  • What forms do I need to petition a change for a nonimmigrant to resident alien ?

My grandmother (85yrs old) is currently staying with us in the US on a Non-immigrant visa. Her I-94 card expires on the 10th of February 2011. We would like to change her status to a resident alien (Green card) so she can stay until October when my father retires from work and will take her back to her country and provide care for her there.

If we petition to extend her non-immigrant visa (form I-539) another 6 months, that will only be until August which is two months too soon.

The best thing to do in our position is to apply for a green card. Is Form I-130 the correct form to fill out in our case?

I ask this because the FAQs for from I-130 tell me this:

Q: Can my relative wait in the United States until becoming a permanent resident?

A: No. If your relative is outside the United States, filing an I-130 does not allow your relative to live or work in the United States. An I-130 petition only establishes your relationship with your relative. Your relative should wait outside the United States to immigrate legally. If your husband or wife, unmarried child under 21 years, or parent is already in the United States after having entered legally, they can apply to adjust their status to permanent resident at the same time you file their I-130 petition.

My grandmother is already in the US with us since August. Given her age, she cannot travel extensively let alone by herself in order to satisfy the I-130 requirement of the relative being outside the US until the application is approved.

    -----

Now you know our situation, what form is appropriate for us in order for her to get a green card while in the US?

    Thank you for your time.

  • How to travel with US/EU citizenship for longer than 90 days?

I hold dual citizenship and plan on being in the EU for more than 90 days. Will there be any problems when I leave the US with my US passport, entering the EU with my EU passport, staying 120+ days, leaving with my EU passport to the US and entering the US with my US passport?

If you were a border officer in the EU, you would see that I am trying to go the US with my EU passport and without any visas which EU citizens are required to have when they go to the US. If I try to show my US passport in the EU, then they will see that I have stayed longer than the 90 day visa-free limit.

I also read that if I show both passports at once, I might be subjected to questioning with possible confiscation of my passport.

How should I handle prolonged stays with dual citizenship? I know how to handle the situation if I stay under 90 days, but I do not know what to do when I say for 90+ days.

    Thank you for your time.

    Peace,

    -J

p.s. My EU passport is a Polish passport.

  • Where do I find the WEP Network Key on a mac?

My family is using a MacBook Pro with an Airport Express router. Unfortunately, they have monopolized the internet connection; I can connect to the Internet if I use their MacBook. I have a laptop PC and would like to use the wi-fi connection. However, the network is secure and my PC asks for the network key ID and a password.

Where can I find the WEP (WPA) key?

  • What kind of profession takes advantage of dual-citizenship?

    Hello,

I have been recently given dual citizenship (US and Poland / EU). I can legally work in the EU and, of course, in the US. I am two years out of college and am looking for my vocation. It would be stupid to put my Polish / EU citizenship in my "back pocket" and never use it. The world is getting smaller, the global economy is solidifying, and large corporations are getting undeserved castigation.

I know that I have to take advantage of my dual citizenship. But what kind of professions OR even business ideas will allow me to use it? Buying and Selling in the US and EU?

    Thank you kindly,

  • Why do concert performers walk off and back on the stage at the end?

    Greetings to all,

The concert ends and the pianist or violinist, etc. of the concerto receives the applause, bows, and then walks of the stage with a mission. Then comes back onto the stage and receives more applause, then again, walks off the stage. This repeats 3 times or so.

    Why?

Isn't it humble to receive one round of applause and leave for good? I feel that to receive 2 or 3 rounds of applause is elitist and borderline arrogant. But that's just my opinion ;-0

  • Why dress up for interviews if employers know you are dressing up?

    Allow me to explain.

Say that I am an employer and you are the potential hire. You are culturally indoctrinated to dress up conservatively (do a simple search and you will find thousands of websites telling you how to dress up for interviews.

But I, the employer, am not stupid. I read these articles and fashion tips too.

    So....

I know that you know that I know you are dressing up for the interview. You have been told that I look at you and I "would" think that you "care" about the company, etc. Because you are wearing a navy or black or charcoal grey suit (or dress) with a white dress shirt and simple tie.

This being said: shouldn't we throw out the "importance" of looking nice because it is irrelevant due to the line of logic in the above paragraph?

    Thanks

  • Why are movie peasants portrayed as dirty, uncivilized creatures?

What grounds do contemporaries have to portray peasants are unkept and dirty? Take a look at movies (even the blockbusters) that have peasants in them, and tell me why are the peasants living with mud on their faces and holes in their clothing?

How are we, in the 21st century, any different from them? Except for technological advancements the human will to be clean and comfortable is still unchanged. Or is it?

If you were poor and could not afford many clothes, wouldn't you want to take very good care of the few articles that you have? As soon as a hole occurs, wouldn't it be patched, stitched, or darned?

And how many of you leave dirt on your face?

It's a shame that fact is often left out and fiction takes over.

    Your thoughts?

  • Is Scotch cheaper in Scotland?

