  • Are backup goalies inscribed on the Stanley Cup if they are dressed but play no minutes?

As in Jonathan Bernier. He didn't play any minutes in the playoffs, and if you only count games he actually played in, he doesn't meet the regular season requirement.

He was however dressed as the backup for every game. Does the fact that he didn't actually play minutes mean he doesn't qualify to be inscribed on the cup, or does being dressed as a backup count as playing in the finals?

  • Is it possible to find the area of an irregular pentagon if each side's length is given but the angles are not?

I am tutoring someone in honors geometry, and we are currently on a chapter involving finding the area of various quadrilaterals. The chapter is near the end of the book, and involves a great deal of integrating triangle theorems and other rules given about diagonals and what not of quadrilaterals.

Going over homework, I came across a problem in trying to find the area of a pentagon. The pentagon was shaped like a house, with the base side equaling 8, each of the walls equaling 4, and each slope of the roof equaling 5

    5/ \5

    4l l4

    _

    8

    There were NO ANGLES GIVEN

If It was given that the two base angles were right angles, it would be easy to cut out the bottom rectangle (4x8) and add the angels of the top triangle, which would be an isosoles triangle with two sides of 5 and one of 8 (cut in half and do pythagorean theorem to find height and multiply by half of base)

However, because no angles are given, it can't be implied that the base of the house is infact the same as the base of the roof (the base of the isosolese triangle) and therefor we couldn't find the area of the pentagon through simply cutting apart a triangle and a quadrilateral.

Ofcourse if all the sides are given in a triangle, all of the angles with automatically be the same thing because there is congruency with triangles with the same sides. Pentagons cannot have such a postulate, because the sides can be in several different arrangements.

Is there, however, a way to find the area of a pentagon when you know each side, but don't have any angels

  • Did Pietrangelo get cheated on these Norris Nominations?

I figured it would be Karlsson - Pietrangelo - either Weber or Chara

Karlsson was obvious, and Weber and Chara were definitely in the top 4, but I thought Pietrangelo was widely considered to have had the 2nd best season after Karlsson

Especially surprising that Nashville got both the Vezina nomination and the Norris nomination whereas St. Louis got neither

I have no fan bias, just find it weird. Thoughts?

  • Which of the top 4 professional sports leagues do you think is the best compared to their sport?

That is to say, if you have an equal amount of love and appreciation for each sport: baseball, football, basketball, and hockey, which of the professional leagues: MLB, NFL, NBA, or NHL does the best job in presenting and organizing the sport?

So if, for example, you enjoy watching NFL as much as you enjoy watching NHL, but you actually enjoy the sport of football more than you enjoy the sport of hockey, you would like the NHL more.

  • Do players on the Flyers score more than they could on any other team?

That is to say, could a player like Claude Giroux score 90+ points on any other NHL team? Will Richards, Carter, or Gagne ever score as much as they did with the Flyers (even if they weren't on such a defensive team like the Kings)? Would Matt Read score 47 points on a different team?

Or in the other direction, if a player like Bobby Ryan went to the Flyers, would he suddenly become a 90 point per season player?

It seems to me that in judging the players on the Flyers from the perspective of another team that the amount of points they get are less important than they would be on another team. If a player had 93 points on say, the Blackhawks, I would consider him to probably be a better player than Giroux on the Flyers, because Giroux's numbers seem to me to be inflated.

Does anyone else feel this way about Flyers players, or are those Flyers players actually good enough to warrant their numbers on other teams?

If this is the case with Flyers players, is this from Laviolette's coaching style or is it something else?

Are there any other teams that create a similar inflation, if one exists?

  • What are the odds the Kings trade off Quick in the offseason?

Quick has been a monster this season, but the Kings have been struggling. Right now, both Quick and Bernier have 2 years left on their contracts, but Quick ends as a UFA while Bernier ends as an RFA. Everyone is talking about trading off Bernier, whose contract is stellar for how good he is, because we would intend to keep Quick. While I'd hate to see Quick go, keeping him would mean signing him to a huge contract in 2013.

Quick is going to have a lot of stock going in to the offseason. If the Kings make the playoffs, he'd have to get a Vezina nomination, and is the only reason the Kings aren't near the bottom of the league. I'd figure the Kings would be asking for a high first rounder, if not 2, and a top notch young forward. They've traded away their own first rounders in 2012 and 2013, and considering their need to rebuild from a poor season. I could see Edmonton trading Taylor Hall and a first rounder in 2012 to secure a top goalie, something they've been searching for.

How likely do you think it is that Quick will be traded in the 2012 offseason, and what could the Kings get in return?

  • What could the Kings trade Brown or Bernier for?

After seeing Jack Johnson go in what I think was a bad trade on the Kings' part, I've heard a lot of rumors surrounding Brown and Bernier. I'd rather not see either of these players go, but from the sound of these rumors, it doesn't sound unlikely. So what possible trade offers could there be for either of these players?

  • Can two parties in a dispute contract with each other the obligation to follow the judgment of a third party?

Suppose two people are in a dispute over some amount of property, and rather than going an official civil court they want instead to explain their case to a neutral, third person, and bind themselves by that persons judgment through a contract. Is there anything in any of the states' laws (especially California) or in US law that prevents this? If not, is there any limitation on the judgment that person can make if not otherwise stipulated in the contract, such as whatever limitations there are on real judges in real courts?

