What is the American military equivalent of a Spartan?
Which group within the American military is of equal power as the Greek Spartans? Base it on how they fight in groups, how they fight individually, how their endurance and strength goes, how their training goes, how they win battles, etc. I have a feeling most of us will say SEALs, but perhaps there is a group better.
2 AnswersMilitary10 years agoWhat are my chances of getting into West Point or Annapolis?
I'd like to know what you guys think are my chances of getting accepted into one of these prestigious military academies. Academics-wise I have a 3.93. I am in my junior year, and I take Honors Physics, Honors English, Honors Math (Pre calculus), Economics/Psychology, Chinese 3, and Orchestra. Some of my teachers like me a lot and some think I'm an ***. I need to work on that for good recommendations from everyone. Next year I will be taking BC Calculus, AP English, AP Government, AP Physics, AP Chinese 4, and Orchestra. I rank in the upper 10% of my class of 700 but i do not know what exact rank. Hopefully that is pretty competitive academically.
Extra curriculars that I do or have done are track, cross country, and soccer. Then I have done volunteer work in my Future Leaders program (I was in charge of our school's Clothe a Child), I helped with this Kid's show thing at my mall and over the last Spring break I did one week of volunteer work in Mississippi helping Hurricane Katrina victims. Back to sports, I was an ok player in soccer, and in track and cc I had somewhat decent times, and I had leadership positions in my team (I wasn't Captain though) by taking charge of a group of kids on runs and keeping my coach posted about how they're doing.
Physically I think I can handle it. I can run two miles in 11:27, I can do 110 push ups properly and continuously, I can do 137 sit ups, I can do 19 dead hang pull ups, and I think I can swim well enough to pass any tests.
So I'm going to be applying soon, and I was just wondering what you guys think I should improve on before an interview or anything deeper in the selection process. Thank you very much.
3 AnswersHigher Education (University +)1 decade agoWhat more do I have to do for BUD/S?
I know that you must be physically fit beyond belief, and I just want to know what a good goal I should set before if I were ever to go to BUD/S. I can do
-1 mile in 5:17 (hopefully 1.5 mile in under 8 minutes at least)
-110 push ups in a row (facing forward, fist on the ground and lowering the chest to it like the instructors want).
-137 sit ups in two minutes
-19 dead hang pull ups
-I don't know what my 500 yd swim time is but I should hope it's under 8 minutes.
I am 17 years old, and I know that there is far more that needs to be done before I go anywhere. What do you recommend I do or improve? Or do you think that it's possible I might have a good chance of passing BUD/S?
2 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoExplosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Officers?
What exactly is it about EOD training that causes such a high washout rate? Is it the amount of learning that must be accomplished, any physical training, or just some people decide to change heir mind during the training? And as for officers do they get any time at all to be out in the field defusing bombs themselves before they're assigned to a desk job? I'm pretty sure they do because I read a report on a female West Point graduate who had to try on the suit, but I'd like to be sure. Any EOD techs please say what you have on the matter please.
7 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoWhat's harder? A Navy SEAL workout or a British SAS workout?
I'm not asking for which elite unit produces a better end result (though I believe the an SAS trooper is a bit more elite than a SEAL) nor am I planning on joining the SEALs (I'm obviously American), I'm just curious as to which of the two workouts at the bottom is harder than the other. Please give me your opinion as to which you think is tougher and give a good logical explanation. Hopefully some answers from people who have served in the Navy or British army. I'm just curious. Thanks a lot Yahoo.
4 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoScared of Airborne School!!!?
I've been considering joining the Army infantry for a while, but I have heard that it is mandatory to go to Airborne School, and I am way too scared of jumping out of a plane. I know that tons of people who go to Airborne School are afraid to jump out of planes too do it anyway, but is there anyone who has parachuted before that can tell me what it's like to parachute or any other way to calm my nerves when I'm there? Or if there is no way for me to calm down should I just join another MOS? I'm fine with that too, but I would like some hope. And I don't want anyone bitching out at me because I'm a coward, I don't want to start something. Thank you
8 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoOn average, how many of these exercises can the Royal Marines do?
I want to know how many pressups, pullups, squats, knee raises, elbow to knees, box jumps, lunges, half sits, and tricep dips the average Royal Marine recruit for POC can do. Also how fast should they be able to run 5 kilometers? I know it sounds like a stupid question, but I've done my research and I can't find a good enough answer. If anyone has any idea or guess please tell me. And if anyone who has ever been in the Royal Marines, or military and has worked with the Royal Marines, tell me.
