  • What parts are user changeable on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61-6460?

I own a Lenovo Thinkpad T61-6460. As I received it, it has 3 GB of RAM, a dual core Intel processor (2.5 GHz), and an Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M for the GPU. Now this is a rather powerful laptop compared to most Dells that you see lining the shelves of Best Buy, but I'd like to know if I can replace parts to make it more powerful.

I'm fully aware that brand-name laptops usually solder everything that the soldering gun can reach to the motherboard making it irremovable, save for RAM and maybe the hard drive, but in my experience Lenovo is one of those freedom-liking companies whose products fit into the list of exceptions more often than the other brands. Anyway, are my specific GPU and processor user-replaceable? Thanks for the help.

  • Need help manually editing bits in DLL file, Lenovo Thinkpad Windows Vista 32-Bit?

I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 running Windows Vista, and I just bought a new battery for my system. It wasn't a brand-name battery, so the Power Manager alerts me very often that the battery is "not genuine." I don't want to uninstall the power manager, I know what I need to do to stop the alerts.

I found that I need to edit PWMTR32V.DLL in my program files and edit a sequence of bytes:

    85 C0 74 0A BD 09 00 00 00

    changed to

    85 C0 EB 0A BD 09 00 00 00

However, I can't find a good DLL editor program that lets me edit data in the way I need. Where can I find this.

I know exactly what I'm doing, no "don't do this you'll break it."

  • The ground prong on my laptop cord broke, safe to use with a surge protector?

Simply put, the third prong on my laptop's charging cord broke, and obviously I need to charge my laptop. I know that the third prong doesn't actually transport any power, and it's just for grounding in case of a short circuit. I'll be getting a replacement soon, but for now is it still safe to use if I plug it into a surge protector?

  • Uninstalled Avast to fix computer, safe to put back on?

I hate being the person who asks for computer help, mostly because I'm always the one giving help. Anyway, here's the story:

    Open laptop one day

Hear whirring of fans, nothing on screen

No big deal, this happens sometimes, just hard restart computer

Windows update recently downloaded updates, set to configure next shut down

But I just held down power button to hard restart, because of problem 2 lines ago

Start up, windows is configuring updates

    Configuring updates

    Still configuring updates

    It's not going to end

    Hard power off

    Safe mode

Safe mode startup says configurations failed, reverting changes

    Process done, automatically soft-restarts computer

    Windows starts to load normally

    Windows is configuring updates

Nothing has been changed, problem persists

    Pop in recovery disk

    Choose startup repair

    Can't fix it

System restore to a day ago

    Says it failed

Restart computer, log in seemingly successfully

    "System restore has completed successfully"

Computer freezes up within 6 seconds

    Hard restart

    Stuck at welcome

This goes on for a long time

System restore a few more times

    No success

Safe Modes boot up just fine

Back up everything on portable hard drive

Search around last minute for possible fix before I wipe and restore

See person with my same problem on forum

Says antivirus caused problem, uninstalling fixed it

    Look at safe mode desktop

Avast Antivirus icon in the corner

I never have any icons on my desktop (use rainmeter)

Sudden icon on desktop hints at what's causing problem

    Uninstall Avast

    Reboot computer

Well, would you look at that, my computer is fixed.

But I like Avast antivirus, what now?

There's my dilemma, will reinstalling Avast likely cause the problem again? Or can I put it back on safely? Are there issues with the newest version of Avast that might have caused my issue?

  • Does anyone have a Diablo III guest pass to spare?

I want to try out Diablo III, but there seems to be no free trial except for in the guest passes handed out with the collectors' edition. I don't know anyone with the collectors' edition, and I can't just spend $60 on a game that might not run well on my computer. Is there anyone out here willing to give me their guest pass? I'm willing to trade small Team Fortress 2 items, if you want, or gift a small (~$5) game on Steam (if there is anything for $5 on there). Thanks!

  • Installing and running Steam and games to an external hard drive?

I have a laptop that isn't so great at running games. Team Fortress 2 is almost unplayable. I have access to a work laptop that is great for running games, but I'm not allowed to install anything to it. With the laptop is an external hard drive that I am allowed to use, USB 3.0. Can I install Steam and Steam Games onto the external HD and run them efficiently on the computer? The external HD has plenty of space on it.

  • My laptop isn't using its full processing power?

I have an Acer Aspire laptop, and I enjoy playing old games. I play Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal, Counter-Strike, etc. However, even on a very recent laptop, the games lag a noticeable amount. Nothing I can't ignore on most games, on Half-Life 2 it's only slight. Team Fortress 2, though, is almost unplayable. When I go to the System Requirements Lab website, their "Can you Run It" tool tells me my laptop greatly exceeds the recommended specs required to play, yet I still get lag on medium graphics. This wouldn't bother me if it weren't for the fact that my brother has a Dell laptop with specs that are equal or lower to my laptop on all accounts, but his laptop plays every one of these games on medium to high graphics perfectly, with absolutely no lag. I use Game Booster, but it doesn't seem to help very much. I always make sure unnecessary programs are closed when playing, only so much as Avast antivirus running in the background. Why is my laptop not running these games as well?

    Specs for my laptop:

    Processor--Pentium Dual-Core CPU T4500 2.3GHz

    RAM--4 GB

    System Type--64-bit Windows 7

    Shared Video RAM--1.7 GB

    Dedicated Video RAM--64 MB

    All drivers up to date

    Specs for brother's Dell

    Processor--Intel Pentium CPU P6200 2.13 GHz

    RAM--3 GB

    System Type--64-bit Windows 7

    Shared Video RAM--1.2 GB

    Dedicated Video RAM--64 MB

    All drivers up to date

  • Help with custom computer desktop with Rainmeter?

