  • Where does the Bureau of Labor get information from?

I have a general idea of how surveys are conducted but for my economics project I need a reliable source that tells me where and how the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics gets its information. Specifically relating to hourly wage earned by americans in the past five years.

I have searched online but I am not finding anything. Any help please?

  • How do you create pictures like this?

Hello. I came across a lot of pictures like this on pinterest (http://pinterest.com/pin/151644712424807135/), with the main colors on the side. Its kind of deconstructed. So two questions,

    1) where did this idea originate? I think I have seen it before and not associated with that blog (unique seeds or whatever)

    2) how do I do this on Gimp? How do I create color blocks...erg. sigh. Maybe its a complicated question. How do I paste multiple images onto one background, to create one picture?

  • Help with High Speed Sync Flash? (Lumopro 160)?

I bought my first external flash and have been happy with it until now. My goal was always to do low key photography but only NOW have i learned about high speed sync flash.

I dont even understand the concept entirely. Can someone put it in laymans terms?

Also, is there anyway to do low key photography with my flash or no? Should I invest in another flash? Do I have to buy an expensive flash to achieve low key results?

    (I have a nikon d3000.)

    Thanks in advance...

  • sb600 good for portraits? (I have d3000)?

I did some research on flashes a few months ago and I remember reading a lot of things saying that the sb 600 was not compatible with a nikon d3000 as an off camera flash. It lacked some kind of cell thing.. (I want to use a trigger I think). But now that I have some money I am reading that the sb600 is totally fine. I want to do portraits.

I dont know. I really want to buy a flash...and a stand as well. I'm sick of not taking good pictures :(

So would it work for me? Thankyou.

  • Which paring knife should a beginner get?

I have been looking at paring knives because I want to start learning knife skills. I was going to get a shun but then I realized it is 100 dollars. So my question is does it really matter how expensive it is? Can I get a 20 dollar knife to start out with? I want to do fluting and similar things. Also, does the length matter? Like the Wusthof Classic Fluting knife is 2 3/4 in. and the sun paring knives are 3 1/2 or 4 in. So which length is good to start with? That is my dilemna. Like what would I use professionally in a kitchen? Would it matter?

    Ok thank you!

  • How small do lenses get? (ex- 50mm 1.8)?

My nikon AF 50mm 1.8 is pretty small for a lens (http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/5018daf.htm). Its the smallest lens Ive ever seen, but I'm new to photography.

So my question is - how many other small lenses are out there? For Nikon or Canon. I think its nice to have things small and compact. I know that the more important aspect is image quality, etc but right now Im just curious about size.

oh and btw, no lens converters!!!

    thanks,

  • Nikon D3000 does not have in-camera AF motor?

I have come to realize this and it stinks. It means that my camera is only compatible with AF-S lenses.

So my question is, what camera, in similar price range to d3000, has a built in AF motor? And do you think I should switch cameras? What lens types is the d3100 compatible with? Ive heard it is an all-around good camera (and yes I am still a newbie).

    thanks....

  • Best knife for Amateur Chef (who wants to be an expert chef!)?

Hello. After doing some research I have come to the conclusion that 1) A good chef's knife will cost me ~$150 and 2)Shun knives are the best

BUT I am on a budget, so I saw that the victorinox knives are cheaper, but still good quality. (I saw a victorinox chef's knife for ~$40. )

Are there any other brands I should consider before getting the victorinox? It is the only budget friendly [and good quality] brand I came across. What is your opinion of them?

    K thanks!

My question is...when I want to sync more music to my ipod (i obviously get it on my itunes library), how do I sync the new music with all of my old music from my extternal hard drive? There should be a way to change the path of where the ipod syncs to. or something.

You see I just got a new computer so I had to store all my old music on a hard drive. But I like not having too may files on my comp. So im trying to keep everything stored and organized via external hard drives...

  • Help please? Friend might have Kidney Infection?

Hello. I really need suggestions right now. My friend has been saying for the past few days that he thinks he has a kidney infection because his urine smells funny. He says he has had them before (but not too often). And today he is vomiting. He cant hold anything down. He can barely walk anywhere. Im not sure if he has a fever because I cannot get to his house right now.

Anyway. He has been drinking cranberry juice but the type he bought had sugar in it (bad!). So now I dont know what to do. Is there a type of tea he should drink? Can you suggest some type of home remedy that can be bought at walmart (he is really close to one)

I called a pharmacist at walmart and he said that it could be a kidney stone. And to drink lots of water.

Should he go straight to the doc? I really dont know....

any input is SO appreciated. ok thanks.

  • Which flash should I get? SB400 or 600?

I know the obvious answer is the 600. But can you tell me why? someone said something to the effect of "the 400 is manual control only''. I dont have any experience with flashes so can you put this in laymans terms?

The reason im asking is because the 400 is so much cheaper.

After a lot a searching i am sure that i want a speedlight for portraits. I have a nikon d3000. I will want to mount it on a stand as well (extra info).

Ok thanks! I am so eager to get this started..

  • Setting Up Makeshift Portrait Studio - Need Suggestions?

So im thinking, two big black sheets, one worklight (75 watt oval hanging kind that are ~15 at walmart), one umbrella (a good quality one from adorama?), and a reflector (either buy or use makeshift - mirror, car sun thing, etc)

So, do you think this will work? Im pretty sure those lights can be used indoors. My questiosn lies mainly with the umbrella. On adorama, they have umbrellas from $5 to $11,000 (haha srsly). They seem to come either silver, gold, or white on the inside. Im thinkign of getting ~ 35$ white one. ANY INPUT HERE IS NEEDED thankyou.

I know this is lame, but who cares? im experimenting.

  • Beach Photography with a manual focus lens?

I am going to get a 50mm 1.8 nikkor lens for portraits (but i figure i could use it for other things). The manual focus is 100 bucks cheaper than the AF-S.

So my question is, can you capture pictures of waves with manual focus? Does it just take practice? It seems somewhat difficult...

The reason i want a low light lens for the beach is for sunset/sunrise.

What lens is best for beach photography? I am jsut talking about general pictures taken from the shore (not like from inside of a wave).

    btw i have a nikon d3000

  • best portrait/low light lens Nikon D3000?

Ok so im almost ready to buy the 35mm 1.8 nikkor lens. I have heard good things about it. It is going to be my first lens other than the standard that came with my d3000.

I would just like to make sure that im making the right choice. I will be taking portrait photos in my room. Im not sure if a low light lens is really necessary for that but i have always wanted one for other situations. Im trying to combine my two needs.

It would be cool to get a zoom lens as well....

i dont want to spend over 400 dollars, though.

    any input is appreciated!

  • More Lighting Questions for Portraits?

The type of portraits I want to take are going to be emotive, shadowy ones. So im not sure if I will need a soft box or an umbrella. I think soft boxes are cooler, personally.

I cant seem to fin a light kit for cheaper than this http://www.tubetape.net/servlet/the-722/220v-MXLIG...

    It seems like ok quality....

Oh, also, 220v is volts, but how does that relate to the amount of watts that a light has? Are volts the amount of power it uses, and watts the amount it emits?

Also, are the monolights/photog lights universal? As in, if I had different brands of an umbrella/softbox and light could I still attach them? If not, that would be frustrating.

    thanks!
