  • Recommendations for women's distance spikes?

    I'm a senior in high school and primarily run the 1600m and the 3k/3200m for track. I'm looking for a really light distance spike that will help me lower my times this season. I've heard about shoes like the Zoom Matumbos and varieties of Saucony but I wanted to see what people preferred. Does anyone have experience/recommendations for the best type of distance running spike?

    Just a note- last track season I wore a pair of Asics Hyper Rocketgirl spikes. They were a great pair of shoes but I'm sort of looking to go in a different direction from those.

  • What should I eat before my race?

    I have a track invitational tomorrow and my event- the 3000m- is one of the first to compete. I compete at 9:30. I will be waking up around 6:00 tomorrow morning and would like to get something into my stomach before I race. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to eat/ how early to eat? I've heard some good foods are bananas (which I actually really don't like, haha), oatmeal, granola or energy bars, etc.

    Anyone have suggestions?

  • Help with physics homework?

    So I have several similar physics problems for homework. Most of them sound like this:

    "Starting from rest, Mrs. Smith uniformly accelerates her car, reaching a velocity of 30 m/s after having traveled through a displacement of 75 m. What is her car's acceleration?"

    Whenever I do this, my acceleration always ends up being either half or double the correct answer. For example, in this specific problem, here is how I would work it out:

    a = v-v naught/ time

    a = 30-0/ 2.5

    a = 12 m/s^2

    The correct answer is 6 m/ s^2. However, in another problem, my answer was half of the correct answer instead of double it. Can anyone see what I am doing wrong?

    Please try to keep your answer simple; this is my second week in physics and I really have no knowledge of the subject. thanks!

  • Is there really a benefit in applying to attending an honors college?

    I've worked pretty hard these past four years in high school. I know going to an honors college would probably boost my chances of getting a job or going to graduate school. Honestly though, I just don't want four more years of studying my butt off just to make a grade. I want to enjoy my college years and I feel like going to an honors college may not allow me to do that. Can someone tell me what an honors college is like and what the true benefits of applying to one are?

  • Should I know exactly which schools I'm applying to?

    Obviously I will have to figure this out in due time (i.e., within the next few months), but at this point- I will be a senior in August- should I know exactly what schools I'm applying to? I have a solid list of schools I definitely want to apply to, but I've been finding other schools every once and a while that I want to add to my list.

    I just feeling so overwhelmed by the entire process. I really just want to be done with applications already, haha.

  • Sims 3 Generations or Nightlife?

    I'm considering buying an expansion pack for the Sims 3 and I was wondering...which do you like better? They both sound great but I can only afford one haha. Which do you prefer and why?

  • Question about teacher recommendation forms on college applications?

    I just have a pretty simple question. When a college ambiguously asks for a teacher recommendation or a counselor recommendation, are they asking for me to submit the official teacher evaluation or counselor evaluation off of the Common Application website? For example, the Boston College application asks for:

    "7. Two Teacher Recommendations

    8. Counselor Recommendation"

    ...so are they asking me for the teacher evaluation form on this site (https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/DownloadForms.... or JUST a letter of recommendation? Thanks for any help!

  • Help with a specific heat problem?

    I'm really bad at calorimetry so could someone please help me with this problem and try to put it in the simplest terms possible?

    A 5g sample of aluminum pellets (specific heat capacity .89J/gxC) and a 10g sample of iron pellets (specific heat capacity .45J/gxc) are heated to 100 degrees C. The mixture of hot iron and aluminum (I'm guessing the metals have been fused together at this point, though my teacher makes no mention of this in the problem) is then dropped into 97.3 g water at 22 degrees C. Calculate the final temperature of the metal and water mixture assuming no heat is lost to the surroundings.

    Normally I can do these problems but usually there is only one metal involved and therefore only one specific heat I have to work with. I don't know how to take into account the specific heats of both metals. Thanks for any help!

  • Would it be odd to double major in accounting and sociology?

    I am a junior in high school and am considering possible colleges and majors. I really want to major in sociology and accounting, but neither by itself. I'm looking at a variety of schools, my top ones which include: Penn State, Boston U, Georgetown, George Washington, Syracuse, and Yale (the last one is a long shot :P). Anyway, I was just wondering if this combination would be likely to be rejected by these colleges and ones that are similar- does it seem too odd to work? Should I major/minor in accounting and soc, respectively? I really don't want to do that because my plan was going to be to become a CPA and then, once I had a stable job, go back and get my masters in sociology so I could go into sociological research. Does anyone have any thoughts?

  • Is H20 an example of a molecular formula or a formula unit? Explanation?

    In our textbook, it is says a molecular formula is a chemical formula for a molecular compound- which is usually made up of two NONmetals. It also says a formula unit is a chemical formula for an ionic compound.

