  • can employers give pregnancy information to the unemployment office?

i was laid off from my job on april 22nd (when i was about 8 months pregnant). right away i started applying for unemployment benefits. up to now, my benefits have been denied because of questions regarding my availability for work (even though i had filed every week, and had been actively searching for work, and i never said that i was not available for work). i got sent one questionnaire in the mail that i filled out but i did not include anything about my being pregnant. after i returned the questionnaire, my benefits continued to be denied. didn't communicate with the unemployment office again (other than filing my claims online) until around mid-july when i called about the status of the review for the claims i had filed. at that time, i still did not give any information regarding my pregnancy (i was actually no longer pregnant...my baby was born on june 5th). however, the lady i talked to expressed to me that they had on file that i had been pregnant when i was laid off from my job. my question is, was my previous employer allowed to give out that information? to anyone? i thought pregnancy was one of those personal/private health/medical conditions that they were not allowed to discuss w/outside parties unless i give permission to do so. and i never gave my permisison for them to share that information w/anyone outside the company. does anyone know if they were actually allowed to do this? can i do anything about this?
