Due to my bad childhood I am currently suffering from social shyness and find it difficult to make friends. I know where I can go to find possible friends but what I don't know is how do you make that first contact and break the ice. Now it could be at school/college, school prom, pub/club, a gig etc and you see someone you like, how do you make that first contact and break the ice? Do you approach them or wait until they approach you? If they are in a group of friends do you wait until they are alone before approaching them or if not how do you break into their circle of friends? Do you accidently bump into them or spill their drink just to break the ice? Or do you pretend that you seen them somewhere else before? Do you ever worry about coming across as borning or being rejected, or not knowing what to say next? Do you worry that they may get the wrong end of the stick and think that you're coming onto them?

Does anyone have any good tips in breaking the ice?
