I asked a girl with a boyfriend to prom?
we were friends--not too close and not too far--perfect for a prom asking. i talked with one of her good friends about my chances, whether she's single, etc. before and her friend told me to go for it. the girl spends a lot of time around another guy, but her good friend assured me they were just really close friends and nothing more. she seemed really optimistic about success. i ask the girl and she says yes. her good friend, the same one, just told me she has a boyfriend and nobody knew about it. i feel really bad. should i apologize? is it my fault? what should i do?
2 AnswersSingles & Dating8 years agoPressure of a sphere on a table?
A perfect wooden sphere lies on a metal table. They intersect at a point, which is 0-dimensional, and therefore has 0 area. Pressure=Force/Area. Force is clearly mass x gravity. Area is 0. What is the sphere's pressure on the table? Infinity? Then why wouldn't the sphere break the table?

1 AnswerMathematics8 years agoCan square roots generate random numbers?
Mr. Ralph needs to randomly choose one of ten students. Dmitri proposes this method:
1. Assign each student a digit
2. Randomly choose a number, N, which is not a perfect square, between 1 and 1000
3. Select the 10th digit right of the decimal place of sqrt(N)
4. The student with the corresponding digit wins
Is this method random? If not, what digit should Dmitri choose to have the highest probability of winning?
2 AnswersMathematics9 years agoDiabolical probability: Doctor/sickness?
Dr. Colinsworth correctly diagnoses a patient's condition--healthy or ill--10% of the time. Each time he is correct, his percentage of correct diagnoses increases by 1%. 80 patients line up for treatment. The 80th patient is ill; what are the odds that the doctor agrees?
I don't know the answer; please help me make progress.
2 AnswersMathematics9 years agoTaking the last sushi?
at a party of 20 people, the host orders 100 sushi, so 5 for each person. I take 2 at the beginning of the party, and midway through, there are 3 left. can I take the rest, since I haven't had my share? however, a few greedy people have taken more than 5, so some people have had less than their share. but I deserve 3 more...
5 AnswersEtiquette9 years agoWin infinitely from a slot machine?
a certain slot machine either doubles the money you put in or takes it all. you win 1/3 of the time. assume you have an infinite amount of money. here is a technique to becoming rich:
bet $1
if you lose, bet 2^n next time, where n=1, 2, 3... (so bet $2, then $4, and so on)
if you win at any point, stop and you'll be up $1
repeat forever
how is this possible?

2 AnswersMathematics9 years agoFour of a kind probability?
so the probability is 13C1 x 12C1 x 4C1
(choose a card value, then there are 48 cards left over for that last slot)
but...
isn't this assuming that the four of a kind appears in the first four cards, and the random is in the last slot?
why don't we have to account for the fact that KKKK9 is the same as KK9KK?

this is completely serious, so trolls get out.
when i ejaculate, my left testicle grows smaller while my right one just hangs there. it feels like all the semen from the left is sucked up. it doesn't hurt, but its a weird sensation. should i be concerned?

1 AnswerMen's Health9 years agoI'm too bulky for running?
i'm a mid distance runner and recently, my lower part of my leg (calves?) has gotten really big. i'm not trying to brag, but i think this is muscle from all my workouts. however, the bulkiness kind of slows me down–i can't glide around the track like other runners. i feel super heavy, is this normal?

2 AnswersRunning9 years agoNew track event: please give opinion?
how does this sound: an interval race
8 competitors each running 4x400, 2 minutes rest in between (number of intervals, distance, and rest period can be changed)
if a runner comes in 4th, 3rd, 1st, and 8th, his score is 4+3+1+8=16 points. lowest score wins.
i think this could be very tactical and exciting. what do you think?
thanks everybody
3 AnswersRunning10 years agoIs too much protein bad?
I drink two full cups of milk, lots of meat, and usually one of the following: eggs, fish, or beans, per day. I also take a multi-vitamin. This seems like an adequate amount of protein. My mom believes that protein makes you a superhero or something and she's wants me to drink a muscle milk drink and eat a protein bar daily too. Is this too much? I don't like the muscle milk; isn't this going overboard?
5 AnswersDiet & Fitness10 years agoLogic/probability question–please read!?
100 unknown numbers are written on 100 slips of paper and randomly sent down a conveyor belt. Tommy can only read one at a time, and can only choose one slip to exit the room with. If he doesn't choose a slip when it passes, it is gone forever. Sarah is playing the same game with the same numbers in another room. When they compare numbers, the person with the highest one wins. What should be tommy's strategy?
