what would cause the engine on our family's 2006 outback to get too hot, and too cold as well?
2006 Subaru outback 2.5i (non turbo 4 cyl) If making the engine work harder at low speeds, the engine temp climbs to the upper part of the normal range, even in cold tempuratures. I have noticed the cooling fans do not come on their fast speed when this happens, however the cooling fans both work on slow and fast speeds. revving the engine will cool it down when this happens. Also, if engine braking at around 3-4k for over 20 seconds, the engine will over cool, and the tempurature will drop to the lower part of the range. I have changed the coolant myself on the car every 30k, and it still has all the original cooling parts, at 175,000 miles. When driving normally, the tempurature fluctuates very slightly, but i believe it is normal. however, try slowly climbing a hill and the temp rises, engine brake going down a mountain, it over-cools.
any thoughts would be appreciated. cooling system works perfectly fine otherwise, and the car is great. 175,000 miles.
This isnt really a major occurance, it only happens when driving the car off road, and aggressively.
2 AnswersSubaru1 decade agoIs there something wrong with the ECM on my 2005 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS?
i am very happy with my impreza, however i notice that the power seems to surge. It has the manual transmission. This happens under the rare instances that i am flooring the gas while the RPMs are lower than 2k. My impreza is NOT lugging. When i floor it, it accelerates nicely, then it will suddenly accelerate much slower. It seems to slowly accelerate for 2 seconds or so, then it will accelerate normally. (all while the gas is floored, or with 3/4 throttle or so) This is very consistant, and will occasionly happen below 3k rpms as well. sometimes, it will decrease the acceleration several times in a row. I am completely sure it is not a lugging situation.
Also, when in neutral, the rpms will sometimes fluctuate from 700-2,000 rpms while moving. it stops this when at a COMPLETE stop. Usually however, the rpms are a steady 1,200 while moving in neutral. Finally, today i started my impreza cold, and backed out of a parking space, as soon as the clutch hit the floor as i disengaged reverse, it held 2,900 rpms until i was at a dead stop. i do not believe this is considered normal. Sometimes, when driving steady speeds, or engine braking below 2k, i can turn on the defrost or the A/C, and the car will stop engine braking, and try to speed up. Does my ECM just need to be updated or something? The only modification to the engine is an aftermarket cold air intake, which does not have any leaks. Any help would be greatly appreciated
2 AnswersSubaru1 decade agoAnyone know what the estimated price range is for the new 2010' Outback?
Was looking at the new Forester, but if the Outback (redisigned) will compete with it price wise, i would buy that. That CVT looks good for gas mileage, any estimates so far?
4 AnswersSubaru1 decade agoSubaru Boxer Diesel, coming to the US? (i would buy one) comments, opinions, would you buy one? interested?

4 AnswersSubaru1 decade ago06 Outback Climate Control System problem (manually controlled one)?
in my dads 06 2.5i Outback with the manually controlled climate control, i just noticed the other day, that there was chilly air coming out of the middle right air vent (i dont know, maybe 50-60 degrees) the middle left vent was putting out very hot air, (it would burn your hand if you left it their for a minute.) The far right vent was warm, but not hot, and the vent on the left by the left mirror was putting out air the proper temputure. I had the heat turned on all the way, with the fan on low.
It doesn't make a difference what speed the fan is on, however, when i closed the far left and right vent, and placed my hand over the middle left vent, only then could i force hot air out of the middle right vent (the cold one)
I dont think it has this problem with defrost, but havn't checked. Also, the passenger footwell doesn't seem to get warm, but not entirely sure, will check later.
So far it seems mainly to be with the top 4 air vents
We live in upstate NY, so its still going to be cold here for a while, what should i do?
I do ALL of the maintenance on the car, and am good with cars, so is this something i could fix? Will this affect the A/C in the summer?
Car has been VERY reliable, and we are satisfied with it. The car has 105k, so what could the problem be?
1 AnswerSubaru1 decade ago2006 Subaru Outback Question for mechanics?
My dads 2006 Subaru Outback 2.5i has 98,000 miles. He drives a lot.
He is very happy with the car, and it is his 4th Subaru Outback
At around 87,000 miles, i noticed that there was oil leaking out of the timing belt cover. It wasnt very much. It would collect at the bottom of the cover, and then drip on the exhaust manifold. It would never drip rapidly, just slowly, about 2 or 3 drops per 100 miles driven or so. But this is something that is concerning me. At around 93,000 he had his original brakes changed, and i told him to get the timing belt changed as well, because he is lazy and would go well over the 105k mark before it was changed. When Subaru changed the belt, they said the hydraulic tensioner for the timing belt was loose, and changed it as well. After this when i changed the oil, i looked up and saw it wasn;t leaking any more. However about 2,000 miles after the new tensioner, it started slowly leaking again, and i think that it is a leak at the oil pump, as a engine gasket is unlikely at only 87,000 miles. The car now has 98,000 miles, has had the oil changed EVERY 3,000 miles religiously with mobile 1, (by me) and has had ZERO problems or concerns until now. We are very satisfied with the car and will continue to buy Subaru, but what is this problem.
3 AnswersSubaru1 decade agoWhat is a good winter tire for a 2001 Ford F-250?
Our 2001 F-250 needs new tires. I would like to buy a tire that will not wear out quickly, as the V10 in the truck is a tire destroyer, even though we drive featherfoot to save gas. Anyway, i don't want to spend over $100 per tire. The truck plows in the winter, sees pretty high payload numbers sitting in the bed, occasionally goes in tough off road conditions and gets driven on highway and on roads frequently. If you know a good, cheap, safe, and good traction tire let me know.
4 AnswersFord1 decade agoDoes anyone know the redline to a 2001 Ford 6.8 liter V10 on F-250?
Im curious what the redline is... this truck has unbelievable power. Can anyone tell me from experience or a source what the redline is, because i can't out what it is from anywhere
