After going in to the ER with a minor laceration to a finger, the ER doc spent about 2 minutes looking at my chart and then told me that she would need to order blood work & x-rays. Knowing a bit about medicine, I knew that these tests were unnecessary. I told her that I wanted an opinion as to whether stitches were required. She refused to treat me or offer an opinion unless I had the labwork, at which point I said no thank you and left the ER. While I paid the subsequent bill from the hospital, the doctor's office sent me a bill for "treatment," to the tune of nearly $100. Can a doctor's office charge you if they refuse to treat you? What exactly am I paying for here, the 2 minutes that the lady spent with my chart?
