  • An Old Board Game With Marbles?

My grandmother used to have a board game where the object was to get 4 or 5 marbles from their starting point to an adjacent "home" by traveling around the game board clockwise. The marbles fit into little circular cut-outs all over the game board, which was made of the typical cardboard. There was a circle of spaces around the middle called the "fast track" that would get a marble around the board quickly. The first person to get all their marbles home won the game.

I cannot for the life of my remember the name, and none of my elders seem to remember it either. Help!

  • Visual memory deficit; so how do you explain this?

My teenage daughter has been impaired by a visual memory deficit most of her life. Recently, maybe within this past year, she's shown a couple aptitudes that have me scratching my head.

Once while on a trip we saw an old-fashioned weaving machine. I'm a very visual learner, but this thing was just a jumble of string and wood to me. My daughter studied it for about a minute and declared, "Oh! I see how it works." To her, it made perfect sense. How is that possible?

Another thing is that she's recently fallen in love with Lego kits. The more intricate and involved, the better. 2, 3 booklets of instructions? Bring it on!

How are these things possible for a person with a visual memory deficit? I know she's not misdiagnosed: she's been dealing with this for far too long. But how can she look at a simple machine and have it figured out? How can she follow 200+ steps of instructions from a booklet on how to build something? Most importantly, how do I tap into this to help her succeed?

  • What is "potato surfing?"?

SuperPoke on Facebook has an action that says, "Potato surf with..." in the PG-13 category. What in the world is that??? (If it's dirty, please try to be as clean and encyclopedia-like as possible.)

  • Why is it best to exit a vehicle when caught in a snow storm?

Is it really better to leave a car or other vehicle when you're stranded in the snow to seek alternate shelter? Why wouldn't a car insulate you the way even a snow cave would?
