  • How much should someone be given?

I found out from a friend today, that in the area where she lives, the amount of money a single person receives on Welfare, is $572.00 a month. That's it. They allow $356 for shelter, and a whopping $216 for food.

What kind of crap food are you going to live on, with $216 for a whole month, and where are you going to live for $356 or less?

It's disgusting and insulting. What are the Welfare of social services like in your area? Are they any better?

  • Video downloader, but not just for youtube or google?

    Hey,

Can anyone recommend a free program/share ware that I can download for the kids to use (so nothing really complicated) for downloading video clips from youtube, google video, and just regular websites?

So many out there and most look like crap and have no reviews. If they aren't recommended I'd like to avoid them. Anyone have any good ones?

    Thanks!

    A.

  • Poll! What's on your desktop (as in wallpaper)?

And what's your screen saver. Be honest now!

My wallpaper is the pillsbury dough boy, caught while dancing.

Screen saver - rotating pics of my kids on vacation. Makes me smile!

  • Are plastic water bottles safe or not?

    Ok.

Today I was talking on the phone with my mom. At some point the subject changed to bottled water - why I don't know, but it had her clucking and throwing feathers everywhere. Mom, is a chicken. Mom is afraid of everything that moves, and several things that don't. She makes me nuts with this some days.

Anyway, long story short, she's going on about how I shouldn't have bottled water - I should use the big dispenser and go with the bulk stuff in those monster bottles that weigh a ton. I'm not keen on it.

I know there was talk about baby bottles being affected, but did the whole thing extend to water bottles like you buy in the stores? I thought it was just HARD plastic bottles - like the large plastic soda bottles, not the short water ones.

Anyone have any info on this so I can sweep up moms feathers and not have to deal with this again?

    TIA

  • Does the Soviet Union/Russia have a stock market?

A question one of my kids asked me...no idea why, but if he's curious enough to ask...I'll ask all of you, because I don't know and can't find anything online about it.

There's the Dow, NYSE, the Nikkei in Japan, ones in Canada, etc. The UK and Australia and some European countries have stock exchanges too.

Their economy underwent some huge changes in the past 20 years, no doubt....but....does the Soviet Union have a western style stock exchange?

  • How many of you would use a matchmaking service?

I'm seeing all these commercials suddenly for match.com, e-harmony, etc. Matching people on compatibility sounds ok, but I have my doubts about whether or not they can really match you based on an online personality quiz.

So, I'm curious. What do you all think of places like that...

Do you think they are as successful in matching as they claim?

Would you use a service like that?

Have you ever used a service like that?

    Be honest now!

  • Which do you think is....?

There are two groups of people, each in a different room, across the hall from each other.

In room number 1, the people - 10 of them, are seated around a large circular table. In the center of the table, sits a large casserole dish full of stew. It's steaming hot and the smell of it makes you so hungry your mouth waters the instant it hits you. Everyone at the table, is pale, boney, and miserable. Each has a spoon with a 3 foot long handle, taped to their wrist. They have been unable to eat, because apparently the spoons can't be made to reach their mouths.

In room number 2, there are 10 people also, and they are seated around a large circular table, at it's center, a large casserole dish full of stew sits. This one is just as aromatic and wonderful as the dish in room 1. Like the people in room 1, these people have long handled spoons taped to their wrists as well, yet they are pink-cheeked, plump, and happy.

Which group strikes you as the more greedy one? Why?

  • What have YOU given to charity today?

Ok. With everyone scrambling to make ends meet right now, it's hard to find extra for the usual holiday charity drives. We are all going through that.

So here's the deal. If you go to www.freerice.com you can do a vocabulary quiz, and for each correct answer you give, the United Nations World Food Program will donate 20 grains of rice to help end hunger. It doesn't sound like much, but if you gave it 20 minutes of your time, it could be 1200 grains of rice, which would be a meal for a small child in the third world.

You can change the options and do French, German, Italian, or Spanish vocabulary, or switch over to Chemistry, Geography, Art or some Math quizzes. Whatever works for you!

So....what have you done for charity today - how much rice have you donated? Let's see who has the biggest brain, and heart.

My total thus far today, 1020 grains.

  • Read today online about a lawsuit against Obama...?

...and that they hoped he would lose so McCain could "get in".

It was in a comment someone left in response to an article about him in a UK newspaper. I haven't heard anything like this before today. Anyone know what it's about?

  • A Question for Windows Vista users?

Not a user of Vista so I'm lost on this one. My sister just got a pc with it, and is having a problem with her over-controlling husband trying to set it up so he can screen sit and watch her activities from afar. The weasel.

Anyway, is there a function in Vista, as there is in XP, for "remote assistance"? I want to have her check for this, to make sure that he's not set it up with an open invitation for himself to tinker on her machine, but I have no idea where to locate it, if it exists in Vista.

    Anyone know?

    TIA

  • Poll: Which Bread????

    Ok. White or Whole Wheat?

Got the runs? You might think about white bread - in the 1800's, it was eaten as a remedy for the trots because it acts as "a rectal plug" because it moves so slowly through your body, and has no fiber. Pretty gross, eh? LOL

  • Not that it would happen, but what if Obama...?

Ok. He's set to give his acceptance speech tonight.

Not that it's even possible, but what would happen if Obama were to suddenly stop and say "you know what, I've changed my mind....I don't wanna do this after all."

With the intent in place, would Biden take over, or would it all revert back to the voting results?

  • On election night, what do you do?

What do you do - are you the kind to sit by the tv and watch the horse race unfold - are you more likely to take a pass, and pop in a DVD and wait for the whole thing to blow over?

What is it? For me - logically, it has to be the pop up toaster!

What do YOU think is the greatest invention since sliced bread came along?

  • Angelina and Brad have had their twins. It's in the news....but does anyone really care about these two?

Seriously. I'm fed up with hearing about them. Nice that they have adopted, nice that they are having kids together. Good for them.

But the media treats them like she's the first woman in the world to have babies! Unless she's singlehandedly going repopulate the world, I don't think all the media attention and hype is really necessary.

Is anyone else fed up with the Angelina and Brad love train??
