 AnswersLaw & Legal8 years agoCaught speeding in a company car by employer...?
So nothing to do with police, so okay in that respect.
I had an email today from HR saying I've got a meeting tomorrow regarding 'my driving on the 5th August'.
I took a brand new company car home which turns out has a tracker in it. I hit 130 mph on the way home!
Not sure what the best thing to do is. I'll own up and say, yes, I was just driving like an idiot, but how would you try and rectify the situation?
8 AnswersCorporations8 years agoLandlord won't refund deposit. Advice?
I have recently moved due to work, and I am having a little problems with my previous landlord.
I paid a deposit, and he will not refund it. The reason being I have only been renting for 4 months. It was meant to be a minimum 12 months, however, no contract was provided so noting has been signed. I also categorically asked when I stared is there a way to get out of it sooner, and he said yes, it was all in the contract I would receive.
I have then given him a months notice of me moving out, and he has told me I need to find a replacement as per the contract. I have explained none has been provided nor signed, but I am not getting anywhere.
It was a pretty hefty deposit (£800) so I will be getting this back somehow.
The other problem is it's not been put into one of these government deposit holding facilities.
Advice please?
4 AnswersRenting & Real Estate8 years agoReturning an item to Arogs?
I bought an air conditioning unit today due the hot weather. It was however £280! Think I'm not getting some buyers remorse as it just feels like cooler air. A fan would have probably done the job.
As I have now used the product, I cannot return it under the I no longer want it. I'm hoping I can get out of it as it's not as described.
The description say the remote included 2xAAA batteries. It doesn't.
It also say it's 65 decibels, it's 90.
Would they give me a refund for that?
5 AnswersCorporations8 years agoPossibly moving to Scotland. What's it like?
A pretty open question to be honest.
I've been head hunted for a sales manager position in Scotland (I currently live in Cheltenham). I've never ventured to Scotland before, so I would be going into this blind. I don't have a wife or children to move up with me, so that's not a problem.
The job is in Aberdeen, and I hear this is a nice place to live, but also hear it's quiet expensive.
But just a general question really? Any of you English guys moved up there? Good quality of living (i.e. laid back, stress free living on the whole), weather, pay, council tax, house prices, utility bills, community spirt etc.
Thanks
3 AnswersOther - Home & Garden8 years agoShould I turn down this job offer?
I recently interview for 2 sales manager position outside of my company.
The first interview was good, but I found the manager (my potential new boss) was a bit rude, arrogant, and I think I wouldn't enjoy working under him. However, he has offered me a job which I would love and is the next step in my career.
The second interview was just as good. I liked the premises, I likeed the staff, and I got on really well with the manager. He did however say at the time he was away for 2 weeks (one week now gone), but he would get back to me afterwards. So I have not been offered this postion (hopefully yet).
I would prefer the second position, but I don't know if I would get it. Either way, I will wait to see what the second interview come back to me with. But would you turn down a promotion if you didn't like the boss?
3 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment8 years agoThink of moving. Any ideas?
So I am 20, but not your average 20 year old. I work as a Sales Manager for BMW, so I'm relatively well off for my age. I don't go out clubbing every night, but I do like to on an occasion. My parents moved to Italy 3 years ago, so I decided to stay in the UK, so I have no commitment to move near family. I am not in a relationship currently, so I again have no commitments there.
There are tons of sales manager positions out there, so I wouldn't have a problem finding a job...
I am looking to buy my first house, somewhere with nice weather (although I do appreciate this England), somewhere with an OK night life, somewhere with good restaurants/bars.
I currently live in York, but I just find the age of people around here is quiet high.
I'm thinking Bristol, possibly Brighton, but just looking for some suggestions...
2 AnswersOther - Home & Garden8 years agoQuestion regarding age of consent?
This is in UK where the age of consent is 16.
So I am 19, my girlfriend is 17. The difference is my girlfriend is Swedish. She has been living in the UK for the last year, but is still a Swedish citizen. The age of consent in Sweden is 18.
I presume in England it's fine, but in Sweden it's not? Or does the fact that she is Swedish citizen change that?
5 AnswersLaw & Ethics8 years agoDo girls like a hairy chest?
I have just come out of a 3 year relationship, so I'm going back on the dating scene.
As I have been nice and faithful over those years, I haven't hooked up with anyone in a while, hence the question.
Would you say I need to start shaving my chest, or just leave it as it is.
