Awesome Dragon
Some good horror books (witches, demons or ghosts)?
I'm looking for specific types of horror books. Mainly, ones about witches and/or demons, but I love a good ghost story, too. I'm a Stephen King and John Saul fan, but I don't like Peter Straub. The only good horror book involving witches that I've found so far was The Dead Path by Stephen M. Irwin, and I'd love to find others even remotely like it.
Thanks in advance for any answers you can provide.
2 AnswersBooks & Authors7 years agoLooking for good fantasy books. Any suggestions?
Greetings. As stated above, I am looking for some good fantasy books (particularly high fantasy), because I can't find many that I care all that much for. Any suggestions you have would be most helpful.
I love Lord of the Rings and David Eddings. I refuse to read Wheel of Time because I can't stay focused on a series with so many books. I read Wizard's First Rule and found it considerably dull. I don't mind the DragonLance Saga, but they got a bit old after the first few books. I'm not fond of Brandon Sanderson's work (Mistborn--it was too alien for me). I read Dragon Bones and Dragon Blood by Patricia Briggs because they started with an approach I found intriguing. I read The Sword, The Ring and The Chalice by Deborah Chester and found them a bit too feminine (here meaning romantic) in style, as well as a bit dull and alien. I've read Earthsea. I tried Sword of Shannara, but found it rather dull (although I am thinking of picking it up again). I'm currently reading Elvenbane by Andre Norton and Mercedes Lackey and find it pretty good, and not too different. I have not been able to finish The Inheritance Cycle. I like Xanth novels well enough and find Pratchett not too bad. I don't like The Amber Chronicles. Robert Asprin is pretty good.
Getting beyond more traditional high fantasy, I like dark things as long as they have humor. I'll go for children's or YA books, but paranormal romance makes me sick. I like Harry Potter, fractured fairy tales of almost any kind, Gail Carson Levine, Shannon Hale, Vivian Vande Velde, Dragon Slippers, and The Looking Glass Wars. I'm planning on reading Howl's Moving Castle once I can get my hands on it.
I like things that have humor in them, as well as some dramatic elements. Torture is always a plus, as are dragons. I like a little bit of romance, but don't go for sex scenes. I love it when there are a few cliches, but others are made fun of. So, basically, something serious that doesn't take itself too seriously. Or just something that isn't serious at all.
Sorry for the length of this blurb. I just wanted to make sure everyone understood what I'm looking for as well as I could describe it. Thanks for taking the time to read, and answer, if you so choose.I greatly appreciate any help. You guys are all freaking awesome.
