  • Clarification about TOUGH SAT math question?

    the question is

if 0<=x<=y and (x+y)^2 - (x-y)^2 >=25, what is the least possible value of y?

After foiling and combining like terms, you get 4xy>=25

someone told me to take the square roots of both sides. This gives the correct answer (5/2).

My question is, how does taking the square roots of both sides give you the lowest value for y?

does it matter that the question said that 0<=x<=y?

Thanks, in advance for your help.

The answer sheet says it is -x sqrt (3x) but I don't see how they reached this answer

I greatly appreciate your help. I realize that these types of equations are a pain to display without appropriate notation.
