  • DSL modem question, how bad is it to set a modem up?

    Ok I recently talked to my ISP about my modem getting nhot, and frequently power cycling it to get it to work.

    They said:

    1) it may be taking a crap

    2) I have to use their modem.I think that's crap

    3) I can't buy the modem, I have to rent it.I remember AT&T raking in tens of thousands from an old lady who kept the same rental phone for like 20 years.

    Now...Can I use another modem?

    How hard is it to set one up?The one I have from the ISP I didn't even need the software, it just worked.

    What modem should I have?When I power cycle the modem the icon says 100 mbit after it connects.
