  • Wooden sidewalks in US.?

After watching some old westerns on TV, I was wondering if there were any wooden sidewalks left in any US towns that are in daily use and are more than just glorified tourist attractions.

  • The average price of Lucky Charms cereal in US?

Several supermarkets in the UK have now got a small US food section, I understand that most of these products have been imported but they seem very expensive for what they are, my question is, could you give me the average prices you guys pay in the states for these products?(I'll give you the price we pay for them in dollars).

Lucky Charms (average size box) - $12.48

    Pot of Fluff - $6.23

Kraft Giant Marshmallows (bag of) - $7.71

    A1 Steak Sauce - $8.57

    Borden Eggnog - $9.35

I won't bore you with anymore, I'd just be interested to know how badly we are being ripped off.

  • Help finding a book on Australian snake cures.?

A decade ago whilst living in Australia I found myself stuck in Liverpool for an afternoon after wandering about for a while I ended up in the library where I found a book about the history of Australian snakebite cures up to the time of antivenin, it was a fascinating book going into the history of the great Sydney fairs of the 19th century and early 20th century with the snake men and their exhibitions. For the life of me I can't remember the name of this book or who the author is, one of the stories mentioned was that of governor Macquarie who was so terrified of snakes that whilst building the settlement on Bennelong Point he imported tons of Irish soil in the belief it would stop snakes coming on to the land as there are no snakes in Ireland, when they built the Opera House they found the soil level.

If anyone can help me it would be most appreciated.

  • Why doesn't tinned corned beef taste like it use to?

Why doesn't tinned (canned) corned beef taste as good as it did when I was a kid? I've tried just about every kind available in the UK but none come close, I had some over the counter in Southern Ireland last year and it took me back to my childhood, but unable to find any as good here.

  • Why do I always get ill when I have time off work?

Hi, my problem is, almost every time I take some leave I get ill, I suffer from a condition known as Von Hippel Lindau syndrome which has resulted in me having to have my adrenal glands removed due to tumours, so i'm at risk of having an addisonian crisis, 2 easter's ago I contracted sepsis from a bad chest infection, every holiday its the same whether its flu, tonsillitis, chest infection etc. I take very little time off work sick in fact prior to the sepsis I hadn't had a day off sick in 5 years, but I'm getting fed up every time I have some free time I feel terrible, have any of you got any suggestions to help me alleviate this problem?

I'm not interested in quack medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture etc, only real ideas thanks.

  • Collar on our westie puppy?

We have just got our Westie puppy off a registered breeder, he is a bit of a live wire but we have found that if we put a collar on him (only for an hour at a time and its soft and not constrictive) his whole demeanour changes, he becomes subdued and sulks, I have never seen this behaviour in other dogs, usually they find it a bit strange but it doesn't affect their general character, is this normal in this breed?

  • Christmas roast goose.?

At Christmas my family and I tend to have a large free range capon as we dislike the blandness of turkey (I've tried bronze turkeys and have never overcooked one but it is still boring ), but I've often wondered about roast goose, does it taste anything like duck?, which to be honest I'm not that keen on (except the way the chinese eat it crispy), I've been put off by a friend who had a goose for Christmas several years ago, he said it ruined his family holiday as no one liked it, what do you recommend?

  • Has anyone ever heard of a dish called Cockeyed Kipper?

When I was young my mum and grandmother use to occasionally cook me something called a Cockeyed Kipper, it was a dish which consisted of sliced cheese placed on a heatproof plate with an egg or 2 cracked open on top, then it was placed under a hot grill until the egg was cooked and cheese bubbling, then seasoned with salt and pepper and eaten with bread and butter, once in a while I'll cook this for tea on a Sunday, but I have never met anyone who has ever heard of this dish, does anyone eat a similar dish but call it something else?

If you do please let me know thanks.

  • Looking for an authentic US chili recipe that has no tinned tomatoes in.?

I've heard there is a contentious issue regarding tinned tomatoes in an authentic USA chilli con carne, (as there is with a real bolognese sauce), has anyone got any good recipes that leave it out?

I haven't got a problem with using tomato paste (puree in UK), I want to make one this morning and would really appreciate your help, I have made chilli with tomatoes in the past and i've been fairly disappointed with the results.

    Many Thanks

  • Decency in the wild west.?

Why does it seem that there was a shortage of good decent people inhabiting the historical wild west of the US?

Having read a lot on the subject its always amazed me that even heroes like Wyatt Earp were seriously flawed characters, I'm sure that there was some human decency at that time but we hear so little about these people, I understand that these times were tough and noble deeds were done, however, i can't think of anyone other than minor characters who shone through.
