1 AnswerLaptops & Notebooks1 decade agoWhat do I need to bring on vacation?
So, my girlfriend and I are going to Ocean City, MA in the beginning of June (we live in Cleveland) and I wanted to know what all I should bring. This will be my first actual vacation without my family (ie parents) who would normally handle bringing all the things that children would forget. So, what all should I bring? I know obviously to bring clothes, money, and food. But usually when I go on a road trip or something, I always seem to forget something rather important b/c i never thought to bring it. What are some things I should make sure we bring to ensure a good trip?
We will be driving (takes about 8 hrs) and we will be staying in a hotel suite if that matters.
2 AnswersOther - Destinations1 decade agoWays to improve guitar solo phrasing?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1fSmQaWgSw
this is a little video of a jam I just did. Was looking for tips/advice on ways to improve phrasing (solo in general). Maybe mention a part you thought was good or really really bad.
I'm not a great guitar player and have within the past month or two been trying to learn theory/scales/leads, so this isn't anything to groundbreaking. Its just Amin pentatonic and Emin Pentatonic riffs. I am aware of the popularity of these scales and overuse, but I play it the best on improv so.....plus with good phrasing, you can make 3 notes sound amazing.
i am aware of the two barres where i go out of key. ooopps. gives the solo character.
Performing Arts1 decade agoBridge of strat getting pulled up after changing strings?
i just got a new fender start the other day and i just changed the stock strings. I put on a new set of Ernie Ball 10's, same gauge as factory, and now while tuning it up the bridge is getting pulled up. Its as if your pressing on the tremolo bar. What is up with this? is it just the new string need to stretch alittle. I did stretch them already, but its raised my action up and doesn't seem right? any ideas?
3 AnswersPerforming Arts1 decade agoWhats the name of this Guirar chord?
....e O-----------
....b ------------3
....g ------------2
....d ------------3
....a O-------------
...e X--------------
....
it is a used in the intro one of my favorite songs by one of the greatest band (hint from over seas).Try and guess the song and artist.
what would you call it, though? To me I see A, F, A, D , E (E is high e open) I my Instinct tell me to say its an A Chord. but in the a major scale F# is 6th, so I couldn't flatten it to an F (thus making it a minor chord). So now I think it is a D minor chord of sorts. F# is 3rd, thus flattening will give me F and A is my 5. making this a Dminor Triad. then that high e is actually the next octave and is number 9? i think.
Is this Dmin9?
also, I didn't really plan on typing out my thinking process as it happened. but feel free to critique if need be. Thanks
3 AnswersPerforming Arts1 decade agoIs this is best way to learn all the scale modes?
So I was looking at other questions and guitarczar put:
The Dorian mode is the minor scale with a #6th (A B C D E F# G A)
The Phrygian mode is a minor scale with a b2nd (A Bb C D E F G A)
The Lydian mode is a major scale with a #4th (C D E F# G A B C)
The Mixolydian mode is a major scale with a b7th (C D E F G A Bb C)
The Locrian mode is a minor scale with a b2nd and a b5th (A Bb C D Eb F G A)
If this the best way to remember all the modes rather then trying to remember trhe patterns on the guitar.
Are the good solo/improv players thinking in their head "oh, we are in the key of "C" and I want to play in Lydian mode so I'm just gonna sharpen the 4th note of my C maj scale" ? I know they probly aren't consciously thinking it after awhile but at first? It just seems easier. Any insight?
Bonus Question: It seems much more difficult for more to play scales/solos way up towards the bridge end of the neck on the low E and A strings (ie. frets 15-24). Do most guitarist just not use these frets b/c of difficulty to fret and also timbre? should I just not worry about playing that high on the lower strings and just play the same notes on different strings?

5 AnswersPerforming Arts1 decade agoWhere are all the motorcycles from the 90's?
So, been looking to get a new (to me ) bike on Craigslist. Its seems as though I have th hardest time finding a decent bike from 1990-1999, street or sport. I'm only looking to spend around $2500 on a bike and all I ever see is newer bikes (00'-10') that are way above my price range and then a bunch of old street bikes from the 80's and even 70's. Very rarely will I find a 90's bike. Does any one know why that is or have experienced this themselves? Did they limit production during those years? is it just me?
I like how most of the 90's bikes looked too, kinda retro but still not really old and outdated.
3 AnswersMotorcycles1 decade agoWhere are the tuners on headstock less guitars?
those guitars that people thought were really cool in the 80s with no headstock. how are the strings attached past the nut and how do you tune one?
4 AnswersPerforming Arts1 decade agoWhy is the "F" hole the shape it is?

