How do you time 45 minutes given the following tools?
You've got two ropes, of unequal lengths. You also have a box of
matches. If you set either one of the ropes on fire at one end, it
will take one hour for it to burn up completely (all the way to the
other end). However, the rate at which the rope burns is not constant
(example, first half burns in 5 minutes, and the second half, in 55).
You don't know the burn rate as a function of position.
