I'm happy and life is good. I like being loved. My favorite color is green. What more do you need to know? "We read to know that we are not alone." ~ CS Lewis

  • What do you do at an informal teacher memorial?

A beloved teacher recently passed, and their students (me included) are holding an informal memorial gathering outside our school. I'm planning to bring pictures, have a song or two, get people to talk about why they loved the teacher. What else can I do to make this night meaningful for everyone who comes out?

  • NYU or GWU for a language major?

I am currently deciding between attending New York University (Paris Campus, the first year) or George Washington University to pursue an interpretation career. My dream was to live in Washington D.C., but I'm worried now that I've heard a lot of negative things about GWU. Which, in your opinion, would be better? What are the pros and cons of each? Any advice appreciated.

  • Could this be a side effect of an eating disorder?

Today, I got out of bed and immediately fell down. I couldn't move my leg at all and had to just lie there, like an idiot, for a couple minutes before dragging myself back to bed. In a few moments, I was able to stand up and move, but the incident scared me. Does anyone have any idea if this could be eating disorder-related? It's the only possible cause I can think of, but I can't find anything online about it. And if so, what is happening to me?

  • Is this considered bulimia?

Over the past year I've had some issues. Lately, I purge almost everyday. And if I don't, it's because I haven't eaten that day. I'm facing pretty much all of the typical bulimia symptoms. However, I don't really binge like a typical bulimic. They eat thousands of calories in one sitting, whereas I just eat until I feel like I've had too much and can't handle it -- then purge. For me, too much is often two or three hundred calories. My question is: if I don't binge, is it still possible for me to have an eating disorder?

The reason I'm asking, by the way, is because it's been suggested that I see someone about this, but I don't want to go to a bulimia specialist if that isn't what I'm dealing with.

  • How much should this Europe trip cost?

I want to backpack through Greece, Italy, France, and Spain next summer for at least 5 weeks on a tight budget. Staying at hostels, buying most of my food from markets, eating only 2 meals a day, etc. At minimum and including flight expenses, how much do you think this would cost (giving your best rough estimate)?

  • Where Did Boss Tweed's Money Go?

Boss Tweed allegedly stole millions from the state of New York during the days of Tammany Hall. But I don't understand--where did the money go? Did he have a secret account loaded or something? Does anyone know?

  • What organelles does the Natural Killer cell have?

I've been trying to do research on the Natural Killer cell for school. I have to make a model of it for school, but I don't know where to begin. I know it has different receptors, a nucleus, perforin and granzymes, a cell membrane, and lysosomes. Can anyone give me more detail? Any other organelles, or what the ones I mentioned look like, or how they function. I really am trying, but I need some help.

  • How high can I potentially jump in my class rank in 2 years?

I'm going into junior year, and I'm #36 in my class. I slacked off my first two years so my GPA is not as high as it should be. Also, over the next 2 years I'll be taking upwards of 8 AP classes. Is it possible for me to make the top 10? I mean, I know the answer will be an educated guess, but what do you think? My dream is #2 in the class, but even I think that's far-fetched.

What sort of rank increase do you think would be possible considering I wasted the first 2 years of high school?

  • What are my chances of getting into these schools?

If I do well on the SAT and ACT, that is. I have a current unweighted GPA of 4.9. I'm taking all honors courses (aside from drama) and one AP course. I also took an AP course last year, and will take four more next year. I'm president of my school's humanitarian club and a member of Academic Team. Next year, I'm also joining Spanish club and history club.

What are my chances of getting into any of these schools:

    Stanford University

    Georgetown University

    University of Maryland

    Amherst University

    Ohio State University

Stanford and Georgetown are my top choices by a long shot, but I have a feeling they're out of my league.

What else do I need to improve my chances?

What SAT score would be needed?

  • What describes the Civil War Era in literature?

I'm doing a timeline of literary movements given to me by my teacher but I don't understand what she means by the Civil War Era literary movement. I'm taking a wild guess that it's during the Cvil War. That's all I know. I need to know what characteristics defined this era and the name of one writer from this period. Any help?

  • How do you handle extreme stress?

I need some new ideas for handling stress. I have so much homework, and I need to get my GPA up so that I can be in the top 5%, and I don't have room for all the classes I need to graduate, and all my clubs are starting to add up as far as time goes (but of course I need to join more for college applications), and I'm scared I won't get into a good enough college when the time comes, and I have to get a job as soon as possible.

The stress has been so much for me that I'm now on suspension for losing my temper with a teacher because I couldn't retake a test. I need help. How do you all handle stress?

  • What would I need to be considered by Stanford?

The only thing I cannot possibly do is play a sport. Aside from that, what do I need to do as far as grades, extracurriculars, SAT score, etc. to even possibly make it in?

  • What sort of college should I be looking at?

I want to go to the best school I possibly can, when the time comes. At the moment, I am a sophomore, but I want to know what sort of school is possible for me. I have a 4.98 GPA, am in 2 after-school clubs (3 starting next year), and I am president of one of them. I've already passed 1 AP class, and plan to pass 6 more.

Also, I want to find a school where I can major in linguistics. That's all I want from the college.

Could I make it out of state? Is there a chance of earning a scholarship? How good of a college do you think I could get into?

  • What pokemon is this!?

It's killing me not knowing -- there's this one pokemon that Misty always carried in her arms, it looked sort of like an egg, and it had triangles decorating the egg. Anyone know its name?

  • Any book suggestions to keep me informed?

I'm looking for books about current (humanitarian) issues. Child soldiers, the water crisis, sex trafficking, slavery, malaria, genocide, etc. Maybe about how to solve them, the history of the problem, or anything relating to it. Any suggestions?

One example of what I'm looking for is A Long Way Gone by Ishmeal Beah. Also, though it doesn't strictly deal with humanitarian issues, I liked Dead Aid by Dambisa Moyo.

Oh, also, would anyone know where to find a book on how to fundraise effectively?

All suggestions will be much appreciated.Thank you, to anyone who answers.

I am in need of a few good charities to donate possibly large sums of money to. The problem I have is knowing who to trust. All I have are the websites, and anyone can start one of those. How do I know where my money is going? Should I email the charities for specifics?

    www.waterforlife.org

    www.invisiblechildren.com

    www.freetheslaves.net

  • Who are your top five most memorable characters?

Out of all the characters you've ever read about, which five stick out in your mind the most? And why do you think that is?

Also: in general, what kind of characters do you think are most memorable? The outlandish and weird, the relatable, the deeply flawed, the good at heart?

  • Anyone know anything about child soldiers?

I'm trying to find a rehabilitation center for child soldiers (particularly ones abducted by the Lord's Resistance Army) that will allow donations/sponsorships. It is very important that I find a suitable center, but the research is difficult. Can someone help me out? Would anyone mind directing me to a website that has this type of information?

Any information, even if it isn't a website or it is incredibly vague, would be a great help.