1 AnswerPerforming Arts1 decade agoHow to play maj/min chords on piano?
so we're trying to translate our knowledge of guitar to keyboards/piano and am able to figure out the notes in a progression, but how do you play a major chord and how to play a minor chord?
it is the same as guitar right? like forming triads from the major scale?
ex. to play a Cmaj, you'd play C, E, and G right? for both keys and guitar.
so to play a minor you would flatten the third and play a D# rather than E?
the minor chords just don't sound right when played on the keyboard with this logic, is this right or am I missing something?

1 AnswerPerforming Arts1 decade agoStarting Guitar Lessons, do I need anything special?
So, Finally after establishing financial independence, I now have both the time and money to afford guitar lessons. I placed and ad on Craigslist for someone to come to my apartment to teach me guitar/chord theory. I was contacted by an instructor who said he would be able to do this for me; he's charging me $20/half hour to come to my place and teach me. is that about the going rate?
also, I'm classically self taught, and have never had any formal lessons. Do I need to have anything special on hand for my instructor. He said we'd just be use'n accoustic for now, should I get a metronome for the lesson (i usually just us an online one)?
I guess any insight for instructors as to what to expect from the 1st lesson with a new student would be appreciated. Thanks.
7 AnswersPerforming Arts1 decade agoHow would you rank level of guitar player?
It seems like a lot of people on Y!A will declare themselves as an intermediate player and then go on to state they've only been playing for 1 yr or 7 months or something to that effect. I have been playing for 8 years and reluctantly will refer to myself as an intermediate player. Its not that I can't play, or haven't accumulated any guitar skills during those years, but as a "intermediate" guitar play I know that there is much much more I need to learn and be able to execute. When I play for someone who doesn't play guitar, they will usually say that I am amazing at guitar, which i know is not true. The question i guess is then, how do you judge/rank a players abilities? ( i know it doesn't really matter, as the only reason most of us play is have fun but...)
Knowledge of scales? inventory of chords? ability to play in time? ability to create original music?
4 AnswersPerforming Arts1 decade agowhere to start with music theory?
So, i play guitar, and am at the point where i need to know music theory. Where is the best place to start? learn the modes, major scales, box patterns?? the internet and books will be my teachers, so, what do you suggest i start with?
i've been playing for like 8 years, and have developed high manual dexterity in my fingers, i am fluent in playing all chords, open or barred, and changing between them. I can figure a lot of stuff out by ear and can learn songs from watching people play them on youtube pretty easily. but i just want to be a better guitar player, and theory is my answer. I know the pentatonic minor scales for some of the keys, and i know the names/location of the notes on the fret board. so i not a total newbie to theory, but I've always jsut kinda jumped around. where should i start?
3 AnswersPerforming Arts1 decade agoWhat kind of pickups for Epi Les Paul?
Just got my Epi Les Paul Standard. Looking to upgrade the pickups. Seeing if anyone had a good suggestion to help get a nice solid classic rock sound. The closer it sounds to Paige the better. I already have a bc rich mocking brd with emg 81/85's in it, so I don't really wanna make this sound the same. do you think im better off getting passive pups? any insight will be appreciated.
5 AnswersPerforming Arts1 decade agoEpiphone LP vs Gibson LP?
do you think its really worth the money for the gibson? i really would prefer not to spend that much right now but really want a LP. Are the higher end Epiphones comparable to lower end gibsons. I've played a few at guitar center, but never asked to have them bring down a nice gibson to play. Plus, i hate hate playing at guitar center, its seems like such a tool thing to do and everyone always playn really cliche stuff.
I mean you could have two epiphones for the price of one gibson, i could get and SG too. thoughts?
2 AnswersPerforming Arts1 decade agoWhat color collar job do I have?
I work at a major hospital as a radiology technologist. My uniform consists of blue 'collarless' scrubs. What would my job be classified as? Everything I read states that it a white collar if you sit at a desk, use a computer and are educated. While blue collar is if you do manual labor. This is kinda confusing me because I don't sit at a desk, but I am educated. I also do manual labor, but not really. Like my job can be very physical at times but on other occasions its not very physically demanding. Just wondering what it would be classified as, not that it really matters. thx
rude answers welcome.
