Budgeting! Please Help!!?
Just a little background: I am 20 years old, I just finished school, and I landed my first job, making just under $52,000/yr. It is a good job at a large hospital in Downtown Boston. I have no loans, or credit bills and still live at home, and I am planning to stay at home for at least another year. (I have good parents who won't charge me rent or anything.) The only thing I need to worry about is personal expenses, car insurance, and gas. Anyways, I have actually been working at the hospital part time in another role, and have always saved 20% of my pay, and I'd like to continue that. A lot of what I saved I invested, or put in my retirement account, but I have $3,000 available to buy a car (I need a new/slightly used, more reliable one.) I did the math, and after taxes, saving, bills, and a very generous amount for personal expenses I am left with $300/wk. So anyways, what is a good amount to spend on a car? I know I can get away with spending about $10,000 and get something that will last a long time, but I have never had a nice car before, so it really is something I want to put a bit of money in... Also, looking forward a few years, how much would you spend on housing every month? (Lets say we cut down the savings to just 5%) Please don't post on here saying something like "cutting your savings contribution is a bad idea!" I have been saving for years, and have sacrificed a lot to graduate debt free! (Not like my friends who will graduate with thousands in loans...) So I am very proud- Only while answers, please! PS- Sorry if I rambled on a bit too much, just wanted to give a good background!
3 AnswersPersonal Finance8 years agoMass Lottery - Sizzlin 7's?
On this ticket, if one of the numbers is red, does that make it a "sizzlin" symbol? Or would it actually say "sizzlin" when I scratch it off? I got a red #9, and the code on the ticket says "FHR." sorry I never buy scratch tix, so I'm a little confused :)
Here is the ticket: http://www.masslottery.com/games/instant/5-dollar/...

2 AnswersGambling9 years agoCollege Essay, title ideas?
I am done with my college essay, it is about how a severe concussion during the seasons first football practice made me realize what I wanted to do in life, (be in the medical field) because of numerous doctor and physical therapy visits. I want the title to be along the lines of: figuring out what I wanted to do, because one day it "hit me" literally. Any ideas?

Anyone familiar with this major? I really want to go into nursing, but would like to get a feel for healthcare before I make the commitment. If anyone has done this, was it a helpful thing to do? How was the courseload? Did it prepare you well for after you graduated? Thank you :)
1 AnswerHigher Education (University +)10 years agoCollege- listen to my parents or go my own way?
I have an in person interview at a college next week, and I talked to my admission counselor earlier this week, for kind of a pre-interview interview, which went very well. After talking with my guidance counselor, I've taken her advise and decided this is the school that I want to go to, and getting in is no problem, seeing as I meet and exceed their requirements. There is a good chance the college will offer me admission on the day I visit, and I would love to accept it, but there's one problem. My parents are not supportive of this, they would rather see me take a year off, and get a certification in something related to the medical field, like phlebotomy (8 week course), to get my foot in the door, and after that year, get my RN degree at a local hospital-college. They say between that, and my dad working at a major Boston hospital by the time I am a certified RN, I will have no problem getting a job. Although my parents plan makes more sense financially, I just see myself at this college, and I am absolutly in love with it. So my question is, am I wrong here, because you are only young and in college once, or are my parents right? What would you do?
I want to become a nurse.
My college= $20,000/yr
Parents college= $8,000/yr
Plebotomists make about $15/hr
2 AnswersHigher Education (University +)10 years agoCollege essay- opinions/suggestions?
With so many options on what to do in life, it was always just easier to avoid thinking about the grueling task of narrowing down what I wanted to do as a career, never mind choosing a school that is a good fit for me. So, I just went through most of high school just living day by day, with the mentality that I have plenty of time to figure it out eventually. With each passing year, term, and even day, I became more and more nervous about my pending decision, until all of a sudden one day it hit me, literally, a severe hit to the head on the first day of football practice would guide me to realizing what I want to do with the rest of my life.
It was every athlete’s worst nightmare, a concussion. I sat there, in my hospital bed, memorized by everything going on around me. I was in severe pain, and my head felt like a balloon, but I was completely engulfed in what the variety of healthcare workers were doing, and how efficient and knowledgeable they all seemed to be. At that moment, something changed inside of me, I knew I wanted to be in a hospital for the rest of my working life, the only problem was, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to be doing.
A bad prognosis left me with several more doctors’ appointments, and a few physical therapy sessions. During each of my visits, I always met people with different job titles. I always asked them what exactly they do, and where they went to school, I was amazed at all they knew, and I yearned to be in their shoes, working in a career doing something meaningful and worthwhile.
My journey to my dream job is still being written, I am still going to doctors visits regularly, even a month after the injury. It has been a long and hard recovery process, and I am still far off from being completely healed. The injury may have even ended my high school football career, but I am not focusing on the negative. Although the concussion has complicated my life in the short-term, it has made my life in the long-term crystal clear, and it all started on that faithful day with my first hospital visit.
