  • Mayor Bloomberg and soda law?

    Hello,

    I am a Japanese.

I am not an expert about U.S. politics.

Please let me ask a question about politics and political philosophy.

As my memory serves, there are two kind of American citizens:

conservatives who believe freedom is supreme and hate governmental interference, and

liberals who believe government should intervene private lives to realize better welfare of the people.

As far as I understand, there is a fierce battle between liberals and conservatives under current presidential campaign. One of the influential conservative groups is the "Tea Party."

I recently came to know that Mr. Bloomberg, Mayor of New York city, attempts to introduce a law which bans to sell soda in large cups.

I have once visited New York city and I understand his intention since there are so many obese people.

However it is clear that the law is an intervention to economics. I wonder whether some conservatives protest against him and form a kind of "SODA PARTY" in order to maintain rights to sell and drink soda in large cups. Japanese TV stations report about the law however report little about the response to the law.

If it were a case in Japan, most of the people would accept the law. There are few "conservatives" (in U.S. sense) in Japan. I would like to know how U.S. people handle their "principles" in such cases.

Every serious comment is welcomed. No twisted jokes please.
