I'm a husband and father, biker and gamer, metalhead... oh yeah, and a science education prof who is currently studying some more physics.

  • Would you be so kind as to comment on this gaming computer build?

One of my desktops at home has died, so I'm buying it a whole new set of internals. I already have hard drives and DVD drives and a case, but pretty much everything else internally will be replaced. As part of the upgrade I'm adding a 256 GB SSD drive for the OS and most-used apps.

    Here's the current list:

Antec High Current Gamer 520W PS

    Asus P8Z77-M PRO Motherboard

    Intel Core i5 3450 CPU

    Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 RAM

    Gainward GTX570 1280M DDR5 video card

Corsair Force Series 3 240GB SSD

Obviously I'm working to a budget, but given Australian prices are much different from US ones it doesn't make sense to outline the details on that. The thing is, if you suggest a replacement, make it one in a similar budget bracket wherever you are. Sure, I'd *love* to have two UltraMega X270billion video cards in SLI!! (joke example), but that would cost many times what's in the budget.

Thanks heaps for any help and suggestions.

  • cd ~/ and cd ./ commands (bash)?

Thought I knew about the cd (change directory) command in the Linux terminal. cd [directory] to change to a particular directory, cd . to change to the previous directory, cd .. to change to the home directory.

But someone asked about the two in the heading, cd ~/ and cd ./

Can't find anything on the net. Any clues?

  • Integration by parts - how do I do this challenging question?

Struggling a bit with this question:

"Let f be a function whose anti-derivative cannot be expressed in terms of elementary functions.

    Define a function g by

    g(x) = ∫ (0-x) f(u) du (that is, the integral is a definite integral from 0 to x of f(u) with respect to u)

Evaluate the definite integral ∫ (0-α) g(x), where α > 0, expressing your answer in terms of f or g where possible. Show all working."

I believe it's an integration by parts question, but combining the parts I get ∫ (0-α) g(x) dx = ∫ (0-α) ∫ (0-x) f(u) du dx, and that kinda has only one function, not a function and the derivative of another function...

  • Silent Marantz PM63 integrated stereo amplifier?

    Hi All

Just bought a Marantz PM63 integrated stereo amplifier on eBay. The seller said it was working when sent, and seems genuine, and I have no reason to disbelieve him.

When I connected the Linear Design speakers (which have been tested and are known to be good) to it, I could get no sound at all. I also connected another working speaker and could get no sound.

I've tried input from an iPhone (which I know can be dodgy for the wrong impedance and low power), a Macbook Pro and a DVD player (just using an audio CD and the audio RCA cables).

When the amp is switched on all the lights come on, and a couple of seconds later the main power relay clicks. I checked the main fuse anyway and it's fine.

    It's a conundrum - any ideas?

  • Which singer will Anthrax have for the Big Four show?

Pretty self-explanatory: Anthrax is playing a show with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer, that will be simulcast to theatres all around the world. I want to know whether John Bush or Joey Belladonna will be the singer with Anthrax - both have sung with the band in the last couple of years.

PS Yahoo! Answers *really* needs a 'metal' category!
