  • What kind of hay do you feed your horse and what area are you in?

I have been feeding my horses Coastal Bermuda hay and have not had any problems with it but after doing a little research I am hearing that Coastal Hay may be a factor in some horses colicing (balling up in the intestines).

I have been looking into Bahia Hay but have heard that it is not as palatable to the horses and some people have had a hard time keeping weight on their horses because they are not eating enough of it.

I live in Charleston SC which is on the coast and though I know it is not named for such, Coastal hay is the predominate hay fed here along with Timothy or T&A (but you have to have a deep pocket for them).

Can you please give me your pros and cons on the kind of hay you feed?

  • How do I keep horses from trampling round bale without a hay ring?

Does anyone else have this problem? I do not have a hay ring so the horses end up wasting more of the round bale then they eat. Short of buying a hay ring is there another solution? I've considered fashioning one out of 2x4's, has anyone else ever made something like this and how did it work?