  • Any predictions on who the 4 teams were that voted against realignment?

Mine are Tampa Bay, Florida, Carolina, and New Jersey.

Tampa and Florida have the same level of competition whether they're in the southeast division or the new Northeast + Florida and Tampa conference, yet both of them now have to travel much further to play their Northeast interdivision teams. All of the other teams in the Northeast who have to travel to Florida are happy to have these teams in their conference because they get two franchises that aren't the most competitive (especially Florida) so teams like Montreal will make the playoffs every year. Plus the teams get to travel to a sunny state more often. Only Tampa and Florida are screwed in this.

New Jersey and Carolina are now part of a division that has Pittsburgh, Washington, Philadelphia, and the Rangers, so their chances of making the playoffs are now going to be very slim. They don't gain anything from travel, and they don't really gain anything financially from having this tougher schedule, so there is really only a downside for these two teams. The rest of the teams in this division are probably happy, since Pittsburgh and Washington get their rivalry, and the rest of the Atlantic division is probably happy to stay with each other.

The teams in the Central conference have really tough competition in an 8 team group, but they all benefit so much from the travel realignment.

The teams in the West are probably indifferent, as there isn't too much difference in the competition, even though it is pretty good, and they benefit somewhat from the travel.

Anyone else have a prediction on who the 4 "no's" were?

  • Will Modano sign for a year in Dallas?

I'm not a fan of Dallas or Modano's, so I haven't heard any rumors. But I realized this signing would more than likely go down, much like Selanne re-signing in Anaheim.

Dallas has no real second line center, and doesn't really have any major playoff aspirations next year, so getting Modano for that role would make sense, if he can play 15+ minutes per game.

Has anyone heard any serious rumors of this happening?

  • Is there a way to watch a replay of a daily news broadcast online?

Yesterday, I was playing soccer with my buddies at a local park in the San Fernando Valley. An ABC eyewitness news team offered to put us on TV as part of a bit they were doing on how hot it was, since it was triple digit heat while we were playing.

The broadcast was on Thursday's 6pm ABC eyewitness news in Los Angeles. I saw part of it, but if there's a way to see a replay of it online, that would be nice. Anyone know of a way to replay old broadcasts?

  • Going in to next season, what team has the best starting 6 players?

Taking every part into equal consideration; the first line of offense, first pair of defense, and starting goalie combined, who has the best "starting 6"?

BQ: If you keep the starting goalie, but take the 2nd line of offense and second pair of defense, who has the best overall second line?

  • SEVEN AND A HALF MILLION dollars? Are you kidding?

When Columbus signed Wisniewski for 5 and a half, we all knew it wasn't because he was actually worth that much. He was paid that because Columbus believed they had to overpay him so that he would come to a mediocre franchise.

But arbitration doesn't take into account the need to overpay. They are supposed to award the player his actual value based on specific comparisons. No defenseman comes close to 7.5, and only Campbell, the most overpayed player in the league, gets over 7 at all. How the hell does arbitration factor in Shea Weber's stats and get a number that is far and away the highest amount for a defenseman ever.

I honestly think Columbus' management overpayed Wisniewski less than arbitration awarded Shea Weber

  • What do you think of this bet for cup winner?

The wager is for the winner of the Stanley Cup. I get to choose any 5 teams I want, and the other person gets the remaining 25.

    I chose the following:

    LA Kings

    Vancouver Canucks

    Pittsburgh Penguins

    Washington Capitals

    Boston Bruins

Which side of the bet would you choose, and which 5 teams would you take

  • Are the Blackhawks still playoff worthy?

Last year they barely made playoffs, only because Dallas blew it, and this offseason they've lost much more talent than they've gained (not that trading away Campbell was a bad thing, but it does take away some talent)

Detroit and Nashville lost a little bit too, but they were 2nd and 5th place. Has Chicago lost so much for second year in a row that they can't sneak in again?

  • Can a player theoretically win the Calder Trophy twice?

Ken Dryden won the Conn Smythe before he won the Calder, because he hadn't yet played in a season that counted as his rookie season before he competed in the playoffs.

I know if you play fewer than 25 games in your first season, then you're still eligible to be a rookie (for the calder or the rookie allstar game) the next year. But does that mean a player couldn't theoretically win the Calder twice, the first time playing 24 games, and the second time playing more. Like if he scored a hundred goals in the last 24 games the first year, and a hundred goals the next full season, could he take the Calder twice? If not the Calder, what about the Hart

  • What is the IBF international heavyweight title, as opposed to the IBF title.?

I'm trying to understand the boxing organizations. I know that there are 4 major titles: WBA-who's champ is Haye, WBC- whos champ is Vitali Klischko, WBO-who's champ is Wladimir Klischko, and the IBF.

I know Wladimir Klischko has the IBF heavyweight title, but when I was reading about Tomasz Adamek on wikipedia, it says he won the "IBF International Heavyweight Title" when he beat Andrew Golota, and has retained it ever since, fighting fairly frequently, so I know he didn't lose it because he didn't defend the belt in time.

Can someone explain what the difference between IBF and IBF international heavyweight titles is? Is it a completely different federation or some kind of lesser champion?
