  • Good music publishers?

I'm wondering how people rate different publishers.

Personally, I go for Henle Verlag or Barenreiter with Urtext and find the worst are the International Music Co. and Kalmus editions

How would you rank different music publishers, including publishers such as listed above, and others like Peters, Schirmer, Sikorski, Breitkopf and Hartel and Boosey and Hawkes?

What are some other good publishers?

  • What part does a guest artist usually play in a quintet?

If there is an existing string quartet, and a guest artist is invited for a string quintet (e.g. another violist or cellist), does the guest artist usually play the 1st or 2nd part?

What is the generally accepted procedure here?

  • Music that is recognisable when the piece is sounded out with "words"?

What classical pieces, have reached the stage where they're so well known, that I can just type out a vague series of words, imitating the sound of the piece.

    The most obvious is:

    DUN DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUUN

which I'm sure you will all recognize.

What other pieces have reached this stage?

  • What is the orchestration for the Kabalevsky Cello Concerto No. 2?

Does somebody know the exact orchestration for this cello concerto? I'm aware that there is some extra percussion and saxophone in the orchestra, but does anybody know the number of brass/woodwind that are required?

  • i need some youtube videos of 'nauseating' classical musicians?

what i'm talking about by nauseating, is not just their playing (it's up to you whether you think they are good or not, all a matter of opinion), but about extreme body movements or facial expressions

so far, my top three are:

    lang lang - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubVVSWHkxs8

    yo yo ma - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iudtvUpu3f4

    keith jarrett - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPqK1JJOFxw

(yes i'm aware that keith jarrett isn't really a classical musician)

do you know any other videos of performers that are just over the top with their body movements?

or do you have better videos of any of the above listed people with their actions?

i can't find a good short clip of yundi li and his chopin drunk/dreamy expression

  • Need help identifying this piano piece?

This is a piece that I've heard once in a practice room, and I can't find the title of the piece. I understand it's difficult to read "typed out music", but here goes:

^ signifies its one octave higher

    * signifies its an octave (ie A with A^)

    A# A#^ B* C* C# C#^ D#* C#* F# F#^ G#* A* A# A#^ B* A#*

    I___________Vb____________vi___________Ic

The RH melody notes are all of equal time value

The LH accompaniment is in a Chopin like style, and I've provided the chords

The piece is in F# major

I thought that the piece was quite Chopin-esque but haven't found any preludes/etudes that correspond to it.

For some reason its replacing the last chord with "..."

the chord for the last 4 notes is "Ic"

  • What is the difference between Db major and C# major?

I'm not looking for differences in character or mood. I'm looking for technical differences, especially with regard to string/woodwind instruments where pitch can be changed subtly, not from the perspective of the piano where the two keys are identical. For example, a C# in D major has a tendency to be sharper than say a C# in A major.

Does this have to temperament and tuning?

  • What do you think of these people?

Here's a question I want to ask you fellow classical music lovers.

    What do you think of:

    1. Andre Rieu

    2. Vanessa Mae

    3. Bond

I've heard all three of these being referred to as classical musicians, and personally I find that very irritating. So do you think that they are classical musicians, and are they promoting classical or dragging it through the mud, or just destroying it?

Does anyone know some good quality sites that talk about the physics involved when flying paper planes? I'm more focused on the physics aspects not just good flying designs. Thanks in advance.
