  • What kind of BS is this? I just got this in?

WASHINGTON - The Defense Department, after insisting for months that the unit would come home on time, has extended the tour of 2,200 Marines in Afghanistan.

The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is doing combat operations in the volatile south, will stay an extra 30 days and come home in early November rather than in October, Marine Col. David Lapan confirmed yesterday.

Military leaders as recently as Wednesday had stressed the need for additional troops in Afghanistan. Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has repeatedly praised the work of the 24th in fighting Taliban militants in Helmand Province.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, however, has repeatedly said he did not intend to extend or replace the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, calling their deployment there an extraordinary, one-time effort to help tamp down the increasing violence in the south.

Asked about the possibility of an extension in early May, Gates said he would "be loath to do that." He added that "no one has suggested even the possibility of extending that rotation." Lapan said yesterday that commanders in Afghanistan asked that the Marines stay longer.

The Pentagon announced in January that the 24th Marines were being ordered to Afghanistan largely because efforts to press other NATO nations to increase their troop levels at the time had failed.

Commanders faced with increasing violence have said they need at least 7,500 more troops in Afghanistan. And President George W. Bush and defense officials have said they hope to identify additional units by the end of the year that could go to Afghanistan early next year.

"The Taliban and their supporters have, without question, grown more effective and more aggressive in recent weeks ... as the casualty figures clearly demonstrate," Mullen told a Pentagon press conference Wednesday.

He added, "It's a very complex problem, and it's tied to the drug trade, a faltering economy and, as I've said many times, the porous border region with Pakistan. There's no easy solution, and there will be no quick fix."

  • HELP! What should I do? My husband is about to be deployed for a?

...second time to Iraq. I know how close these people get. I'm here at home with the kids/horses, and I begged him not to reenlist. We don't need the money. I really am thinking about leaving him before he gets back. I love him like no one's business, but I can't take another year of this. I really am thinking about cheating because he's leaving me again, when I begged him not to. I don't think that is the correct think to do, but at the same time, I really did beg him not to reenlist.

  • Polls please. Tell me what you think of my letter. I got 0 response on family/relationships?

I've been estranged from my 19 y/o daughter for about 5 months. I wrote her a letter. What do you think?

    Maya,

I hope you realize how many times I've spoken to you in my mind...apologizing for the wrong words I've used with you, worried about how you would perceive me.

I've let you down. I've been a horrible mother, emotionally unavailable for years. I put my own needs ahead of yours. I was selfish, and I'm sorry for that.

I remember you as a kid, playing. I have pictures of almost everything you did, your birth, the kids playing with you across the street, everything. You are my first daughter.

My greatest fault is that I never told you how important you are to me. I was harsh with you (as my mother was with me).

I hope you know in the future how much I truly love you, and that I think every day how blessed I am to have you as my daughter.

  • Depakote ER vs Lithium?

...have fought depression for years and years, and I'm also an R.N., but not in Psych. SSRIs are now a joke with me (they worked 15 yrs ago), Wellbutrin gives me flat out panic attacks, trips to the ER, etc etc etc. Have finally come to the conclusion that I am probably a Bipolar 2, and my Doc wants me on Lithium for a mood disorder. I've heard nothing but bad things about Lithium, and told him to PLEASE try me on something else. Already tried Lamictal, got bad skin problems. So now I'm started on Depakote ER, 250mg at night, and told Doc if this doesn't work after a few months, I'll try the *GD* Lithium. Is there anyone out there that can help, or at least give me some good advice?

  • Need advice from the married ladies, now, please.?

I was on my husband's computer a bit ago, and I saw that he had been on Facebook. He hadn't said anything to me about it, so I created a profile and found he created one about a week ago. He had added one yound woman that he met a year or so ago in South Carolina, but never even told me he had a page. Hmmm. Got me thinking. I called him at work and asked for the password so that could see if he had claimed to be single, or whatnot. Well, he just didn't put anything. We have been married for 9 years. He also posted pics of his Mom and sister, and plenty of him, but none of me, or his stepkids (mine from previouis relationship). I'm really hurt. I kept my temper, and told him just that. I also said that it seemed like he was trolling, and if he is really unhappy we need to talk. He sounded sincere and said he would delete the whole thing, and/or put "married". I said no, I just want the truth about your feelings. He had to get back to work. What should I say when he gets home?

