  • Can anyone translate the non English parts of Brahma, Vishnu, Siva (by Rabindranath Tagore)?

Does anyone know what Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva say in this poem? I would assume that this is in Bengali. I can't put it onto a translation site because the characters are in English. Thanks!

    I THE DARK

In a worldless timeless lightless great emptiness

    Four-faced Brahma broods.

    nasad asin, no sad asit tadanim;

nasid raja no vioma paro yat.

    kim avarivah? kuha? kasya sarmann?

    Ambhah kim asid, gahanam gabhiram?

na mytur asid, amrtam na tarhi.

    na ratria ahna asit pratekh.

    anid avatam svadhaya tad ekam.

tasmad dhanyan na parah kim canasa.

    tama asit tamasa gudham agre;

    apraketam salilam sarvam a idam.

    tuchyenabhu apihitam yad asit,

    tapasas tan mahinajayataikam.

Of a sudden sea of joy surges through his heart –

    The ur-god opens his eyes.

    Speech from four mouths

    Speeds from each quarter.

    Through infinite dark,

    Through limitless sky,

    Like a growing sea-storm,

    Like hope never sated,

    His Word starts to move.

Stirred by joy his breathing quickens,

His eight eyes quiver with flame.

His fire-matted hair sweeps the horizon,

    Bright as a million suns.

From the towering source of the world

    In a thousand streams

    Cascades the primeval blazing fountain,

    Fragmenting silence,

    Splitting its stone heart.

    kamas tad agre sam avartatadhi

    manaso retah prathamam yad asit?

    sato bandhum asati nir avindan

    hrdi pratisya kavayo manisa

    II THE MUSIC

    In a universe rampant

    With new life exhalant,

    With new life exultant,

    Vishnu spreads wide

    His four-handed blessing.

    He raises his conch

    And all things quake

    At its booming sound.

    The frenzy dies down,

    The furnace expires,

    The planets douse

    Their flames with tears,

    The world’s Divine Poet

    Constructs its history,

    From wild cosmic song

    Its epic is formed.

    Stars in their orbits,

    Moon sun and planets –

    He binds with his mace

    All things to Law,

    Imposes the discipline

    Of metre and rhyme.

    In the Manasa depths

    Vishnu watches -

    Beauties arise

    From the light of lotuses.

    Lakshmi strews smiles -

    Clouds show a rainbow,

    Gardens show flowers.

    The roar of Creation

    Resolves into music.

    Softness hides rigour,

    Forms cover power.

    tirascino vitato rasmir esam:

adhah svid asid, upari svid asit?

    retodha asan, mahimana asan;

    svadha avasat, prayatih parastat.

Age after age after age is slave to a mighty rhythm –

    At last the world-frame

    Tires in its body,

    Sleep in its eyes

    Slackens its structure,

    Diffuses its energy.

From the heart of all matter

    Comes the anguished cry –

    ‘Wake, wake, great Shiva,

    Our body grows weary

    Of its law-fixed path,

    Give us new form.

    Sing our destruction,

    That we gain new life.’

    III THE FIRE

    The great god awakes,

    His three eyes open,

    He surveys all horizons.

He lifts his bow, his fell pinaka,

He pounds the world with his tread.

From first things to last it trembles and shakes

    And shudders.

The bonds of nature are ripped.

The sky is rocked by the roar

Of a wave of ecstatic release.

    An inferno soars –

    The pyre of the universe.

Shattered sun and moon, smashed stars and planets,

    Rain down from all angles,

    A blackness of all particles

    To be swallowed by flame,

    Absorbed in an instant.

    At the start of Creation

There was a dark without origin,

    At the breaking of Creation

    There is fire without end

In an all-pervading sky-engulfing sea of burning

    Shiva shuts his three eyes.

    He begins his great trance.

  • Drivers permit replaced, taking license test?

Hi, so I live in Connecticut and I recently got my drivers permit replaced (I had lost it). Now I am going for the license test. Connecticut state law dictates that you must have held your permit for at least 4 months prior to taking the license test. On my permit it shows the date of issue (January). Now I have held my permit for close to 2 years (yes I know I should have done it sooner), but the replacement will be less than 4 months (the time it took from me losing it to the re-issue was only about a month). Will I still be able to get my license (it says DUP-1 next to the 'Issued' statement, so they know it's a duplicate)? Thanks!

  • Thinking about the courses I want to take as a Freshman Engineer?

I will be entering college next fall (just applied so no decisions yet). I am thinking of going into Engineering (Computer), and was wondering if I had the time to fit in all the courses. How many courses to Frosh engineers usually take? In addition to the normal engienering reqs (which I am asking about), I also wanted to take an econ course, a psych course, and a language course. Will I have enough time to do that? Or will I be able to take those later on in college?

    Thanks!

  • Japanese, how would you say?

How would you say, "Can I try ordering in Japanese?" in Japanese (but kanji script)?

