The chase

I take a sip of water after my last sprint. It has only been 5 minutes and my legs have already given up. A whistle is heard that hints us to walk up and stand by the starting point. I am still deciding if I should take my bottle with me incase I become dehydrated again. I reach a decision and replace it back next to my belongings. Knowing I have competition, I walk up and position myself to the back of the line. The three words are yelled before a gun shot is heard. Ready, I’m not. Set, a deep breath. Go, and the race begins. Obviously I’m not planning on winning but I make myself look like I’m running for my life. Pathetic try-hard. All the athletes have passed. This is hopeless. I don’t even know where I’m going. The red flags are nowhere to be seen. The cheering has faded. I am lost. Four tracks, four different directions, stand before me. Which one to take? The drizzling made me forget. So I blindly accept the nearest route and meet a blanket of darkness. Silence filled the cave, until a loud thump startles me with fear. I glue myself to one spot, almost holding my breath, wondering if I am an unwelcome visitor. Before I can consider myself trapped a light strikes the corner of my eye and I escape towards hope which suddenly dies as I hear footsteps from behind.

I can feel the adrenaline rushing through my veins. My heart is pulsating, wanting to escape out of my chest. Every drop of rain burns on my skin as I sprint, trying to find my way out of this maze. My hamstrings are screaming of agony but I continue sprinting. I am being chased by a nightmare. It can hear me gasping for breath and I can sense its eagerness of capturing me, reaching me closer and closer. I am lost in the wilderness with death just a few metres behind me. The buzzing and hissing of creepy crawlies distract me as I struggle to pass through damp shrubs and tall bushes. My sneakers are now coated a filthy brown with bits of grass stuck to the bottom, making the ground feel slick. The predator is not giving up and its roaring seems like a split distance away. Panic hits me when my ankle gets caught on a dead branch and the wet, muddy ground pulls me towards itself. My head hits the hard soil which was adorned with clusters of small rocks. The pointy edges of the rocks tears one side of my temple letting blood flow freely down my drained face. I am left hopeless as the moist earth slowly snatches away my energy. I can hear the monster clenching its jaws. I give myself no choice but to accept that I have lost. So I slowly shut my eyes in hope that this nightmare will soon be over…

A name was faintly heard. I recognized it. Low enough to confuse, but loud enough to aware. My eyes open from what seems like a deep sleep and searches for help. A jolting pain strikes my head and something wet and slippery is felt behind it. Her hand is slanting towards me in a form of sympathy. The stranger also had a number sewn on her shirt. Bordered with Blue and gold. Without hesitation, she pulls me up and places my arm around her shoulder before I overcome light-headedness. I wipe my sweaty palms on my navy blue shorts and limp towards the benches. My bottle is emptied in one gulp.