This is a woman he met while away at a class for 2 weeks. He is also getting sent overseas soon for a year. I really want to know if I can trust him. I'm thinking of sending this woman a nice message, and explain the situation to her. I'm wondering what he says while he's away. I know they are not having an affair (she lives too far away, and it seems they truly are just friends, I read their messages - hell, he gave me the password), but I'd be really interested to know what he tells people when he's by himself (neither one of us wear wedding rings)

  • How do I tell my first child, a son, that I I still love him, despite his troubles?

...in two days (29th)... it will be his 21st birthday. *J* is furious that I became an alcoholic after my second husband (a Police Officer) was sent overseas in 2003. I (think) that I know where my son is staying. J is very unrealistic about finances.

His Stepdad , *K*, is not accepting of my wishes of seeing my son at least get a card on his birthday. K is being sent back to Iraq again. I really miss my son and at least want him to have a card. My son has been through a lot of pain (his real Dad paid NO child support), and my son also saw me have a horrible nervous breakdown. He also witnessed my own father die. J was in the car when my Dad died of his third heart attack. J was 12 at this event.

What can I do? J has been in jail three times now, all related to minor drug charges, nothing for more than 2 mos.

I know hurt he is, and he doesn't want to see me, but at the same time, he's my first child, and I love him no matter what.

    Advice please. THX

  • HELP! My Jack Russell just started killing my chickens...?

He's a year old, was neutered at three months, crate trained, and is UTD all all shots, etc. and has had free run of my farm (and the chickens have always been here) since he got here @11 weeks. I caught him in the act of killing the first one and yelled and slapped him. He did the same thing again today, after my husband accidentally let him out of the kennel. I put him on a swivel cable today, to make sure he could pee/poop. When I went to feed him in his old crate tonight (I took him off the cable to feed him) the first thing he did was pee in it. I just want him gone tomorrow. I'm thinking of having him put down. I'm to the point of hating this dog, and I don't like the feeling. I've contacted J.R. Rescue, and they told me that "..that's just what J.R.s do". I've had them before and that's NOT the way my previous J.R.s acted like. Advice, please.

  • What can I do ?

...my husband is being sent back to Iraq for the second time. It was over a year the first time, it will be over a year this rotation. He's a medic, so I doubt (hope) that he will actually be killed, but his absence is difficult. I'm trying to get a party together for him before he leaves (family, co-workers). I guess I should write him a really nice letter to take with him, too. Do you think there is anything else I should do?

  • What do you think of the bombing in Iran?

I am an American, my religion is Bahai. My father died and is buried at Arlington. He served for many years in the United States Navy/Capitol Hill in D.C. He died in 2000, at age 69. My husband is a U.S. Medical Officer (Sgt--NCO) called to serve for a second time in Iraq. He will be flying overseas again this year, for yet another year. I support my husband, I supported my Dad. I'm upset that force will again be used. If you understand the Bahai faith, you will know that physical force is not an option in my mindset. Call me a Tibetan monk. I prefer anything to violence. I DO SUPPORT OUR TROOPS AS THEY HAVE BEEN TAUGHT. I PREFER UNIFIED PRAYER.

  • What kind of electoral system is this malfunctional?

It is absolutely incredible to me that MY VOTE (I LIVE IN FLORIDA -- GO GATORS) is not counted. The "electoral college" is only another way of saying "Your Vote doesn't count, beeotch"

I detest the "American" voting system, it is just as twisted as the *GD* "War" we are fighting. And yes, I've given years to this "War". Husband going back overseas, for a year. Second time. Don't you dare dictate to me

  • I need ideas for April Fools?

..my husband is going to be home in about an hour...he says I drink too much. I'm thinking about strewing a few beer cans all about the kitchen and making it look as though I've committed suicide with a knife, using some ketchup. All the lights will be out when he comes home, and it's really dark. Do you think that is too scary? Sorry, I can't wait to jump up and say HAPPY APRIL FOOLS!
