I am no longer able to answer questions on Yahoo!Answers due to health problems. However, I have created a website that contains many answers in my category of economics, and an explanation for how to figure out the answers to many other questions. http://economicsonlinetutor.com/ I have created a Facebook page for this called Economics Online Tutor.

  • Computer set-up problems?

Not long ago, I had to do a forced shut-down by unplugging my computer (I have had to do this several times before, without any problems). When it restarted, Windows went through a disk-check process (also not uncommon). This time, however, all of my settings were lost, and I had to reset everything. Two problems remain that I can't figure out how to fix:

    1. All icons missing from start menu. This is not a major problem for me because I don't use the start menu to access any programs or sites, but I like to keep some important items there as a backup source. When I find a program to put back on, I right-click and select "pin to start menu", but nothing happens. The menu remains blank.

    2. This is a bigger problem for me. Printer setup has not worked for me. After numerous attempts using the control panel (Windows Vista), an the printer options, as well as reinstalling my printer (Lexmark Series 2600, no network), I have managed to get printing to work from the internet, but it will not work from Microsoft Works. From word, it says printer not found. From spreadsheet, it says no default printer set. I have gone through the steps listed (control panel, set default, etc.) This does not fix the problem. I have files in both word and spreadsheet that I need to be able to print.

  • Computer boots up ok, but internet connection is slow?

I don't have any trouble starting up my computer, but connecting to internet explorer is very slow, getting worse every day. What could cause this? I have broadband cable, Windows Vista, and IE8. It was better before IE8, but had already started getting worse before I upgraded. I do file cleanup regularly, I tried defragmentation but Norton says I don't need it. I don't have a lot of things stored on my computer, and my thinking is that whatever I have there would more likely cause problems with booting up than accessing the internet.

What can I try? I can think of a couple of possibilities; would it help if I had a computer with more memory and bigger hard drive? Could the problem be with my home page? I use the cable company's email access for home page, that is most convenient for my family because we all use their email service for our main email accounts, but that page seems to be what I am waiting for most of the time. The cable company says there is no problem with their service.

Any help would be appreciated. I am not a computer wizard, so please keep any explanations simple; anything I need to try, I need to be able to understand it in simple language.

  • IE8 Question - Using the back button?

When I use the back button, the results are very erratic. Instead of taking me to the previous page I was on, it takes me in different directions, sometimes skipping the previous page altogether. I never had this problem before IE8.

  • How do I get telemarketers to quit calling. I am on the national do not call list.?

I found the web site to register a complaint, but it requires a name or phone number. These calls always show on caller id as name unknown and number unknown. I haven't had a problem yet with repeat calls, I'm concerned with the large number of first time callers.
