  • purpose of haviland piece with hole in bottom?

My mom been trying to figure out the purpose of a piece of Haviland she inherited from her grandmother. It has two handles (shaped half-a-heart), is round, stands approx 4" tall, opening is approx 3.5", and (here's the curious part) there's a hole in the bottom that measures approx 0.8" across. It also has a lid that has four gentle lobes and a squared-off knob in the center.

Someone thought it was used to put a canned item in (like a cream) and the hole allows for coolness to raise from ice placed on a dish underneath.

Another thought is that it is for a canned item, but the hole is used to help push the can upward to get it out of the dish without having to tip the can to slide it out.

    Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Biomed Engineering topic for elementary classroom?

Group of elementary students seeking suggestions for a Biomedical Engineering topic. We are looking to discover an innovative way to repair injuries or overcome illnesses and disabilities. Given that these are students ages 9-12, it would be wonderful if the topic was interesting to them, has a strong humanitarian aspect, is narrow in focus, and lends itself to visual display. We're trying to pinpoint a problem and come up with a solution. Ideally, it would be a solution that is solved by a collaboration of engineering and medicine/science.

We discussed a simple topic in class that already exists; it was Adding flavors to liquid medicine to make it more palatable to children and therefore make the taking of medicine a more pleasant experience, and helping the patient overcome an illness.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

    Here's the context:

We hope everyone has noticed our brand new basketball hoops at the playground. They are very nice and vandal-proof. I was told I could hang a V8 on those hoops!

  • Proj Lead Way schools in Austin or San Antonio areas?

Would appreciate recommendations for public high schools in the Austin or San Antonio areas that offer the pre-engineering program called Project Lead The Way (already certified) and have an active FRC Robotics team. We have a soon-to-be 9th grader who is asking for this combo.

    Thanks!
