  • Small Calor gas bottles (blue/green): What should I do with them?

We've just moved into a house and found 2 calor gas bottles in the shed.

They're not the ones I've seen before (these are short, fat ones). One is green. One is blue.

    See picture:

They're empty and we don't want them - how should we get rid of them?

    Thanks

  • Why does my car squeal when I press the clutch down?

When I push the clutch peddle down to change gear, the car squeals fairly loudly. It does this when it's moving and when stationary.

There's a hint of a squeal in neutral too (but not as loud)

    It's an 1998 Peugeot 306 that's done around 89000

What could it be and how long have I got before it explodes?! I can't get to the garage for 2 weeks because work is being **** about time off.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Translators - what to do: unmotivating, unskilled translation tutor and a project due for him/her!?

    Hi all.

I'm in my final year of uni of a languages degree. I have a 4000 word translation project to do and my supervisor is getting me down.

Firstly, he/she is not a translator. Despite being skilled in the foreign language, his/her suggested translations are rather stilted, too literal and don't flow like an original piece of English. My other tutor for another language, who also works as a professional translator, is much more for the translation of ideas/concepts/information/feeling on the reader rather than finding a word for word equivalent for every word. Whilst I understand the question of "balance" comes into translation - the non-translator tutor produces some really dodgy sounding English - all for the sake of translating every word "faithfully".

Secondly, his/her lectures were more a "let's have a go a random texts" than actually learning about translation. I've learned nothing from him/her.

And finally, my current problem is I'm doing an extended translation for this lecturer. He/She's expecting me to produce a literal piece, without moving punctuation and translating word for word. Trying to make my text read like "proper" English results in being advised that it's not exactly the translation for the words used in the ST. Since this is a newspaper article,I doubt a newspaper would publish stilted, frenchly-phrased articles, just for the sake of "faithfulness"....

Half rant, half request for help from translators. What is your view of a non-translator teaching translation? Do you prefer literal, stilted translations?

I feel like I'm caught in a battle between producing a good piece of writing and literal nonsense covered in footnotes just to please him/her. He/she might be the one marking it - but surely they should be good at translation themelves!
