  • I'm wondering if I should consider letting a flat above a retail premise on High Street?

I'll be arriving for a permanent work position in Bromley at the first of the year. I have been checking out the current options for a flat-either 1 bedroom or studio in the Bromley vicinity-Bromley, Beckenham, or Chislehurst, Bickley. I have seen some listings for flats above retail premises on high street-the pictures look good, but would you recommend this arrangement? I am middle age female-will be living alone. When I was in SE London before, it seemed like High Street shops close down after about 5pm--wouldn't want to feel afraid to be walking home in the evening. And, are there insect problems if it's over or near a restaurant? (there would be where I live now)

    All Advice is appreciated!

  • Shall I let a flat in Orpington?

I'm relocating for a job with Bromley, and thought I would be working in Bromley but I have been advised that I'll actually be working in Orpington.

I'm wondering if I should find a flat there, also? How is it to live there? Is anyone familiar with a place called "The Approach" which seems to be located near the Orpington Rail station. (I found that on a letting site)

I am a mid-age female and need to conserve funds for a while, but also want to be reasonably comfortable in a safe area. Is that too much to ask?

I would also consider commuting within a 30minute range and would welcome any suggestions. I won't have a car, will rely on the train and bus.

  • Does it snow in the Southern part of England?

I understand that it doesn't get so cold in the London area that it snows enough to stay on the ground. However, I've looked at some pictures of some towns in SW London and Kent, and there is definitely snow on the ground.

  • Tell me about the London Borough of Bromley. How is it as a place to live and work there?

I've been offered a job in Bromley and will be relocating from the US. Two years ago, I lived in Charlton and worked in Woolwich, so I kinda know the SE area and know pretty much where NOT to live. I just don't know too much about this location.

I've been doing my research of the area, cost of flats and all that. I don't want to have to commute more than 30minutes to get to work which will be at the Bromley Civic Centre. I've seen some pictures of nice looking flats, but wonder about the areas.

I will be alone, mature-aged female, won't be driving, but like to be able to get out and about and feel reasonably safe. (Hey, I'm from So. Florida - it's all in the perspective)

If I get a place close to the Civic Centre, everything I need will be close by, including the shops, trains, buses, and work.

Beckenham is looking like a 2nd possiblility--how is that?

Or do I go more south to Chislehurst?

Or further west to Hayes, West Wickham?

Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated.

  • Should I buy a new laptop in the USA before I move, or in the UK after I arrive?

My current laptop feels like it weighs 100lbs and I am thinking about getting one of the newer, lightweights (even though mine works fine for what I need). I know there is a difference with the electric, but I used a converter before with no problems. I'm just wondering on which side of the pond I will find the best deal.

  • I will be moving to SE London in a few months, will I be able to find a flat that will allow a small dog? ?

I know everyone must say their dog is housebroken and quiet, and then move in with Cujo--and that makes it hard for responsible dog owners to rent a place. I will be working in Bromley, and have been checking the letting sites to see what I can expect to pay and what that gives me for location and space. Not many list that dogs are allowed--is that something I may be able to negotiate and they just don't list it to discourage the Cujo owners?

I'm getting worried. I'm aware that there are regulations about bringing dogs in to the UK, I can deal with that. I'm just concerned about finding a decent place to live and to be able to eventually bring my pug over, too. I plan to leave her with family until I'm settled and then bring her later.

    Any advice for me?