So I'm browsing 4chan, and there's a computer thread. A person posts a screenshot of the desktop, and it looks amazing. Here's what it looks like: http://imgur.com/vIbwZ

Can anyone help me make my desktop look like that? I installed Rainmeter already.

  • Typical 4chan trolling or serious issue?

I'm browsing 4chan, and a post says to go to imagefap.com and put in a certain term. Naturally, I do exactly as the OP says. It gives me a page saying the page has been blocked due to child porn and that my IP has been recorded. Should have seen it coming. I looked it up and it seems that there is a very similar copypasta commonly used on online chat rooms, and the comments seem to contribute to it being just a prank, but I don't want to be on some police watchlist. Should I contact the website about this issue or do I just need to lurk more and know my copypasta better?

  • Tool for creating save game files for Skyrim on PS3?

I've loved playing Skyrim, and I'm a level 51 Imperial. Well, I was. I created a new character to mess around with being a high elf, and the autosave destroyed my level 51. No autosaves were spared, and the hard save was gone. After the ensuing rage about the instantly lost hundreds of hours of gameplay, I turn to the Internet to solve this problem. Is there a non-scam save game editor for PS3? Is there at least someone with a level 50's character, Nord or Imperial, skill 100 in one-handed and smithing, and around expert level destruction that can upload their save to me? (NOTE: Anyone who links me to Fileice or another downloading service that requires surveys will be reported)

  • How can I bypass my school's Internet filter?

First of all, I have good reason. I'm not trying to play online games or do other non-school stuff. The web filter they installed is DEFCON-1 tight. There are many legitimate websites that I cannot access. (even weather.com is blocked, God knows why) Many times my research is impeded by such blocking. I use my own laptop at school, so I can install programs and change system settings. Is there anything I can do to get around the school filter? I don't know what filter my school uses. I'm very good with computers, so I can easily work in complicated settings or command line if needed. I've been looking into setting up a proxy server for my computer, so instructions on how to set one up would be appreciated. Thanks for any help.

  • How can I get a slideshow as my screensaver on Ubuntu 11.10?

Recently, I dumped Windows Vista off the family computer after a virus wiped everything on the hard drive and replaced it with Ubuntu. Everything works great now, but my mom needs her thousands (not exaggerating) of pictures on the screen, randomized, as the screen saver. She has all of the pictures in a lot of organized folders. I can't find anything in the system preferences or the software center to do this. Can anyone help? I'm very good with computers so I can probably do any minor coding (I know how Ubuntu is with solutions by code) or other complex tasks given proper instruction. Thanks for any help.

  • Can my computer run Skyrim? I'm confused with DirectX compatibility?

Now, I have an Acer Aspire laptop. When I check on systemrequirementslab.com, it tells me that everything passes except 2 things:

    1. I have 1.9 GB RAM, minimum is 2 GB.

    2. My graphics card does not pass due to some DirectX thing, even though all the video card specs are above par.

I intend to remedy #1 by going to staples and upgrading the RAM, I am able to have 4 GB added (for a total of 6 GB DDR3 RAM) for $65. The problem lies with the video card. What's with this DirectX thing? Skyrim requires 512 MB of video RAM, I have 796 MB. Is there DirectX software that I can install to fix this? Other than those problems, my computer specs are above par for running Skyrim.

    2.30 GHz Dual Core processor

2 GB (for now) DDR3 RAM

    NVidia Graphics Card (796 VRAM)

Well over 6 GB free on HDD.

  • Java help for a complete beginner?

I am a complete beginner to both Java and coding in general. I am not creating something specific, I just want help to understand it. I have the Java For Dummies book right next to me and honestly I don't understand half of it. I am trying to learn to code in Java purely for education and learning to code has always seemed interesting to me. I also want to create my own mods for the popular game Minecraft, but that comes later. Can anyone offer an easy explanation or a website/tutorial (preferably not a video tutorial) on the internet that can help me?

  • Internet Bandwidth Prioritization?

I have AT&T's Pro Speed DSL, which is 3 Mbps. I get around a 2.6 Mbps regularly, which is supposed to happen because I'm not the only one using the entire Internet, and 2.6 Mbps is plenty fast for me. I use a Belkin N600 Dual Band N+ Wireless Router for the many things that connect to the Internet wirelessly. There is one problem. Whenever my mom uses her IBM Thinkpad to connect to the internet, our speed goes down by at LEAST 1 Mbps. The speed instantly goes back up to 2.6 Mbps the very instant I turn the wireless switch on her laptop off. Why does my mom's laptop seem to have maximum priority over our Internet network? Any way I can fix it? It can get very irritating.

  • How can I make Portal 2 run smoothly on my laptop?

I have Portal 2 for my laptop, which is very new. I just got the laptop last April. Anyway, Portal 2 is VERY LAGGY. In a small area in the game, it runs just fine. But in a large room, which the game mostly consists of, the game performs like a Compaq from the 90's trying to run 3 Call of Duty games at once. I tried adjusting the advanced video settings, no real improvements happened. Any help is greatly appreciated. My laptop is the Acer Aspire 5736Z-4826.

  • How do I build an Ubuntu installation/boot disk?

I have a rather old laptop with Windows XP on it. I'm trying to install the Netbook version of Ubuntu on it, but nothing is working. The BIOS on the laptop does not allow booting from a USB. I tried running the USB setup software on a CD, since the BIOS does allow boot from CD, but errors just occur, when setting up the CD. Any suggestions? How do I successfully put Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my IBM Thinkpad?
