In quality control negotiations between a large supermarket chain and a straw-
berry producer, it is provisionally agreed that samples of 100 strawberries
will be picked at random from delivered consignments and if more that two
have developed mould, the entire delivery will be rejected. The producer
knows, from past experience, that about 1% of a consignment will be mouldy
but wants to know the probability of such an consignment being rejected.
Determine that probability. [3]
(c) Determine also the supermarket’s risk of accepting a consignment with 5%
defective strawberries. [3]
Hint: use the Poisson approximation to the Binomial distribution.

B2. (a) State the mean of a continuous exponential distribution whose probability
density function is f(t) = je^−jt, t > 0. [2]
(b) The shelf life (time to detectable spoilage) of a certain type of cartons of blue-
berries has been found, from past experience, to be exponentially distributed
with a mean of 10 days. Calculate the probability of a carton spoiling
(i) during the tenth day
(i.e. in the 24 hours after the midnight of the ninth day); [4]
(ii) some time after the end of the fourteenth day; [2]
(iii) within the first five days of display
(i.e. up to the end of the fifth day). [2]
Hint: take j = 1/X, where X is an appropriate random variable.
