  • 2008 Jetta vs. 2006 Jetta TDI?

I'm in the market for a different car, and I have it narrowed down to two Jettas at a local dealer. One of them is a 2008 SE, automatic, with 100,000 miles. It is in better cosmetic condition, and has some nice features (iPod, etc.). The other is a 2006 Jetta TDI, automatic with 120,000 miles. It has a few cosmetic defects, but also seems mechanically sound. I drove both, and I didn't really prefer one over the other. However, I'm wondering which would be the best deal in terms of reliability? Volkswagen diesels are famously trustworthy (and fuel efficient), but the other one is newer, and is closer to what I want. Which one can I count on to last the longest?

  • What are the ethics of charging students to write admissions essays?

I'm a very strong writer in a snobby high school, and I have heard a lot of concern among my peers about college admissions and essays. I thought I could charge people to write essays for them. Naturally, this would take careful planning so it's not blatantly obvious, but these dummies would get their mamas to pay anything to get into our crappy state schools for their cheer scholarships and whatnot. So, is this practice completely unethical? I know essays are meant to represent writing ability and personality, but if I pull from the applicant's voice and tell it in a more refined way than they can express, is that so wrong? Could I face legal trouble?

  • What major should I choose for a career in advertising?

I'm beginning the college application process, and I want to pursue a career in advertising. One of the schools that I really like does not have an advertising program. They have a certificate program for it, but I would still have to major in something else. What would be best? Is communication studies too broad? Journalism too specific? For perspective, I'm applying to Northwestern right now, although there are other schools where this is a problem.

  • What schools can I get into and afford?

I'll be a senior next year, and I'm weighing my postsecondary options. I'm a Texas resident, top 10% of class, 4.0 GPA, 34 ACT, 2060 SAT, and plan to major in Communications/Advertising. Wherever I go, it's important that I get lots of good scholarships. What schools should I be looking at? Right now, U Texas and NYU are favorites, and Northwestern is my reach. What kind of aid can I expect at those?

  • Is it a good idea to get a pedicure?

I'm a guy, and my friend invited me to go get a pedicure. However, I have weird ingrown toenails that got severely infected, and I just had them removed, but my toes are still infected and sore. Is it safe to have a pedicure with them being that way? Will it hurt? Also, I've never had one before, so what should I expect? Thanks!

  • U of Oregon or U of Texas?

I'm looking at some different schools, trying to decide on one best suited to me. I'll probably go into advertising or marketing. My stats are 2060 SAT, 3.9ish GPA, top 10%, lots of AP classes, good extracurriculars. I have a few reach schools, but Texas and Oregon are kinda my "safeties".

Texas is in state for me, and I could qualify for automatic admission if I maintain my class rank. If I went there, I would probably double major in advertising and marketing at McCombs. I really enjoyed my campus visit, and the in-state cost is a big plus. However, I'm looking to get out of Texas, because the weather makes me miserable, and my family lives here. So, there's that.

Oregon, obviously, is out of state. But, it's somewhere that interests me and I could get accepted to fairly easily. I'm hoping my stats will qualify me for good financial aid. I hear good things about the advertising department there, but I don't know how much of that is just... Advertising. I'm concerned about not visiting the campus and getting a feel for the overall "vibe", so I'm looking for insight on that. I'm also worried about job placement, as I know Texas has an excellent career center and placement stats.

Anywho, all the insight you have on these schools would be helpful, as well as rankings and whatnot that I haven't heard of. Thanks!

  • What are my college chances?

I'm applying to colleges soon, and I want to know what caliber of schools I can expect to get into. I have a 3.8 UW GPA, 3.9 weighted, 2060 SAT I, but I'll probably retake it to improve my score. Extracurriculars are decent, 3 years of theatre and journalism, including a state medal in a journalism contest. Two years of debate, National Honor Society. With these statistics, what kind of schools should I be holding my breath for? NYU, Carnegie Mellon, and Berkeley are some of my top "reach" choices, and U Texas is a fallback (in-state for me). Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

  • Is it possible to be taken seriously in careers without a prestigious degree?

So, I'm gearing up to apply for colleges, and I'm probably going to go into business or advertising. My concern is that I'll get into a school that's just "average", and miss out on career opportunities because my degree doesn't have an Ivy nameplate. Can I compete with a Harvard graduate for a high level job with a degree from U Oregon? Will I have the same recruiting/internship chances at San Diego State that I'd have at Stanford?

  • Trademark/Copyright Business Name and Logo?

I'm helping my father start a hotel, and we've developed a name and logo, and I need to find out what I need to do as far as trademarking and stuff to keep that name from being used by someone else, or the logo from being copied. Also, part of the logo is a modification of a graphic I found on Google Images, can I use that without contacting the creator? Any advice is much appreciated! Thanks!

  • Creating a photo submission site?

I have an idea for a website, and it would be something in the style of something like People of Wal-Mart, where users submit a picture and it goes through approval before being added to the feed. However, I'm completely new at web design and I don't know what kind of coding, etc. I need for that? I'm probably not asking the right question, but how do I go about putting that together? I have Adobe Creative Suite (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, etc.) Or is there anywhere I can find a ready made template for that? Any advice you have would be great! Thanks!

  • Am I suffering from depression?

