5 AnswersYahoo Answers1 decade agoWhy won't my laptop detect a wireless network anymore?
I woke up this morning and can no longer access my home wireless network with my laptop. The wireless network is working fine. I have a sony vaio and it has a wireless switch to activate/deactivate the wireless connection. This switch now does nothing, regardless of position. The green light does light up to show the connection is active for a few seconds after rebooting, but then switches off and cannot be reactivated.
I have not installed any software to my knowledge that should affect this. When I use windows to try to diagnose the problem, it just tells me that I need to flick the switch, which does not work. Are there any keyboard shortcuts that I might have accidentally pressed to switch it off?
I am using Vista, which until now has been entirely trouble free.

3 AnswersPhysics1 decade agolaptop virus (trojan)?
My friend has managed to install a trojan on his laptop, and has asked me to help. I have installed Sophos antivirus and firewall (free from our university) and run all necessary scans. Sophos detects and quarantines what appears to be the virus, but unfortunately the problem remains. He is completely unable to access the internet (not sure why, I thought most trojans wanted you to get online so they could steal your passwords etc). I have tried other virus scanners, although admittedly they were free ones with the same result - the virus files are detected but continue to operate. Any ideas/suggestions? Also, he has a desktop computer - is it safe to transfer his documents from the laptop to the desktop if scanned for viruses first?
15 AnswersSecurity1 decade agoHave I lost my data (pen drive problem)?
I just put my memory stick/pen drive into an old computer and a warning appeared on the screen (windows) that said something like 'a power surge has occurred on this USB port and device cannot be recognised'. Now the memory stick isn't recognised on any computer. Does this mean the data is lost too? Are there any freeware data recovery programs that might help? There was a lot of university work on there and I'm not sure how much of it was backed up....

If we can make a simulation of our own, of sufficient complexity that it is a drain on our 'parent' universe's processing speed, might we be able to detect this time-shift?
11 AnswersAstronomy & Space1 decade agotell me why my perpetual motion device won't work?
Ok, I know that it breaks the law of conservation of energy but....Imagine a sealed box, with a wheel similar to a water wheel but at the end of the spokes is a sealed capsule of gas at a certain density. The wheel is fixed in the centre of the box and can spin on its axle. Also the box is split vertically down the middle by some sort of sophisticated membrane, which is keeping a dense liquid on one side and a light gas on the other side, apart. The wheel is therefore split vertically in half, one half in the dense liquid and the other in the light gas. Now, the gas in the capsules at the end of the wheels spokes is lighter than the liquid and heavier than the light gas, creating upward motion when the capsules enter the liquid at the bottom, and downward motion when entering the gas at the top. Aside from the technical challenges of creating a membrane that would keep the liquid and gas apart, while also allowing the wheel to move freely between both, why wouldn't it work indefintely?
