  • Searching for pear fragrance?

Boy, did I mess up. I bought a pear fragrance that was marked down, started using it, fell in love with it, transferred it to a spray bottle, and threw away the original bottle. So, now I don't know the name of the product.

It has a true, light scent of pears. More like a green Bartlett, than an overripe Bosc. I tried ordering Pear Essential Oil from Paplin Products and that's not even close, It has no pear fragrance at all.

  • Quickbooks ddMMMyyyy formatting?

Like a ton of other bookkeepers on the net, I need to be able to format everything on Quickbooks 2010 in the ddMMMyyyy format. Today is 12 Sep 2012. Like everyone else I have adjusted the settings on my computer's control panel, but Quickbooks is not picking up that parameter. Does anyone know how to get Quickbooks 2010 to do ddMMMyyyy?

  • Where do I find meal/seat info for TACA airline?

Where do I find information about the lunch that will be served on the TACA flight from JFK to San Salvador and the "lunch" that will be served on the TACA flight from San Salvador to Lima? Where do I find information on the location of my seat on the plane? My flight JFK-San Salvador - Lima has an hour and a half layover in San Salvador. Will I be able to go outside there for a cigarette? I've searched the TACA website for meal and seat placement info with no luck.

  • En espanol - declined to "tutearme" - I feel hurt?

I sent an email in Spanish to someone I started working with recently. I am a 60 yo white North American female, and he is a late 20's Colombian. Spanish is my 4th language so I'm still learning some finer points of culture and language. The email concerned some work details and at the end I added,

"Aprecio mucho el respecto que me muestras con el usted, pero te permito tutearme, si no te parece inconveniente." He responded, "Muchas gracias por sus palabras, hasta pronto."

I've never had someone refuse to use the familiar in other languages when requested. Am I wrong in feeling very offended by this refusal?

  • Science behind leaving the oven door open?

What is the actual science behind the heat dissipation of leaving the oven door open, or not, in the summer after baking?

I thought the total amount heat to dissipate would not change by somehow being "absorbed" by the oven's insulation. In other words, if you leave the door closed, the same amount of heat will still have to dissipate through the burners and the machine itself. It will dissipate more slowly, and maybe less noticeably, to the people in the house. But, if you leave oven door open to dissipate the heat into the room more quickly, you are still getting rid of the same total amount of heat. Isn't it better to get the dissipation "over and done" quickly?

  • Office Christmas party etiquette?

I've only seen this problem mentioned a couple of times, so apparently it doesn't happen often.

I work full-time as one of 3 temporary workers in a 30 person office. I have worked there 6 months since we were each hired in June for one of the departments.

The company I work for excludes temporary workers from office parties. I didn't know about this rule until at Thanksgiving one of my co-workers asked what I was bringing for the potluck Thanksgiving. She was not aware of the policy of not inviting temporary workers to the office party. I asked a co-worker in my department why I didn't get the memo about the potluck and she explained that the 3 of us were not invited. Since the food was down the hall in the office conference room I went over anyway and helped myself to the delicious food. I went out of my way to say thank you to the HR person, and had polite conversation with others while I ate.

Now, the office Christmas party is being held off-site for pizza at a bowling alley. I asked the same woman in my department whether I would be invited. She went to our boss and urged him to consider the rudeness of not inviting the temporary workers. Invitations to us were then grudgingly issued.

I don't go where I'm not wanted, so I have no intention of attending. And, any hope of turning this temporary job into a permanent job is now gone.

    1) When is it OK to exclude people from an office party? Doesn't the name "office" mean people who work there?

    2) How often does this happen? If your office excludes some employees from the Christmas party, why?

    3) My brother says I'm being unreasonable and that the cost for the 3 temporary workers is not worth it to the company. I say it's Christmas! - goodwill towards men for pete's sake. I'm now having a hard time being motivated to do a good job. He says, get down off the cross and quit if you can't suck it up and do your job. Who's right?

  • Office Christmas Party Etiquette?

My company wants to issue invitations to approximately 30 employees to the off-site Christmas bowling party. We do not want to invite 3 temporary workers. What would be the best way to word the invitation so that employees don't discuss the party within hearing range of the uninvited temporary workers? Because the temporary workers might take it badly that they are not invited to an office party after they've worked here for 6 months, wouldn't they? Do you think the uninvited workers might lose some of their motivation to do good work if they are not included in the office party?

I am actually one of the uninvited temporary workers who overheard regular employees discussing the party. When I find a new job and give in my resignation, I'd like to leave them with some recommendations for the next time to avoid hurting someone like me again.

  • Someone please explain guys to me?

I'm a 57 year old female and, because of the econom,y I now have to live with 3 male roommates ranging in age from early 30's to mid-50's. and 2 dogs, not mine. It can be absolutely disgusting. There's dog hair in the refrigerator, not one of the 3 ever takes the garbage out, and they ask me if I know what cornholing means. But what they take seriously is how I've parked my car. If I park in the driveway it's always a few inches too far in 1 direction. If I park in the street, they would rather I park in the driveway.

Why do guys (and I really have tried to understand) do stuff like this?

  • Should I worry about my 12-year-old nephew and 8-year-old niece?

I had to move in with my divorced brother who is renting bedrooms to 2 other people besides me. My brother spends 3 nights a week at his girlfriend's house. My brother's children, girl 8, boy 13, sleep here in the same bed, both when he's here for the night, or not. When he spends the night here, he sleeps in the bed with them. I'm surprised that my brother and I have such differing views on parenting. The roommates and I are uncomfortably responsible for the children when he's not here. I'm a worrier by nature, and besides the swimming pool, the 8 hrs spent playing video games every day, and feeding them, I know that things happen.

For the families who follow this parenting style, am I being overly-cautious? Where's the line?