So, I'm 16, gay, and I have this crazy tendency to hate everyone. I understand people are moody during their teenage years, so maybe it has something to do with that. But, I'm just not happy. I live in small town Texas, which doesn't help my situation, and my familial relationships are strained, because they're hardcore Baptists, and I'm, well, gay. They don't know, but I have a hard time connecting with them because of it. Also, as the only out gay in my school, I've never had a boyfriend. It's not just lack of sex that kills me, but the lack of affection. Tomorrow is my I just want someone who knows what life is like for me, and there's no one who can fill that spot. I guess I'm lonely. But, I just have this deep unhappiness, and it makes me alienate my self from people. For instance, right now, it's Friday night, all my friends are out having fun, and I'm sitting at home, watching movies on Netflix, reading Yahoo Answers. This doesn't make me happy, but neither does that. Also, I have trouble concentrating and motivating myself. Every goal I set I get out of, and I keep trying to dodge commitments. And I'm having a hard time loving myself like I used to. I lost a bunch of weight, I do well in school, I won some awards and stuff, but I'm just not happy. I'm wondering if all of this ties back in to my loneliness. I hate being "that needy girl", but can I be happy without a man? Is this depression, or hormones, and what can I do to fix it?

  • Taking a Year Off from a Career?

I'm about to start college, and I'm kinda starting to plan ahead for the future. At some point in my life, I want to live somewhere like Portland, OR and work in a coffee shop for minimum wage and live in a commune and row my own vegetables and not have to worry about things. Or maybe I could even travel the world on foot or something, I haven't worked out the specifics. Eventually, I'd like to settle down, but it's just something I want to experience and be able to tell my kids about or whatever. I'm going to school for advertising, and it would be convenient to do this like the year after I graduate college. Is this a big risk career wise? Will I miss out on internships and job offers and whatnot if I do this? Will I forget everything I learn? Has anyone done this, or know someone who has? Any advice you can give me is great. Thanks!

  • Will I get stuck where I graduate?

I'm planning on going into advertising of some sort, I live in Texas, and I want to live in the Northwest or Northeast. It would be waaaaay cheaper to go to UT Austin than a better private or OOS school. However, I'm concerned the internship and job opportunities that I get at UT will be in Austin/the rest of TX rather than somewhere I want to live, and I'll get stuck here. I want to live all over, and this horrifies me. Is this a legitimate concern? Is it like this, or am I imagining things? How can I make sure I make out of the Lone Star State?

  • What colleges can I get in?

I'm currently a junior, I'm ranked 9 in my class of 110, I haven't taken the SAT yet, but based on my PSAT I can expect between 1800 and 2000. My GPA is about 3.9 unweighted and 4.0 weighted. My extracurriculars are okay, 3 years of competitive journalism and theatre, 2 years of CX debate, National Honor Society, no sports. What kinds of schools can I expect to get into? My reach school is NYU, is that realistic? What about Northwestern? Thanks!

  • Advertising Job with Liberal Studies Degree?

I'm looking at different career paths and college choices, and I was wondering if I could get something like a 4 year degree in Liberal Studies, and then pursue a career in advertising after graduation. What other careers can one use a Liberal Studies degree in?

  • Where can I stay as a minor?

After I graduate from high school, I'll still be 17. I want to take a road trip and see the country, but I'm concerned about lodging. Most hotels require guests to be 18 or older from what I understand, so where can I stay? Is couchsurfing a reasonable idea? Can I safely sleep in my car? Any advice you have would be great! Thanks!

  • Industrial Designer Career?

Hey there, answerers! I'm in high school now and I'm investigating different college/career paths, and industrial design is on my short list. What's an average day for an industrial designer? How much do they make? What's the outlook like for this profession? Where are the best places to live? What are some good colleges? Does a designer do a lot of "hands on" building, or more designing and having others create? For some reason, I'm really interested in car and commercial plane interiors, is this the right track for me to do that? Any information you have is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • NYC Editor or California Real Estate Agent?

I'm in high school, and I'm trying to narrow down my career path and college list. Basically, I'm undecided between these two lifestyles:

For the first one, I'd go to NYU or Eugene Lang, and study communications. Ideally, I would work for a newspaper or magazine as a copy editor, and climb the corporate ladder there. Or, with the same degree, I could work in television and ideally become a producer. Money would be tighter in this path, so I'd probably live in a small studio in Manhattan or Brooklyn. Plus, NYU is majorly expensive.

For the second choice, I'd move to San Diego and go to San Diego State for a degree in real estate. I would work as a real estate agent, and save money to start flipping houses. Eventually, I'd open my own brokerage and develop properties. I'd live in a small house or apartment, and then move up to a larger house in La Jolla or Encinitas. My main concern with this plan is that this career is not very creative, and it might feel like I'm settling.

I know the choice is mine in the end, but I'm stymied. Does anyone work in these fields, or live in either place, or just have experience with difficult choices? Anything you've got is helpful. Thanks!

  • Living in New York on a Tiny Salary?

I'm in high school now, and I'm considering going to NYU or Eugene Lang for a communication degree, and then working for a magazine/newspaper as a writer. I know how to get through college with meal plans and savings and stuff, but after that I'll get an entry level job and be earning about $30k. From what I hear, rent for a studio starts over $1000 a month, and there's other expenses on top of that. I'm sure that thousands of other young professionals do this and do fine, but I'm having trouble understanding the logistics of it. Can anyone explain? Thanks!