    We have to decide whether H20 is a molecular formula or a formula unit. I thought it was a formula unit, since H is a metal and the charges balance out (therefore creating an ionic compound). But my answer key says H20 is a molecular formula.

    Can someone please tell me which one it is and, most importantly, why it is that one? Please go easy on me, I'm in high school chemistry and have a very limited knowledge of this stuff. Thanks!

  • Help with implicit differentiation?

    I don't actually need help with finding the derivative, but with what follows. My directions told me to find points on a curve where x^2 + xy + y^2 = y where the tangent is parallel to the x-axis.

    The first step I took was finding the derivative of the above equation; my result was dy/dx = (-2x - y)/ (x + 2y).

    The next step I took was setting the derivative equal to zero, where I got up to this point:

    0 = -2x - y

    My question is, where do I go from here? How do I find the point on the curve where the tangent is parallel to the x-axis, given only variables? I feel like the answer will end up being really easy but this stuff is kind of abstract for me so any help would be great! thanks!

  • 12-year old brown lab is vomiting frequently?

    Our dog, a 12-year-old brown lab, has been sick since last night. He started vomiting at around 1 in the morning and stopped around 5. In those 4 hours he threw up about 7 or 8 times. His stomach seemed to calm down around then so we gave him a little bit of breakfast and he drank some water, but he threw up again about 5 minutes ago. He seems fine otherwise, maybe just a little tired.

    We're not sure why he's doing this; we have a few ideas. On Saturday night, he counter surfed while we weren't home and ate a bag of sourdough bread (bag included). Also, last night we took him for a walk and I noticed he would eat more grass or leaves than usual.

    We don't know exactly why he's doing this though. Does anyone know:

    -why he might be throwing up? (the bread is probably the most likely answer but we're still not sure)

    -if this is something we should take him to the vet for?

    -what we can do in the meantime to help him stop throwing up?

    Just so everyone knows, we probably won't be feeding him much (or anything) tonight, as a precaution. We will let him drink water, unless anyone thinks this is a bad idea. Thanks for your help!

  • Problems with the Nikon Coolpix L110?

    I recieved a Nikon Coolpix L110 for my birthday in March, and up until now, it has been working flawlessly. However, today I was taking a video and noticed a black edge in the upper right hand corner of my screen. I can't tell if it's from damage to the screen or damage to the lense, but when I take a picture, the black edge is there. I tried cleaning the lense off, to no avail. Has anyone else had this problem and, if so, what did you do about it?

    Thanks for any help you can give!

  • Do I need a physical to get my driver's permit?

    I live in PA and I printed out the forms to get my driver's permit. There's a section on it that calls for some things for a medical examiner to fill out- kind of like a physical. However, I had a physical back in February so I'm wondering if I really need to go back to the doctor just to get her to check off a few questions on the forms. I don't know who else would do it though. Does anyone know if I need a physical to get my permit?

  • Why won't my Sims 3 launcher open?

    I installed the Sims 3 on my computer just after Christmas, and it has been working flawlessly until today. I tried to open the game up through the Sims 3 launcher but a message came up saying something like "The Sims 3 launcher has failed" or some message like that. I tried to switch it to "Run as administrater" but that didn't help.

    I don't interact at all with uploads/ downloads on the launcher, I just want to play the game. Can anyone help me? It would also be great if I didn't have to uninstall and reinstall, if at all possible.

  • In art, can cigarettes be a sign of wealth?

    I have this project and we're supposed to analyze art. One of the things we're doing is looking for symbols in the art. I am analyzing three photographs, one of which is located here:

    http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/images/h2/h2_1987.11...

    I'm having trouble coming up with symbols, or the purposes of objects, in this picture. It was taken in 1926 in Germany; I thought that the cigarette he is holding might be a sign of wealth, but my mom wasn't sure. Can anyone clarify whether the cigarette is used as a symbol of wealth or not?

  • Would I be able to write a research paper on "The Sun Also Rises"?

    I'm in tenth grade, and we have to pick a book for a research paper. I saw a lot of books that caught my interest but I couldn't tell if I would be able to develop a solid thesis from any. Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises" seems like a good book but I didn't know how hard it would be to write on. Do you think it's okay to write on, or should I choose a different book? Do you have any suggestions?

  • What book would be good to read for a tenth grade research paper?

    My teacher asked us to pick a book for our upcoming research paper, though it's a pretty long way off, but I wanted to start thinking about it ahead of time. I was considering reading Fifth Business by Robertson Davies, but I didn't know if that would have enough subject matter for me to produce a thesis. What would you recommend?

    If you see anything on this list, I had some interest in these books:
