  • Is it legal for an employer to ban employee purses or handbags from the premises?

My wife works at Red Lobster as a bartender, and was recently told in a store meeting that females were no longer allowed to bring purses or handbags to work because the designated are for them had become too cluttered and unsightly. They were told "not to worry, because any feminine hygiene products they may need could be obtained from a manager upon request." I can understand the clutter issue, but get a shelf or cabinet to hide them from view. My main concern is the huge invasion of personal privacy and personal embarrassment by having to disclose to a manager when her time of the month is. Plus, many of the managers happen to be male, although the general manager is a female (who is allowed to bring her purse in and put it in her office). I see this as borderline sexual discrimination, since the males don't have to ask the manager for anything that personal, or borderline sexual harassment because of the embarrassment or humiliation this may cause. Anybody ever had to deal with anything like this? I have checked everything and I can find nothing like this anywhere!
