  • Are ants detrimental in compost and veg bed?

I turned over some earth in my veg bed and found a colony of yellow/golden coloured ants and what I assume to be their eggs. They are creamy coloured and a bit similar to long grain rice but a bit shorter. Is this a bad thing? If so, how do I get rid of them?

Also, whilst turning the contents of my compost bin, again I disturbed another colony of ants, but these were the regular kind, brown/black coloured, again with eggs. Is this bad? Should I be worried?

  • What should be grown after Brassicas for good crop rotation?

I know that after growing Legumes (Peas & Beans) you should grow Brassicas (Cabbage & Broccoli) so they absorb the nitrogen left by the legumous plants. What do you grow after growing brassicas then?

I've grown and harvested chinese brassicas (pak choi and choi sum) what should I now grow in that space?

What should I grow after spinach?

  • Is himalayan balsam same as busy lizzie balsam camellia?

I have some seedlings of Busy Lizzie Balsam Camellia which are taller and stronger and have pointed leaves like New Guinea Impatiens than my regular busy lizzies.

I've read that Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) is an invasive plant as it shoots seeds 2 metres away.

Do I have the same thing and should I be worried and eradicate my seedlings before they reach flowering stage?

  • Should I pick off male cucumber flowers?

I have 2 Cucumber plants, 'Marketmore' growing in 6inch pots inside the house. They now stand 18inches (46cm) tall. They are in flower and a few flowers have wilted and dropped off.

Do I need to pinch off the male flowers on these cucumbers?

Do I need to hand-pollinate? There are no bugs/bees inside the house to do the job.

Should I plant them outside now? I live in South-East England.

  • What's eating my Lillies?

My lillies have become under attack and the results are very lacy looking holes in the leaves. The holes are quite small but numerous on every leaf regardless of them being Asiatic Lillies or Oriental (fragrant) lillies.

We have seen small bright orange beetle things (fairly longish bodies - Not ladybirds) on the plants, usually near the top, often they are mating! Are these the culprits? What are they? What can I do about them?