Also, to ask for something you say "(Name of Food) o onegaishimasu?" Meaning I would like (food), please. Right? And when do you use kudesai instead of onegaishimasu?

    Thanks!

  • Video of Usain Bolt's 100m Race?

Youtube is not working because of the annoying people who post fake videos. And any other video footage is unavailable to us in the US because of country restrictions. I swear to go I want to go punch Jeff Zucker in the face for not only monopolizing our TV viewing, but our internet viewing as well. It has been hours since the race and I can't even find a video of it!

Well I would be very happy if someone could link me to a video of the race. Thanks.

  • Apply to schools decided or undecided?

I am looking to major in engineering (the discipline has not been decided yet, although I am leaning more towards computers).

Most schools I go to, you apply to the university first and then declare major. However, some schools (i.e. CMU and Cornell) require you to apply to the specific engineering college first.

What about schools like Georgia Tech or UI Urbana Champagne? Do you apply to their universities, or in my case, their respective engineering colleges?

    Thanks in advance!

  • I recently read an article in the Australian Open website about the 'Golden Generation' of tennis?

They referenced this generation as being the top four players today, however, in my opinion they left out some pretty impressive players that really do comprise this generation. In your opinion, what 7-10 players make up the golden generation? Please be specific as to why you chose them, and if you could, rank them as well.

    Here are my choices:

    1) Roger Federer- We all know his legacy. 16 Grand Slam titles and numerous other records broken, he is arguably the GOAT

    2) Rafael Nadal- Federer's biggest rival, and closest threat to strip that GOAT title away from him. He has won 10 Grand Slam Titles, an Olympic gold medal, and is regarded as the King of Clay.

    3) Novak Djokovic- If not for last year's incredible run, he would have been put a little lower on the list. He was the biggest threat to knock the Federer-Nadal duopoly away for many years, finally having achieved it last year in becoming the world number one. He has won 4 Grand Slams, one Tour Final, and compiled arguable the greatest season ever in 2011.

    4) Andy Murray- I am a little hesitant to put him at number four. However he has maintained top four status for quite some time now, proving that he can contend with the big three. He has not won any Grand Slam titles, but has reached the finals 3 times (on the Hard Court Slams).

    5) Andy Roddick- I will probably be met with some backlash, however I do think he should be included in this exclusive list. Although he has only won one Grand Slam title, US Open 2003, he has reached 4 other Grand Slam Finals (losing to the GOAT each time), been in the top 10 year end for 7-8 years (forget how many exactly), held a world number one ranking, and had the fastest serve in the world for quite some time.

    6) Marat Safin- I don't know whether or not to add him to the 'Golden Generation' list, but he definitely was a powerful force this decade. He has 2 Grand Slam titles to his name, and a world number one ranking.

    7) David Ferrer- This will be another controversial pick, however he has been a dominant force in the tour for a long time (since around 2006). He has reached the semi finals in Grand Slams twice, and has reached the Tour Final once. He is always a perennial contender at Grand Slams, and his stability in the top 10 has been something that few others have enjoyed.

Now what are your picks for the Gold Generation of Men's Tennis?

  • College SAT Accepting?

Hi, I am currently a junior in High School and was looking at the college requirements and such. While reading about SAT's on forums, I read that after 3 SAT tests, colleges will average out the SAT scores. Now I am starting to get a little bit worried. I took an SAT in 8th grade so that I could attend CTY (a summer program), and then another one in 10th grade because my parents wanted me to practice the experience. obviously those two tests had scores that were lower than what I am expecting to send to colleges. Now I am planning to take a legitimate SAT in January, and backup in March if needed. Now if I have to resort to the March SAT, then I will be over the 3 SAT limit. Will the colleges see that I took a test in 8th grade and 10th grade, or will they still average the scores regardless of the fact that I was not the "appropriate" age. Thank you.

  • Math problem help please?

My sister needs help with a few algebra 1 problems, and although I take calculus right now, I am unfortunately stumped as to what to do.

She is learning factoring by grouping right now, and the answer that I came up with is not the same as the one in the book. So I need some help, thank you.

    r^2 -6r -9s^2 +9 factor be grouping

That is only one of the problems, and as you can see it is not a conventional one. If someone were to be able to guide me through the steps of this I will be able to help her on all other problems, thank you.

now I know it means that you cant call a method outside the main method into the main method because it is static, but I need to call it somehow to use my conversion

  • I am creating a calculator in Java...?

I am in very basic java right now and am making a calculator. I am stuck because my teacher is asking us to ask the user for an input and keep looping until he decides to not enter any more numbers (or something along those lines). My friend said to use a while loop to do it, but I am not sure how.

ps. I am not talking about those basic calculators where you add to integers together, I am talking the user can keep adding (or multiplying etc.) until he/she wants the answer.

ps2. like the calculator on your computer, except without decimals, a GUI, and using only the 4 basic operations.

    Thanks!
