  • How do I get into the German Embassy in DC?

I'm attending an event at the German Embassy in Washington DC this evening, and I do not know where I am supposed to enter from through the gate. How do you get in? There does not appear to be a pedestrian entrance, or any guard post near the gate, or any means of contacting a guard to open the gate from the outside.

Is there anyone who can tell me where and how I get through the gate? In details too, please. I'm very confused.

  • Any suggestions on how to cover an old book?

So I got this old German-English dictionary from 1899 (courtesy of my German teacher). The pages are all there, but the book cover is missing. Essentially, it's just the pages, bound by the seam. And technically it's in two pieces.

I'd like to prolong the life of this book, and know that I need to cover it in order to do so. I have my own ideas about what to do, but I was wondering if anyone with a bit more experience with this kind of thing could make any suggestions.

  • Are late (as in 2-3 days late) writing supplements allowed by Brandeis University?

I've recently applied to Brandeis University. I got in everything on time, except for one thing: the writing supplement. I had forgotten to submit it, and did so the day after the deadline.

Is this a problem? I was told by my guidance counselor that colleges will still take supplements a few days after the deadline as long as the common app. (and in my case everything else) was submitted on time. If this is the case, I have nothing to worry about.

But is this actually the case? If my supplement wasn't delivered by the deadline, does that mean Brandeis will not look at my application?

I've worked very hard to build a good application, get good grades, and the like to try and get into Brandeis, one of my top schools. It is therefore very important to me that I at least get the applications in and looked at.

So again: will Brandeis still look at my application, considering that everything was sent in on time except for the writing supplement, which was sent in 2-3 days later?

  • I'm stuck between four colleges. Your thoughts?

    This isn't going to be about which college is best for me. I want YOUR opinion on the following schools, how good/bad you think they are, what you like/don't like about them, all that good stuff. It's all about you. I'd especially like to hear from people who go to these schools;

    American University

    University of Vermont (Burlington)

    University of Massachusetts (Amherst)

    Brandeis University

Tell me about your experiences with these colleges, or your opinions if you have no experience. Don't ask me, "Well what do you want to do?" If you know that, I won't get the results I'm looking for.

  • What is your favorite country in the world today, and why?

Remember, that's THE WORLD TODAY. If you say "Confederate States of America," "Deutsche Demokretische Republik," or "Pax Romana," you are WRONG; these countries no longer exist.

Also, answering the "why?" part of the question is vital. Please don't give me some childish answer like, "Amerika, bcuz we are teh most free!" or "Germany, cuz nazis r so kewl!" or "Canada, justin bieber from their and i loves him!". I'd like to hear some legitimate points as to why the country you pick is your most favorite.

Also please please please avoid trashing other countries. Please. I know this is the internet, but, c'mon! Be civilized fer Chris'sake!

I look forward to hearing what you guys 'n gals have to say.

  • Is there anyone on Yahoo Answers that knows any Bayerisch?

I'll be going to Weilheim in Oberbayern, a small city in Bavaria, as a part of my school's German Exchange Program. I've got a ?decent? ?terrible? ?pretty good? handle on the German language itself, but I don't know anything in Bayerisch.

I don't expect to be actually learning the language, but if there is anyone out there that knows Bayerisch, or lives in Bavaria and has heard the language, would you mind just giving me a few key phrases or pronunciations?

I'd rather not go in as just another "ignorant American," so just a few Bayerisch phrases would be nice.

Thank you for all your help!

  • Who will be the next great world power?

There was Egypt. There was Rome. The Mongols too. The British and French also.

These are among the nations that have been the dominant world power at some point in History. At present, for better or for worse, the United States holds that position.

But all great powers eventually fall. My question is, who do you think will be the next great world power, and why?

  • Who is the best person you have ever known/met, and why are they the best?

I just thought that there are so many good people in the world, and we never hear about them.

Kim Jong Il and Vachel Havel died within a week of each other, and we all know which one people were more concerned with.

Anywho, let us know about someone who has been very good to you, or has profoundly changed your life for the better. It can be a stranger who preformed a random act of kindness who you will never see again, or someone you have known for years.

The only guideline is that you have to have actually met and interacted with this person, even if only for a moment. That's the question; who is the best person you have ever known/met, and why are they the best?

Please answer, so we can recognize these amazing people! Also, you don't have to mention a name if you don't want to, but at least describe this person's relationship to you and what it is they did/do.