Scotch, especially the single-malts, are very good. But in the US they come with a price. Is it safe to say that the closer we are to the source, the less expensive it will be? (Furthermore, to ship a container full of Scotch bottles to the US and then have the importer and distributor add their share, would be more expensive than a Scot buying a single malt locally).

Does that logic make sense? Is it a realization?

Thank you and Merry Christmas to all.

  • What do I have to do to get into law school with a 3.13 GPA?

Besides a miracle and a near-perfect LSAT score, what other application-boosting activities, experiences, etc. should I consider doing to be at least considered for admission to a law school?

I am interested in Wisconsin-Madison (my state; therefore in-state tuition ~$14k /yr) with Marquette U. in a distant second (my alma matter but the law school is about $32k /yr). I have these two schools in mind because we have to be reasonable. Even with a perfect LSAT score and oodles of extracurricular activities and accomplishments, I wouldn't even be considered to schools like Yale, NYU, Harvard, Cornell, Georgetown, etc. (nor could I afford them).

    Thank you,

    -Unemployed

p.s. A little additional info: I graduated from Marquette in the spring of 2008 with a final 3.13 GPA and 3.34 in my major (English). I am also TESL certified (though have yet to go abroad to teach). I never had an internship. I am white and a man. ...My chances get slimmer with each word in this paragraph!

  • Which area of law study will be in the greatest demand?

There are many areas of study in law schools. But how many more marriage, divorce, criminal lawyers are needed in the US? Therefore, I ask what area of law is not necessarily the most popular, but will have the greatest demand?

Take a look at the Yellowpages. There are pages upon pages of court lawyers.

Should I pursue law study, I do not want to fall into an area which is "cliche" (for a lack of a better word).

Or is it that these areas (marriage, divorce, criminal) are in the greatest demand?

    Thank you much.

  • Why must military personnel be clean-shaven?

I've been looking at some photographs of civil war-era soldiers and I've noticed that many of them sported some kind of facial hair. I've also noticed that many senior officers of WWI had mustaches or beards or sideburns.

When did the US govt institute that soldiers must be clean-shaven? And why?

    Thank you.

  • Is titanium white the most reflective acrylic paint?

From what I understand titanium dioxide reflects 97% of light and titanium dioxide is the primary pigment used in titanium white paints.

However, is there a white which is whiter and brighter? Say 98% reflective?

I ask because I cannot seem to get the whites to be extremely bright. I see some paintings in the museums and the whites are incredibly bright. But when I try to use the "brightest" white ( titanium white) it comes out as murky and diluted.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • Where can I get the handbooks / manuals from the Navy OCS?

    Hello all.

I am researching my career options as I have been out of college for 8 months. I graduated from Marquette University with a B.A in English. I do not have much on my resume and finding a job, in this economy, is a real pain. (I couldn't even get a job as a cashier at a photo studio; a studio that does not require a degree or photography experience--of which I have both).

Therefore I want to research what I could possibly due with my life. One option (I will avoid explaining the other four) is to sign myself to the Navy and go through OCS in Newport, RI.

Where can I find reading material (either about the schedule, requirements, and life in OCS or the actual manuals / books used in OCS)? I found "The Naval Officer's Guide Eleventh Edition" and the "Officer Candidate, 7th edition" on Amazon.com.

Is that relevant to Navy OCS?

Furthermore, where could I get information on proper drill form? I've watched the videos on Youtube of the rifle comp, and I can say that it looks quite difficult.

The way I see it, is the more I know, the better my decision will be if I choose to pursue a career in the US Navy.

Thank you all for your time, wisdom, and patience.

  • Will every beginning rider have an accident?

I have been reading many responses in forums and this website and see that the common response is that "Yes, every beginning motorcyclist will get into an accident."

How true is that statement? Or is this just a generalization? For the riders reading this, did you get into any kind of accident when you first began?

What are the common mistakes made?

Lastly, isn't it possible to ride safely, smartly, and within reason so as to avoid an accident? By this I mean when someone states that a beginner will get into an accident, is it because the beginner tries to do too much (e.g. too much throttle) or is unaccustomed to riding?

I ask these questions because I would like to start riding. I have been told time and time again to buy a used motorcycle. I can understand the reasoning behind this. However, my philosophy is "buying a used machine is buying someone's problems." This is highly applicable for fine-tuned (and short-lived) motorcycles. I would like to buy new but if the maxim is true that EVERY beginner will have an accident, then I'll just stick to riding a car. There is no sense of damaging a work of art if it is unavoidable.

    Peace,

p.s. I am 6'2" 220lbs, am I too big for a 250cc? Should I start with a 600cc? I love the Honda V-twins: VTR1000 Superhawk and RC51 and as well as the CBR family. Furthermore, I have no need for endangering my life by trying to go too fast. I simply enjoy the open-aired feeling but dislike Harleys and cruisers in general.

p.p.s I deeply applogize for the long post. I hope you understand. Once again, thank you very much for your time and knowledge.
