  • How do I change the output current of a small plug-in transformer?

    I have a burned out class 2 transformer that converted 120 V, 60 Hz, 9 W input to 12 VAC .47 A output. I cannot find an exact replacement, but found one with 12 VAC, .93 A output.

    I naively thought adding a resistor to one of the wires from this transformer would, in accordance with Ohm's Law, change the output so this would be a suitable replacement.

    Have:

    V = IR

    12 = (.93)R

    12.9 = resistance inherent in the transformer

    Want:

    V = IR

    12 = (.47)R

    25.53 = R Therefore, add 12.6 ohms resistance.

    I was wrong.

    What should I do, instead?

  • First use of "crickets" to mean silence?

    I am curious about the origin of phrases using the word "crickets" to indicate silence. Most forums posit its origins with movies or television, but Henry David Thoreau used it in his 1854 address "Slavery in Massachusetts":

    "I listen to hear the voice of a Governor, Commander-in-Chief of the forces of Massachusetts. I hear

    only the creaking of crickets and the hum of insects which now fill the summer air."

    Is anyone aware of an earlier use?
