I've used to read Stephen King and Dean Koontz a lot. Most recently, I've been into crime dramas. Now, I find myself wanting to find a horror novel that will scare me. I love a book that can actually scare me. Any suggestions?

I'm not talking about the compassion fatigue or burnout that can be experienced by some in the helping professions. I'm talking about a regular person whose compassion slowly bleeds away until there is none left. Your thoughts?

I am hoping someone remembers this romance novel from way back when. The book had a scene where a mounted policeman was unseated by his horse. The horse then ran away. A woman caught the horse and calmed it down. The woman and policeman became lovers. That's about all I remember. Any help would be appreciated.
