15 AnswersRock and Pop1 decade agoband of the day #12 (I have a sad confession for you all)?
I will be getting back to the underground experimental music that this wildly popular series has become known for. But today, I have to reveal my unfortunate obsession with indie pop. I don't want you to worry. I've been struggling with this for a while and I don't think it's such a bad thing. We must appreciate both ends of the spectrum. And in doing so, I believe that we enhance our ability to enjoy the opposite end.
Shugo Tokumaru
I got his cd at the library, I do not remember the circumstances. I have no idea if he's popular or what people in Japan think of him. For all I know, this is their punk rock. But in America this is indie pop. I love his sickeningly cutesy voice, and the way he pronounces parachute.

10 AnswersRock and Pop1 decade agowhy is the olivia tremor control not more critically acclaimed?
possibly the only band that can amaze me with their music on a regular basis. they could do experimental and pop better than most people who try either.
MQ: give me a band from the 90s that you believe is better than the OTC
MQ2: give me a band from the 90s that you believe is worse
just to get an idea of where people might place them on a list

well this concludes my series on these types of bands which brings me to my MQ:
What do we call this genre (that would include social junk, eli keszler, tiny music and teeth collection)?
I think that if we want to follow the already established naming conventions, we could go with "post psychedelic"
but i also like calling it "tiny music"

2 AnswersRock and Pop1 decade agoband of the day #10 (Eli Keszler)?
The three best concerts I've been to are:
Akron/Family
Crystal Castles
Eli Keszler and Ashley Paul
Eli is an excellent drummer and a real tradional noisist. a noisisist. a proprietor of noise? anyway, he's not like the other modern day noisecisors. He's got a harsh sound but it's more organic. It's like a gamelan orchestra murdered some guy from Rhode Island, skinned him and wore his body suit. I doubt that though. Southeastern Asians are small, but an entire orchestra couldn't fit inside Eli Keszler.
http://www.myspace.com/elikeszler
Ashley Paul was with Eli when I saw them. I don't know if any of their myspace recordings are them together. It is hard to judge underground art music acts but I would say these guys should be the famous weirdos of our generation. They deserve it, they've got that sound. I asked the sound, "are all the other sounds being nice to you, did you make friends?" and it saxophoned back to me "no". so we went home.
1 AnswerRock and Pop1 decade agopere ubu or the contortions/james chance?
2 AnswersRock and Pop1 decade agoband of the day #9 (paul baribeau)?
he's just one person, his name's paul
i believe he is the driving force behind today's lo-fi emo movement (im stealing the word emo from those god damned high school kids)
he's one of those people who has way more demos than actual albums
http://www.myspace.com/paulbaribeau
my favorite songs are 'christmas lights', 'strawberry', 'i thought i could find you', 'boys like me'
but by far, the best is 'never get to know'
my friend likes 'ten things' but i think it's stupid
he has casiotone for the painfully alone's autobiographical lyrics
and he wishes he sounded like jeff mangum
i dont care that he's not jeff mangum, i like his music anyway
1 AnswerRock and Pop1 decade agoband of the day #8: leprechaun catering?
this is one of the most interesting experimental bands in the world so watch their video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4BeD59ZUw8
someone once said to me: "I assume you know 'Leprechaun Catering'"
but i didnt
and im fairly certain he was just being pretentious about knowing about some weird band. i deleted him from my facebook friends.
i aspire to be like these people
4 AnswersRock and Pop1 decade agoband of the day #7 (not a rock band, but one of the best jazz ensembles around)?
the pyramids
searching for the pyramids was difficult. there is an experimental group from texas with that name as well as a surf rock group from the 60s. all three bands seem pretty good but the pyramids im talking about were a free jazz group and they were great. i dont really know much about them.
